It is a good complement to the flute's standard headjoint. You get an alternative expression that suits different types of music. I use the same breathing technique as an opera singer, and press the air with varying degrees of pressure, from very soft to harder blows.
So interesting! I injured my shoulders a few years ago and was concerned I would not be able play while they were healing. I’m thankful that I could but glad to know there is something available if anything like that happens again. 😅
Hey Gina I appreciate you doing a review on the flip head I just recently got one and I don't know if there is like a different fingering other than the standard one for the second octave d mine sounds a little wonky is that something that's normal just want to know if anyone else is having trouble with that particular note
Thank you very much for the review. Am I right that the sound with fliphead is always more airy than the normal sound of a flute? How much differs the sound of an Irish low whistle?
great video! I just got my fliphead, but can't make any vibrato with it. Was wondering if you could give a quick explanation of the technique? thank you!
In playing the flute the conventional way, don't you have to tighten your embouchure to get into a higher register? You seem to get a complete range using this type of head joint but there doesn't seem to be the equivalent of tightening your embouchure. How do you do it?
On the flute’s standard head joint it’s not just embouchure that changes the register - it’s a combination of embouchure size and air speed. With the flip head, you change registers by increasing airspeed, just like you would with a recorder or Irish/Scottish whistle. So of course you don’t have the same flexibility of tone and dynamics as you would with a traditional flute head joint
I’m wondering: are you somehow affiliated with the fliphead company? There are a couple of reviews of the fliphead on youtube but none of them mention any critiques of the product. Seems a bit strange. Surely there must be some negatives?
thanks Gina!!! I want one, I'm a professional music teacher and saxophonist USAF Bands retired.
Excellent video!!!!!

Watch recorders tutorial for this
I play the Native American flute…so this may sound similar.
I have never heard of the flip head joint before. It's interesting that it makes it sound more like a recorder.
It fits on a Muramatsu flute?

Kinda sounds like a mix between a concert flute and recorder...interesting!
I believe this fliphead is for doublers.any sax player can easily play flute with the fliphead .i will buy one but it is over priced
Would love to know how you're getting up into the higher register with this. I have not been able to do that yet.
Isn't it done by using (a lot) more breath?
I'm wondering how this thing affects intonation. The tuning sounds slightly off.
does it takes that much air ? looks like you are a bit out of breath ?
Would love to book a private lesson if you do that!
