"La Vie en Rose" is a terrific movie and this is one of several terrific scenes. Sure, it's somewhat typical in music biopics where the protagonist pulls out one last tune that saves the day and launches a stellar career but one can really feel the moment of crises here, the father doing all he can do which isn't enough, the girl's (young Edith) embarrassment at his failing and then being desperately pushed into the grown-up world to survive.

What an amazing voice and performance by this young girl. The Marseillaise is such a great National Anthem. I’ve been fortunate to have been to France, twice. The Marseillaise will always make me think of the French Resistance and those who fought bravely during WWII, against tyranny and evil. It takes my mind right back to an Elementary School near the funicular that goes up to Sacre Coeur - above the huge front door, carved in the stone, is “Liberte - Egalite - Fraternite” and then at the side of the door is a large, brass plaque, describing how many Jewish children and teachers were removed from the School, and shipped to the death camps. It’s a heartbreaking reminder, amid the beauty of one of the World’s great cities.
