    Don't keep sub par employees around because you feel bad to fire them... Pay bills on time to eliminate extra fees..... Negotiate EVERYTHING, don't accept ANY of your initial business quotes. I paid $115.00 a month for trash my first year in business, then re-negotiated and paid $80 a month my 2nd & 3 rd...

    Hi, Thank you for sharing. I'm failing right now and your video is being very helpful. I'm trying to do more great products, but as you say, if there's no one to buy it, is useless. I will focus in my marketing.
    Your video has more than 3 years and it is still helping, thanks again.

      Hey Marto! Good luck man it's a difficult situation to be in and we'd all love to just make great products and have customers just walk in the door and love what we do. Get marketing, get those people in the door and improve the products as you go. Being a great bar is easy if people already know that you're good, you just improve a couple of things. Trying to be a great bar when people don't know you is a very hard thing.
      There's a good book called "More Bums on Seats" by Howard Tinker, it's for restaurants but the ideas still work for bars. Try it out!

    I want to start my own bar. I have great ideas, and I'm very passionate about beer. Craft beer. Not so much that fru fru stuff like cocktails :p. I like wine tho too 🤔🤔. I'm willing to take a financial risk doing something I love. Don't beat yourself up about it. Pull a wolf of Wall Street, get investors pooled back in, and then reform-rebuild! I believe in you!

    Give this guy props for coming out and saying what it is. Wish you the best of luck for the future. Points to ad...do not sign personal guarantee on rent, make sure you negotiate rent terms with the landlord and also possible rent free period, general rule of thumb for the industry is revenue = rentX10 if you rent is 1000 you should be trying to make 10000 because with all the expenses thats one rule of thumb to follow if you want to make money, less is more....do not put 100 cocktails on the list and 25 food items, start really small and then expand as you get better at managing and controlling the costs and the wastage (you will waste alot of food/booze), give away free stuff but do not give away the expensive stuff....sounds like a no brainier but so many times we want to keep people happy and shout them a free one....do not do it with Zacapa XO lolol anyways my journey into bar land is going to start very soon...anyone in sydney want to talk compare notes? hit me up.

      Hey thank you. Been a hard winter. Night club is great and only one night. But other 3days dead. So it is like waiting on one day.

    • @TheBoozeBaron
      @TheBoozeBaron  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** That's never a great place to be in relying on one major day of trade but when there's not enough customers to make the other nights worthwhile it's not like opening the doors more often does anything other than cost you yeah?
      One thing that has worked for previous clients and friends in hospitality was offering the space as a meeting space, teaching cocktail classes, teaching hospitality training courses or alcohol tastings (like a whisky tasting) on off nights or during the day times. It doesn't take much to turn a nightclub into a space that can run business council meetings or teach tequila appreciation.
      Talk to your suppliers, training colleges or local business chambers and networking groups like BNI and see if there's interest in using the space. It'll put an extra couple of hundred in your pocket for almost no effort on your part just make sure you charge for it, plus you'll get more people into the venue and possibly returning on your actual trading nights.
      Give it a shot, worst that can happen is no one is interested in using the space in that way.

    • @jonsamia3437
      @jonsamia3437 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've worked in hospo since I was 14 (26 now), obviously I am passionate about it; it was great for living abroad and working in during University. It has great challenges - the long hours, customer facing skills and interpersonal skills, training staff and team work motivation. There is always something new you can learn. Everyone brings some new unique aspect to a business - whether it is their calm ability to work in a rush, being polite, or even the willingness to do a deep clean regularly. There should always be ways to bring in new customers and KEEP regulars coming back for what you do. You have to enjoy the venue, do the work and respect your staff and your product. You were right on the money with CONSISTENCY! Also, don't just let any one make the coffee or the drinks, they have to be experienced and professional. It's a business, not a charity.

    • @TheBoozeBaron
      @TheBoozeBaron  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The best way to get in front of people like me is to find social media groups like the Global Bartender Exchange or similar hospitality forums. Become a member and provide value around issues in the industry for at least a few months and just pay attention to what they all talk about and the problems they are facing as workers and venue owners/managers. Then you can suggest your services in response to relevant posts and I guarantee you'll have a good success rate.

    Can't wait till your next venture... I hope it is booze related ;-)

  • @rustykelly2004
    @rustykelly2004 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm drawing up a business plan for another bar as we speak and I am trying to get some inspiration as to ideas etc. The one thing I would say is well done on being as honest with yourself. It took you a long road to get to that point but you have taken away some development areas and some lessons that you can apply going forwards ..... stay positive.
    That said you basically nailed it when it comes down to spending your money on marketing rather than ploughing it all into product. That said a good way to do both at the same time and without spending money is to use what is around you. Is there a University nearby or a college, is there a student there who is looking at web or app design as part of their project? Get them to build you a bar app to mutual benefit. They get the project done and also are able to add you to there CV or Resumé. You get a free developer and you are engaging the local community. You now have an app for your bar which is a bar rather than restaurant ... so why not link up with a restaurant and offer a discount to there restaurant on the app? (They are baaically getting customer referrals from you) Now you are networking with a non-direct competitor and they can now refer you business! It is also a reason people may downlaod your app to get that discount but it's now another way you can find new customers as they need your app to get the discount.
    You have a football game nearby, play on your cocktail themes. Instead of going nuts with new cocktails get some old school cocktails and theme them to the football team and for god sake put a sign outside advertising that.
    All in there is a couple of ideas but play along those lines and you should find success. Good luck man!

    My advice as an ex (successful) bar owner is go to your chosen resort out of season, their will be dozens of bars for sale, don’t rush or believe a single word the sales people tell you about the amount of custom, we have seen the same bar sold three times in one year and if in doubt do nowt.

    Very brave of you to do go on and do this. It's a hard business. that is for sure. The only negative I would ad is that you kept saying how it was not good enough to be great at XXX and great at XXX, but when we fail we are not great. You may have thought you did a few things great and maybe you did, but in a business, it is all or nothing. Good luck to you on future endeavors.

  • @Dylan28969
    @Dylan28969 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, if you start another bar taking all of this information on board, remember that other bars aren't a competition for you. They are your greatest advertisers, allies, and knowledge base to your bar. If you are friends with other bars, then when their customers ask for recommendations on where to go next, your name will come up. Word of mouth is the most influential form of advertising and its free. You can schedule events with them that link your bars. You can offer masterclasses to their staff if you have extensive knowledge. They can help staff your bar if you run into issues on a certain night. Most importantly, if you don't know something, more than likely they do and you can work it out together. The goal of working with another bar is to grow the market of customers together so that you're both successful rather than fighting each other for a smaller market. You make the market you work in more potentially profitable than it was originally by working together.

    First of all thank you for sharing your insights, it helps. I do not like to give advice , But will still do cause i think you are my kind of guy. " Not worry too much". Success and money does not define what you are worth. Its what you can do and are capable of doing( Not past but futuristic). I think selling your bar was a good thing as now have the opportunity to do everything all over again and this time i am sure you'll have increased your chances of success . probability is defined as numerator out of denominator 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 5 . so as long as you decide i will not give up till i have done the same thing five time and you actually do it. Success is guaranteed.( sum up: "Try Try until you do not succeed". " Never Surrender").
    I see you as a very passionate person. I am too. It is mostly positive. But negative side of passion is that it makes you assume things and not validate ( Risk Analysis) , What if this goes wrong, What if others do not share my passion. What if others do appreciate my passion but do not pay up. Best profession for passionate people is to be an artist.you should imagine your self as a musician in a subway station and study how many people will actually pay for music.the one that is made with real passion, emotions and to make them feel happy.
    A pragmatic point that people like us needs to think about in business. its first about moving money from other peoples pocket to your pocket without getting sued.everything else comes second.

    This was an interesting video. Have been experimenting with many of the same problems myself this past year. I think - it looks like I`ll be able to make it, but it has been outrageoulsy tough going.
    I started with no prior knowledge, knew no one, and had no money - I did it because this looked like the best and only opportunity to get something going and I knew that doing nothing would not help, so I just started #komstevje
    .
    Result - so far - Ive been living sixteen months without electricity, biking 16 kms more or less every day, and my house is on foreclosure - yet I can not quit, I don`t feel like quitting - as the first year comes to a close I understand I have learned a tremendous lot, and am able to see that the numbers are not totally red, More effort should be given on advertising, absolutely, and as you remind me, I should now after finishing writing this, set myself down with the crayons and make some sign to put on the outside wall.
    Great content! Thanks!
