    One of the most straightforward how-to's I've ever seen.

      i was wondering if my metal blade would just cut the whole thing... but that's a LOT of silica dust, if it did. might just try that, instead of having to buy a glass cutter that i'd probably lose before i needed it again. maybe a torch to just heat the scored part.

    I’ve been using the same bottle neck slide for 35 years. I’ve dropped it at least 5 times! Anyway... I just scored the bottle well and gave it a good knock on a wood railroad tie and it severed right off. Then scuff the cut end with fine emery cloth.

  • @MarkSiosal
    @MarkSiosal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Actually using just a flame round the score then into iced water gives better percentage of success. Those little butane blowtorches are perfect, ot even just a lighter (might take a while mind you) The more you concentrate the heat in one area, the better, rather than heating alot of the bottle up in water.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes you can see exactly where the weak points in the glass are before you score. The higher quality bottles are way more consistent.

    It might have been better to show how to score the bottle with a regular glass cutter since most people don't have that special tool and probably don't want to buy one if they are just making a couple slides. Also, are you aware of the string method?

    Man thanks for this. But dude I have just waisted 3 very nice bottles, they were like perfect lol. They all cracked like sideways and up the neck. Not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong. Maybe overscore? I don't know.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Could be over score. Some bottles look nice but already have weak points in the glass which causes them to split... it's kind of luck of the draw to some degree. I might also suggest that you make sure the bottle gets EXTRA hot before icing it. I've notice a correlation between longer heat times and cleaner breaks.

      Stanman121 of course the more bottles of wine you have to drink to get it right will just make the process that much harder. I'd stop once you start seeing more than one bottle!

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, congrats, feels good to shred with a homemade slide. Little tip, you can score the bottleneck twice and remove the lip of the bottle. Once you've rounded out both edges, it makes for a really sweet and easy to maneuver slide.

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @83madrague
      @83madrague 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      swiftlessons do you think the bottleneck will sound better if i use a great vintage wine like a "BORDEAUX" for example .....

    • @swiftlessons
      @swiftlessons  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      actually, I've been finding success with cheaper bottles... I recently raided a liquor stores recycling bin after a wine tasting, and got about 50 bottles. The trouble wasn't finding ones that sound good, rather ones with the right size holes and a wall that was at even thickness all the way around. Please keep track of the bottles you cut, that way we can figure out which have the best tone, and fit the best.

    If you go over a score a second time you will ruing the cutter blade. Just once around

  • @lolobuggah2670
    @lolobuggah2670 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not to over score?

    • @trahtrebor
      @trahtrebor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a thought,,,, I was always taught to make ONE cut. Making two would damage the cutter and add more edges( translated potential cracks) to fracture in a wrong manner. But the proof is in the pudding. He does multiple cuts and it works. I've scored flat glass panes twice and it worked. I've also scored once and many times would get a crack running anywhere but along the score. 😁 Personally, I'm gonna try his method, but give it a longer soak as he suggested before transferring to the shock bath.

    I mean, the reason I wanted to make it from a bottle is to get one for free from a wine bottle I have lying around. If I have to buy a tool for that I might as well buy one from the store.
