Trellis the cucumbers and you will always see the fruit hanging. Also frees up room on the ground to add another plant.

Lots of videos on this topic on TH-cam.
Annie B: The term “weed” is subject to interpretation but you can certainly eat all parts of the dandelion plant and the burdock plant from the roots up to the growing tip. Also, invasive plants such as the mint family (mint, basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, etc) are edible except that we tend to use them as herbs and garnishes and we don’t usually eat certain members such as bee balm and catnip. Other “weeds” such as crabgrass could be eaten but are mostly cellulose and cannot be digested by humans. Anyway, the list goes on and on, but check before you eat...some plants are extremely toxic such as deadly nightshade.

Mint is a magic crop. It grows out if you harvest it. It grows out if you don't. Until all you have in your garden is MINT! :) Planted for a friend, told him to trim the mint. He didn't. Came back 3 years later, and he basically had mint lawn. Gotta keep an eye on crops like this :)
Same for me. Had to plant them in pots to keep them under control!
I actually tried planting mint in the lawn last year to let it spread (it's mostly weeds anyway), so the yard would smell like mint when I cut it, but they didn't take. 😥

@@MariaLuna-ri3cv It was peppermint. It just didn't take for some reason. I've also noticed it's dying back out back where I initially planted it as well. Maybe it was too shady and/or dry?
@@UrbanGardeningWithD.A.Hanks14 When I first planted mine I kept it potted. Then I put it in the ground. I'll have to dig it up and start again as it is growing weedy now. I managed to keep it in the corner of the bed for years. It does come up in the lawn. I dig up up those vines to maintain it and usually give those babes away. I'll be keeping them this time to start afresh.
Nice video, thanks for sharing the knowledge. Just two things I wanted to add:
1) Rosemary and lavender have leaves. I know they don't look like leaves, but they are. And harvesting regularly does cause them to split and generate new branches.
2) Peppers will continue to ripen on your counter. My wife's colored peppers were succumbing to pests while waiting to turn red, orange or yellow until she started picking sooner. She started picking when the size was about right (even for green peppers), and they finished ripening on the counter, and tasted great.
Although lavender is used as an herb, it is usually categorized as a flower.

I have read that peppers do NOT continue to ripen after you pick them, as in, their flavor doesn't get any better, unlike with tomatoes.

I would encourage when harvesting herbs, that you take only what you will use fresh (and dried to get you through the winter), leaving the rest to flower for the bees.

Love this episode Luke. Growing plants in this way especially lettuce, where you can remove the outer leaves and keep harvesting over months really, helps folks who have limited space. It also makes folks get to know about gardening more as they become more familiar with regards to successional sowing as it will mean they need to think how many harvests they can get before they need new ones to replace it. Great video

Peppers are perpetual plants, but you need to overwinter them.

Toodles Mossberg 😮😂 wow if I lived near you I would happily help you harvest some of those zucchini. You are in my prayers, because man that’s going to be a ton of zucchini. You may end up having to start a little zucchini farmers market. 😁 well that’s pretty exciting. Good luck with everything.
Hi Toodles. A time-honored tradition with Zucchini is "Dump and Run". In my neighborhood everyone makes sure to roll their car windows up and lock their car doors at night, thus ensuring that in order for anyone to "gift" them with zucchini one must at least have the nerve to sneak up onto the porch in the dark! ;-)
You can pickle them just like cucumbers. Try adding different flavors to each jar, like garlic, peppers, dill, peppercorns, etc and different combinations so that opening up each new jar is kind of exciting. Chocolate zucchini bread in muffin size freezes well in freezer ziplock bags. Also zucchini sliced in half brushed with a little oil or Italian dressing is great on the grill. Also just plain ol sauteed with a little salt and pepper and garlic if you like, goes with just about any meal. -From someone who planted about 20 zucchini last year. We moved into a new house mid-summer and beans and squash were just about the only things I could direct sow and have mature in time, so we had a whole garden of them. There were times I was starting to resent them, but over the long winter it was so nice to still have that gift from the garden and a reminder of what we have to look forward to (gardening in general I mean, not gallons of zucchini...). If you still have more than you can handle, try checking out local food banks, soup kitchens, or even farmers markets to see if you can off-load some if need be.
Dehydrating for winter use is also an option, then store for zucchini bread.
In the 70's we canned zucchini with pineapple juice and extract or almond flavoring. It tasted like fruit and made wonderful Jello, salads, cakes.

My mint needs pruning. I better cut those seeds off.

I let it flower to attract pollinators. I noticed this week tons of stingerless bees love my basil

I grow all 5 of those plants you mentioned for this very reason, they keep producing most all season long. Great for business farms too as well as home gardeners. Another exponential crop in the south is Okra, if you don't pick it daily it will stop but if you keep it picked it will produce a lot.
And it's really the only thing that survives the heat. It just thrives in it.

My majoram grows well and it has spread, i leave the small white flowers for the many bees that love it, and i can always still find usable leaves... It is not in full sun at my front door garden and the smell after picking is amazing.
I have trouble growing many herbs but this one never dies back completely and from one plant ive had years of majoram and so have the bees! Love your videos

The moment I heard you talking about flowers on my basil plant, I stopped the video and ran outside to cut off all the flowers that were growing on top of my plants. Now I have a bowl full of leaves ready to use my my cooking. By the way, I got those leaves with a long stem so that I can strip the bottom of leaves and place them in water. After 1 to 2 weeks, they will start to grow roots and I can plant them to get even more plants. I’ve done it before, and it works! Thanks!

I just wanna say that somehow you always manage to put an interesting or somewhat new spin on the 'ol TH-cam "top 5-10" vids. Not only that but yours are genuine. What I mean in this case by "genuine" is you're not just trying to cash in on a TH-cam algorithm like so many channels that use this format in a reductionist way.
Anyways, I really enjoy your channel and new take on an old method regarding presenting your info. I found this title/concept particularly interesting.

Grew zucchini one year and had one plant just stop producing. In one week I missed one fruit buried in the center of my four plants. It went from the size of my finger to the size of a watermelon. Picked it and feed it to pigs. Yah gotta remember where you seen small fruits. And keep up.

I love my basil plants! I have 8 (3 purple 5 green) gowing together in a small, acute corner of one of my beds, about a inch to two apart. Looks like a perfectly circular bush, almost decorative. Whatever I harvest today, will be replaced within a couple days. Its definitely a very giving plant and perfect for small spaces.

Awesome video ! I learned some new things on your video thank you so much! Have been growing a vegetable Garden past 3 years, I wondered why my cucumber plants or Vines, LOL, only grew only one cucumber or two cucumbers, I left the cucumbers on the vine in hopes of the Cucumber would grow bigger, now I know where I went wrong, same thing with my bell pepper plants, 2 bell peppers per plant maybe three, I did not pick them I was hoping they would turn red before I pick them, now from your video I'll know to pick the bell peppers off the plant at the right time and also have to pick the Cucumbers off at the right time so they'll grow three times as many fruit or vegetables and four times as many after I pick for the Third growing wave, thank you anyway you help me out a lot! I did not know beans cucumbers and bell peppers and pepper plants behave that way but thank you for letting me know, I'm always open to learn more and I'm glad I am cuz I would have never known this if I was not open to learning more we're always students and always learning no matter what, ! Some people learn a tiny bit about growing vegetables and think they know everything about growing vegetables but I know there's always more to learn! Thank you for your video I learned a lot I subscribed and put thumbs up on your video you're helping out a lot of people! God bless you and yours!
I'd love to see a video on perpetual harvest plants vs exponential ones. This is the first time i've heard of that distinction so i'm curious to find out more. As gardeners it's very useful to know what the 'normal' behavior is of the plants we grow. :)

Thanks Luke, great information. Wish I would have known this when I lived in NY. I've been living in Central Florida now for the past ten years and it's been hard to garden down here because of different growing season's here. What to grow at different times of the year and what can take the heat. July through August is our dormant season here because of the amount of rain and humidity. Still trying to figure it all out.

what I would like as a new gardener are videos that cover crop "X" from start to kitchen. what plants can go next to each other, for watering purposes and fertilizer usage. I have been watching all your clips to try and put them into some master plan that works for my crops but it is getting confusing. that said I am still learning from you channel and think you have a good presentation.

Very good description on seed plants stressed into hyper reproduction , most annual flowers will produce more flowers if you regularly pinch the dead heads before they can mature seeds.

Luke, i tried bush cucumbers this year. Heavy producing on compact bushes. Got 16 pints of pickles from lke 8 plants, not to mention the early and late outlayers. They werent as dense as pickling cuke, but held up pretty well for dill

We just started Container gardening this season. We are blown away by how much the single Zucchini plant is producing. We have harvested 10 to 12 from a single plant, and it is still producing more.
