- "Stormy Weather" is a 1933 song written by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem. It has since been covered by artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra, Clodagh Rodgers, and Reigning Sound; but most famously by Lena Horne and Billie Holiday. The song tells of disappointment, as the lyrics, "Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky" show someone pining for her man to return. The weather is a metaphor for the feelings of the singer; "stormy weather since my man and I ain't together, keeps raining all the time."
Eleanora Fagan (April 7, 1915 - July 17, 1959), professionally known as Billie Holiday, was an American jazz musician and singer-songwriter. Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo.
Billie is accompanied by Joe Newman (tp); Paul Quinichette (ts); Oscar Peterson (p); Freddy Green (g); Ray Brown (b); and Gus Johnson (d). Recorded in New York, July 27, 1952 (Clef Records)
Don't know why
There's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Life is bare
Gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just can't get my poor self together
I'm weary all the time,The time
So weary all the time
When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away
Old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all the time
When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away
Old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all the time
....one bar and you know it's Billie...absolutely original and cherished.
Now I know why my mum used to sing this every time it looked like it's going to rain. She had a contralto and instilled in me the love of music. Billie, you are forever in my mind.
This is DEFINITELY my favorite version...love you Ms. Holiday with all my heart! Sister!
Mine, too, but Etta sure is a close second . Ms. Holiday was the definition of soul, WAY before the public got ahold of the term.
My favorite version too! She is absolutely amazing!!!
Anyone who's familiar with recordings of this song by the likes of Lena Horne or Judy Garland knows that this is a song for a big voice. Billie Holiday did not have a big voice. Yet she managed to strip away the ornamentation provided by the typical 'torchy' approach to this song and instead drill down to the intimacy of the lyrics and reinvent the melody in a way that suits her perfectly. Only a genius with deep, musical instinct can do this so naturally. And that's Billie.
I agree. I fell in love with her style of singing a long time ago.
agree
You are correct, she owned this version of this classical beautiful piece of poetry and her presence and timmig is on ☝️
One of the Greatest voices of the 20th Century, Barr none!!!! You can hear her pain in every groan!!!! 🙌🏾
Beautiful
Pure class love it
"Ol' Rockin chair will get me" was the lyrics that got me. From there on i was sold on Billy Holiday.
Mine, too.
Wunderbar
Though it has been covered by many fine vocalists, nobody does it better than Billie Holiday. Others just seem sweet, in comparison. She just sings the song, no fancy effects, just every bit of raw emotion coming through, and into our hearts.
Oh, to have music like this today! Quality lyrics, quality singing. Pity I was too young to enjoy it.
Listen to Frank Sinatra's version of this...best music ever! But Billie does it better than the others besides Sinatra.
+M.J. Leger É importante destacar que ele esperava para ouvir a interpretação dela, para saber por onde começar
It doesn't get better than this! 💕
FANTASTIC!!!!
A majestic tune from a regal Lady. Priceless.
Nos tempos nublados, eu ouço a Billie, sou apaixonada por esta letra/música....Fui feliz numa época em que pertenci a mim mesma....
Ñao te entendeu ñada!
I was born and raised in the Detroit area. Blessed to have 3 older brother's and a sister. All owned 45's. I was born into this life when my Mother was 46. I used to listen to my mother play these great women on the stereo. Lady Gaga you got nothing on these chicks honey. Thank you for posting. Love it. God Bless
Don't know why there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together,
Keeps rainin' all of the time
Oh, yeah
Life is bare, gloom and mis'ry everywhere
Stormy weather
And I just can't get my poorself together,
I'm weary all the time
So weary all the time
When he went away the blues walked in and met me.
Oh, yeah
If he stays away old rockin' chair will get me.
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me walk in the sun once more.
I can't go on, can't go on, can't go on, ev'ry thing I had is gone

Over 60 year`s and still on top..
Best version ever!!!
Billie sings like a saxophone.
"Don't know why..." best not to try to figure everything out. Just sing and live. Billie's message.
Немеркнущая красота. Супер. Благодарю.
BILLIE HOLIDAY; MY GIRL!!! I WAS INTRODUCED TO HER MUSIC WHEN I WAS 16 YEARS OLD AND HAVE LOVED HER EVER SINCE. SHE SANG HER LIFE AND MINE, THEN AND NOW. I HAVE MANY OF HER CD'S THAT I BOUGHT FROM J&R MUSIC WHO, UNFORTUNATELY NO LONGER SALE MUSIC OR MOVIES. BUT TRY OLDIES. COM THEY HAVE JUST ABOUT ANYTHING YOU WOULD WANT!!!
Love this lady! I wish I could have seen her in person!

Can not replicate Billie ...another reason to support individualism culture ...freedom to create other Billies ...enjoy your Holiday weekend 😉
Haunting and heartfelt!
This woman was a wonderful singer. Top of the class!!! Beautiful!!
Nada mais fascinante que ouvir esta Diva inesquecível.... Demais pro meu coração...belas recordações.....O tempo deveria voltar á época em que fomos felizes.....

The best version of this song ❤, me thinks.
I love me some Billie Holiday!!!! This song makes me think of my grandma because its her favorite song!!
I love her voice! ♥
Such an unmistakable voice.
she quoted everything she sings about is part of her life+ never sings the same tempo over twice. love her. she kicked those doors in for the jazz era. spectacular.
Been listening to these jazzy women in the car ....so smooooth
Comment ne pas aimer? merci pour le partage
God - this sure sums up mood.
Gets me every time. What a voice and such emotion xxxSusan 🐛🦋🧚⚘🥴🤞💥🙏🏻
Etta is the best at making you feel she is singing only to you ,, she is such a great friend in music
I love them both but Billie's got the edge on this version
Billie touched the soul, heart, and raw nerve of every song she sang. What a beautiful brassy instrument she had. I also love Judy Garland's version on her amazing Carnegie Hall concert album. I don't want to compare the two versions because I love them both! Enjoy this beautiful music.
Wonderful!
Wow! Just hauntingly beautiful! Amazing!
Can't go on, everything I've had is gone......Lovelorn lyrics.... I feel this way about what has happened to jazz. It is relegated to small corners of the world. There are jazz musicians and singers scuffling through this musical desert in the USA. Shameful for the national treasure to be tossed away the way it is. I hear ya', Lady.
Nobody responded to you for 11years😢 I feel you, yet we all have this great tool now, let’s enjoy while we can❤
I’m listening to this song right now on my KEF Q speakers. Wow
Never forget Lady Day
this song got me through some heavy times :( :)
Esta la voz q mas llega,.......,para mí la mejor con diferencia!
I read ( Past Tense ) your brilliant comment about the lyrics and the information about the Cotton Club. Thanks . ( very old Brazilian man )
Love you Billie ...love you Kid !...
I actually cried because she hit every note perfectly...
Es tan deliciosa la unión de voz y canción que mis oidos se mezclan con mi corazón para bailar juntos y disfrutar!!!!
stormy weather, since my man and i ain't together, raining all the time. i'm weary all the time, so weary all the time.
It's nice to see that what's new isn't always what's best- beautiful voice- Excellent choice!
Dave Austin stunning, isn't she? too bad it was smack, think if she'd just smoked more pot? sigh. stormy weather's making me blue.
Update Madame? Outta there yet?
Dave Austin the white ribbit abides.
She died of cirrhosis of the liver. Alcohol killed this woman. Drugs helped, sure...but booze definitely did her in.
absolutely one of my favorite songs... love this version, i think today they murdered this song with modern versions...
Effortless! Nobody comes close! Love Billie ❤️
Nice piece of info from RMTv on this ancient treasure...Thank you.
❤️
2013, and I love this song as if I were a contemporary...

No one should have sung SW after Billie
Totaly agree..
Doriesep6622, lmao omg, she killed it, but Ella and Etta James did their things, and i love all 3 versions and the different styles from those divas, but Billie? Ha ha ha off the chain. Smh.
She was awesome. What a voice!!
Nah, man, EVERYONE should sing SW because of this! I came to learn the song myself....
Maybe nobody should have recorded it after Billie but we all love singing it!
The One and Only - Salute to you Billie!!!
beautiful
à flor da pele...quanta sensibilidade
Great info.
From what I understand, Arlen and Koehler originally wrote this for Cab Calloway to perform in a 1933 "Cotton Club Revue". Unfortunately for him, he waited too long in deciding whether to perform it, so Arlen took the song to bandleader Leo Reisman, who first recorded it that February (with Arlen's vocal). Its success prompted the Cotton Club management to give it to Ethel Waters to sing in that revue {successfully persuading her not to retire, in the bargain}.
I’m in love with Billie. Don’t tell Erin.
Lady Day...Amazing!!!
Billie Holiday eterna.
Keeps rainin all the time!
Classic BILLIE HOLIDAY !
old rocking chair will get me!!!
Divino
The best voice for this song by far, yes; who can argue. But this particular version leaves out this Harold Arlen song's remarkable, odd, poignant "Interlude," which you can find in Ethel Water's and Lena Horne's versions online. Not sure why Billie omits it.
Lovecraft Country brought me here :)
what a treasure
NICE SONG PRE SENED WELL. I DO YHIS ONE WITH MY GUITAR AND ENJOY IT.
this is how i got my singing voice from listening to this amazing voice
MY GIRL!!!
rip billie ❤❤
A vida é nu, melancolia e mis'ry em todos os lugares
clima de tempestade
Really wish kids today KNEW REAL music like WE did!! What they THINK is music is so empty! Compared!
damn good music I wish I was there
this goes to 3 hundred trillion, its just a matter of time.
I think this version will go way beyond.. To outperform Bille is just impossible.
Has anyone heard Jeff Lynne's version? Quite innovative.
Etta James or Billie Holiday? I will have both thank you very much.
Two of my favourite singers. Both did superb renditions of this song.
I think Billie would be fantastic singing the Little Dragon song, also called stormy weather.
aah the famous suicide curse song.
this woman could sing!
close your eyes you're in a smoke filled club sipping a drink with friends - no better song or artist to listen to, where has all the class gone you don't get that from todays music
I'm writing that sheet music now
Would love to hear Erika Badu redo this classic
why wasn't she put on Beatles Sgt pepper cover and memorized in jazz+ pop culture. I think it would have been a nice tribute.
I have more of her music than anyone
Billie, Elis, Sara, Nana, Aretha, Dalva, Piaf, Angela e Janis. Prá que mais?
@Mrs. BiLLieHoLiday next track and LOL this bro can FeeL this. Peace
Billie Holiday with her warm raw voice still was one of the human beeings that disappear nowadays - replaced by android apple.samsung.gaga-CybOrgs. This is the end!
John Ambrose McClaren’s great grandmother 😭😭😭😭
I heard a song she sang "been down so long...down dont worry me" i cant find it. anyone can help me?
