    Nice job, I’ve done it twice and have always told people that even if the wave wasn’t at the end of the hike, it would still be amazing with the ambient environment on the way in…

      I agree. Most folks just head straight to 'The Wave', but CBN itself is beautiful. I always try and start my hike at dawn so that I am in the CBN permit area at sunrise. The colors are wonderful.

    This is the best video I've seen related to The Wave. I particularly liked the still images and the inclusion of the camera and its settings for the image. Also good to know that the lottery is poorly implemented (e.g. that you never connected via online, emphasizing there should be a progressive priority given to previous applicants). We'll probably end up going to Kanab and "hanging out" until we can connect. But, that is still a hassle and creates inappropriate bias toward people like us who can do this.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like a good plan John. You'll have a great time. The Kanab lottery is now online and is held two days prior to the hiking date. You can read about it at shniks.blogspot.com/2021/02/photographing-wave-coyote-buttes-north.html

    Thank you for sharing your photography settings and commentary. You said to be sure to get back to your car before dark.... but then you showed a spectacular Milky Way image while in The Wave. LOL As an Astro-Photographer, I would love to capture the Milky Way and star trails at The Wave.

      Hi and thanks for your feedback. You are allowed to hike in from midnight to midnight, the day of your permit. For night photos, I normally start my hike at midnight. But you really need to understand GPS coordinates and have route finding skills in the dark, Assuming you are going for the Milky Way, you will be going when there is no moon and that area is very dark.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations Maricel - you will love it. It really is beautiful. Do try and start early in August as it is hot. I suggest to start the hike (so be at the parking lot) at dawn. Download an offline version of Google Maps for that area and then put in 'The Wave' into Google Maps and use the hike icon to get directions. My biggest tip is to hug the cliffs (i.e. don't go down into the sand) until you are near The Wave. And do try and check out the other features too. It is a gorgeous area and you might not get lucky again. Have fun! :-)

    Very informative video!
    I am going in a few weeks. I would like to do some astrophotography. What time would you recommend starting from the trailhead? Any recommendations for doing night photography with an iPhone?
    I appreciate any guidance you are able to provide. Happy hiking!

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nikkie. Your permit allows you to enter the area from midnight onwards. I would say start the hike at that time. Be warned there are no trails and navigating at night will be challenging. So definitely be prepared with Google maps (offline) to get there. Also do ensure you are going on a night with no moon during the hours when you're there. There are some videos on TH-cam for night photography with an iPhone. Essentially download an app that will let you control the shutter speed of your phone. You'll need to be around 15 seconds or so before star trails show up.

    Awesome video!! Such great details on your routes and photos! Thank you for sharing! They say the hike tot the wave is strenuous, how strenuous would you say it is? Thank you!

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words. It actually is not that strenuous - they make it out to be more strenuous than it really is. Don't get me wrong, it is not a walk in the park, but as long as you carry enough water and food and go rested, you will be just fine. It is around 3 miles one-way to the feature - the first 1.2 miles are on a well marked trail. The next 1.8 miles are on (mostly) sandstone, but there is no marked trail - so you have to use the provided pictorial map given when you win the lottery. I highly recommend trying out for the lottery - it is a spectacular hike.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely should attempt the walk in lottery, especially in Jan and Feb. During these months, the lottery for Sat/ Sun and Mon is held on Friday itself (so they draw for 30 spots instead of 10 on Friday) - much better odds. I would also try right now because there are no foreign tourists due to COVID-19 and hence better odds of winning. it is a breathtaking hike - hope you get a chance to see it.

      That sucks David. When were you supposed to go? If the road from the North is impassable, you can always enter from the South, via 89A. I wish they gave complete information.

    • @Johanhojan
      @Johanhojan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLightExplorer Tomorrow, August 24. I did see photos from a FB group after and it does look bad. It was a risk to take during monsoon season I suppose. I applied for two years. The first thing I was told during orientation was it was “impassable for a 4X4 or Jeep” which was gut wrenching. They did mention the southern route, but I am actually staying in Kanab and it’s so out of the way and I brought my family. At least now I’ll have a better game plan which is to book a hotel in Page after hearing about the road conditions and not planning in advance. Sorry, I am a bit bummed.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      David just go from the South. I'm also going tomorrow as part of the Safety Patrol. I'll be at the trailhead around 7:30 AM and then head to The Wave. I went yesterday too to patrol and the road from the South was clear.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are welcome. You cannot stay overnight as your permit is valid from 0001 Hours to 2359 Hours during the date of your permit. What I do is, start my hike at a little after midnight and then arrive at 'The Wave' by 2 AM or so - enough time to photograph the Milky Way or the night sky.

      @@TheLightExplorer For people first time go there, hiking at dark may be dangerous or get lost. if can wait till next day morning, would be better. Is anyone checking the permit that strictly? Thanks.

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they have rangers there, constantly checking permits. It is up to you if you want to stay until next day, but you definitely risk getting fined (especially since your car is at the parking lot, which they check and you are not supposed to have your car overnight there).

    Great how many permits are given each day just found you 👍😎

    • @TheLightExplorer
      @TheLightExplorer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ken - Currently only 20 permits are issued daily (10 online for the day of the hike, with the lottery running 3 months before that date and 10 via walk-in in Kanab, the day before the hike). However from Feb 1, 2021, they are increasing these permits to 64 a day (48 via online and 16 via walk-in). You can find the details and the application process at www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/arizona/coyote-buttes-north (Select 'Coyote Buttes North' - that is where 'The Wave' is located). I am giving my thoughts based on my trip yesterday (Jan 11, 2021) to the same trailhead (as I had hiked to Buckskin Gulch). The first 5 miles are fine - washboard. The last 3 to 3.5 miles have ruts, but you can go around them. I saw several sedans in the parking lot.
