I was trying to decide if I'd try macrame but I didn't want to commit to buying cord, etc. Being able to use my yarn from other hobbies in the exact project I was interested in is fantastic!!! I already made one leaf following this video and I'm excited to make more. Thank you
Thank you Patty…….glad I found you. Now I know I can do macrame “again”. I used to do it about 45 years ago. I forgot it. So, you made it easy again. I was trying to figure out how by just looking at my I-pad. Couldn’t
I've just started making macramé feathers but was getting so frustrated that I couldn't get a perfect feather shape. I never thought about using my rotary cutter. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and tricks. I had to subscribe :) xo
I almost spent a lot of money to buy those! I never thought it could be so easy and fun to make! Its appreciated so much more knowing I made this and people ask where I bought it from. Thank! Thank you so much!!!!
Patti, thanks for some awesome ideas to do these. You obviously spent some time thinking of the best and easier ways to do this! I appreciate your expertise!
I think the feather is really neat and you give great instructions. Thanks for showing this in English, I tried to find how to do this and couldn't understand their measurements. Joyce Grigsby
While I was looking at macrame feather tutorials using regular cording, I was about to search ones with yarn and TH-cam read my mind and recommended yours without me even searching it? BUT I just have to say, I've been doing macrame for a few months and your trick to use an 8-inch book (or any specific size of book) BLEW MY MIND. I've been measuring a reference piece and using that piece to cut each piece, one at a time, for months. The video overall was great, but that hack alone is truly changing my whole perspective on how long these projects can take.
That would definitely take a long time to cut each strand separately for sure. Glad my video was suggested for you. Macrame can be time consuming but very rewarding and I do find it relaxing.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Oh it does, haha. I think that's part of why I put off more projects for a while. The one I'm doing is a gift my sister requested for her birthday (today actually) and that's why I got back into it. I also find it relaxing! I do have one question though: If you're trying to create fringe with a pet brush but it isn't working, what else should you try? I bought a pet brush specifically for it and it just isn't doing the trick. The cording itself is 3ply, 0.078inches (2mm) thick, and is meant for cooking, but cooking twine is what I used for my other projects (3mm size) and I just fringed each string individually with a sewing pin and comb.
Make sure the pet brush does not have bent metal teeth. They need to be straight. The pet brush is the best tool I have found yet to unravel the cord for the fringe. But you can also use a hair comb but chances are you will break some of the teeth on it. Hopefully the cord or twine you are using is a twisted cord and not braided. Braided cord is much harder to unravel. If you are having a hard time brushing out your fringe than make sure you are separating the plys by twisting in the opposite direction to get it started and then start brushing.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts The bent metal teeth must've been the issue. I've gone through with pliers and bent as many back to be straight as I can and it seemed to help! So thank you so much for that. I have a plastic comb, but I'm considering getting a metal one to avoid the teeth breaking. My cord LOOKS twisted, but it still will get knots as I try to get a pin through it, even when I separate the plus by twisting them, like you said (always starting at the bottom, too.) I'll look more into the differences between braided and twisted cord bc that might be my issue. Again, thank you for this advice though! I couldn't seem to find any other blogs or anything that had specific advice for this.
Absolutely gorgeous. I am in love with these. You are a wonderful teacher. I am a new subscriber and I'm looking forward to learning so much more from you.
hi 👋 New subscriber here today! These feathers are beautiful you showed us how to do this so easily. I can’t wait to do these! Tfs God bless & much love xoxo
Like how you do two sides at once call my so that's how I started doing mine as well. I also saw that you don't use any kind of fabric stiffener, I was hoping you were going to talk about that because I need it for mine they are to limp
So pretty! Thank you for showing us your technique. My feathers never quite come out as good. My cord is 3 strand, so I think it makes it more challenging.
Just ordered the set with cutter and board after watching your video i had just sat and cut a feather first time with scissors and your way looked alot easier especially with my shaky hands 😂
You might have a hard time with beads. The weight of them will pull the leaf apart and make gaps if you add them before or after. Maybe try and add some accent embroidery thread with some of the cords if you want pops of colour or look for very light items to glue on afterwards.
Hi Patti, had to write back tonight. I made a multicolor yarn feather today. It came out beautiful with your great instructions. The yarn I used was Red Heart Super Saver. The package says Medium 4, but it not cotton. It is thin and looks funny hanging because it looses its shape. Where did you buy your Bernat Cotton yarn ? My name is Patty too. Once again, the Best Tutorial Video I have watched. Any suggestions for backing, was thinking cardboard or felt. What would you use ?? Thank You
You can buy cotton yarn at most craft stores like Michaels or Walmart or online. It’s the same yarn that is used to make dishcloths. I prefer to use the cotton because it combs out nice to make a fringed feather or leaf. I don’t back my leaves. I leave them natural. If you want to stiffen them up a bit then you can spray them with hairspray and if you want them to stay more rigid than you can back them with felt.
My friend sent me this link. I really want to try this. Since I can't walj in a straight line & definitely can't cut evenly I'd need to find or make a leaf pattern. 🤣 How many times did you wrap the yarn around the book? Thoughts on adding charms to the middle section?
The yarn gives a softer look and is easy to comb out. Jute is a lot stiffer and it will be harder to form the soft edges of the leaves and is difficult to comb out.
Yes, I would insert a wire for the middle of the leaf for sure. For really large feathers you might want to mount them on a piece of felt to hold their shape. You can also spray them with hair spray if you are into that.

I didn’t but there are products you can use to stiffen them if desired like spray on laundry starch, hair spray, Aleene’s Stiffen Quik etc.
Great tips thank you xx

Glad she send you the link! It depends on how many leaves you want to make. If you want to make a few of them then wrap around about 50 times.
Very pretty.
do you think you could use hemp instead of yarn? love your work btw.
Yarn and macrame cord work the best. Hemp is stiffer and you might not be happy with the fringe it makes when trying to unravel it.
What is the trick to making them keep their shape? Is it the kind of yarn you used?
I actual let mine flop naturally but if you want them to keep the exact shape you can back them with felt or you can spray them with hairspray.
This is an amazing technique, but I can’t help thinking of all the cut off yarn, wasted.
Beautiful work.
Now that you know the lengths I started with if you could always shorten the length so there is less waste.
Will this project work with jute twine instead of yarn?
The yarn gives a softer look and is easy to comb out. Jute is a lot stiffer and it will be harder to form the soft edges of the leaves and is difficult to comb out.
Do u think this technique will work for 24" - 30" ostrich feathers for a feather tree??? Thinking MAYBE if a sturdy wire was used for the stem???
Yes, I would insert a wire for the middle of the leaf for sure. For really large feathers you might want to mount them on a piece of felt to hold their shape. You can also spray them with hair spray if you are into that.
