- The plaintiff rented a home from the defendant. She says the home caught on fire and ruined all her belongings, but it started from an electrical fire. She claims the landlord won’t pay her back for her property that was destroyed, so she’s suing for the cost of belongings, pain and suffering, and the remainder of her security deposit. The defendant argues the fire was not electrical. He says the plaintiff stopped paying rent while he was in the process of evicting her

I have in my experience realized that more people are more willing to help you and to give you a break if you're respectful to them.
That is so true. I owned an auto repair business and I did a lot of charity work for people who were respectful and asked. Then I could at least know what I was going to have to do to pay my bills. Then there were those who will just scam you and laugh about it.

I feel for the plaintiff, however it looks like she was taking advantage of the living situation, moving her sister in, going on vacation when you know your rent is due. Her behavior was sus.

I understand it’s a traumatic experience but the crying when it’s her turn to speak threw me off. The whole time the Defendant was talking she & her sister were smiling, laughing, & rolling their eyes. I think she was trying to amp it up for a win.
As an insurance adjuster this was a great case. Make sure you have renters insurance even if its a low policy. A company would of covered it for her and saved her the trouble.
They need to teach people about renters insurance. When I got my first apartment, I had no idea it was a thing until my dad asked if I got it. It's so cheap compared to every other insurance.

ALWAYS HAVE RENTER'S INSURANCE. She should have been more cordial to the person who gave her a place to live and probably a decent rent amount that she could afford. That's what can happen when you rent to somebody or share space. Liek he said, if she had been nicer, he likely would have given her some money for her damaged belongings. She doesn't understand the law and it's hard being an adult, it's also expensive out here trying to live.
And get the most coverage you can afford
He didnt "*give* her a place to live" he sold her the use of a space to live...for profitable gain. Capitalism is not a social service , it's business. If he wants her "to be nice" then HE should pay HER for that community.
Any renter should have insurance. Mine is $7 a month. No excuse. She needs to learn how to be more professional when dealing in business affairs. Lesson learned.

Exactly mines was $6 extra on my car insurance for my rental back in 2001 I had an electrical fire as well no excuse she’s responsible for her own insurance.

Oh it happens, my apartment burned down a couple of years ago. I was supposed to go into to work at three. By 2:50/2:55 my apartment was on fire. I called my boss while everything I owned was burning. And told her I wasn't coming in. The next day she told me that I really should've of come in to work because the apartment was already on fire and there was nothing I could do about it. So I should of just come into work. I looked at her like the idiot she was. I had my two boys the only thing I was interested in was hugging my kids and trying to figure out my next move.

The same thing happened to me I was at work the house got caught on fire I rented a two bedroom house from my coworkers mother it was an electrical fire. I paid rental’s insurance through my car insurance and it was the best thing I’ve done this was in 2001 the lady that owns the house had her own insurance for the house it worked out for us both.
This young lady needs to grow up.She needs to check laws. Renters insurance is a must.

My best friend lost her belongings, two of her beloved pets, her house was gutted and her family had to couch surf for over a year until she was back in a home of her own, she is still affected by it years later. Insurance did save them though, people who chose not to get renters insurance are taking their chances, often, they lose….

She said it was unfair and cried again remembering his son. Like, all she did was cried and presented compeletely meritless evidence to support her claim. So yes, it is a valid suggestion to ask her to keep herself together.
At the end of the day, thank God 🙏 no one was hurt and it’s also a lesson to have renters insurance.

The plaintiff is all over the place with her emotions, she's laughing smiling then crying. She out on vacation spending the money she should be paying rent with. She has allot of nerve trying to sue that man, for her lack of rental insurance.
You do know that's how emotions work. As she was telling the story it brought her back to how she was scared that she could have lost her son. So in that moment she was sad. She genuinely thought the man was responsible because she thought it was faulty wiring and that caused her anger. People could go through multiple emotions in a few minutes. It's very common. Especially when recalling an emotional story.

This is why people have renters insurance and your landlord’s insurance does not cover the renters property that is their own responsibility. If you are not paying rent and you pretty much have no right, good grief all these people feel entitled, but they don’t want to actually do anything responsible?
Hard lesson learned. You need renter's insurance and most legit housing require you to obtain insurance as a condition of the lease.
Her job may be considered "lowly," but her actions in not paying rent, moving her sister in and going on vacation while owing rent certainly is. She didn't get the thousands she asked for. At some point, regardless of where she works or what she earns, she's gonna have to grow up and be an adult.
