For some reason I can't fathom, a lot of Rush fans don't like this album - I think maybe it's because it kinda marks the beginning of the "keyboard era" aka the '80s.. some don't like it, but it's my favorite period for their music.
This is in mho Rush at their best.....Moving Pictures is their greatest offering. Permanent waves took some beating....but this album did it.....an absolute classic.
"It’s about nineteen-eighty that I really start to like our music like a fan ... as far as achievement I really think we started to bring it together a bit with Permanent Waves…, but particularly Moving Pictures and from then on." - Neil
Neil Peart was the main lyrist. He wrote approximately 99 % of the lyrics along with the drumming Alex and Geddy wrote the music. Listening to interviews with Geddy. Neil would compose lyrics and give them to Geddy. Geddy said he had to relate to the lyrics so sometimes he used all the lyrics or liked only a few lines then he would talk to Neil. They would work on them together but it was Neil's words. Glad you guys came back to Rush! ❤❤❤ suggestions Digital Man from the Snakes and Arrows tour Secret Touch also from the Snakes and Arrows tour Cheers 🇨🇦
Rush aren't just legends in the industry, they are pioneers. Their music is so epic it changed the music scene forever. Neil, Geddy and Alex raised the bar for all musicians from then on to today. They helped set the bar. Awesome reaction🤘🏼
I always feel like a kid again when I hear Rush, that voice just puts me right back there instantly... Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I'm super grateful for the great music, laughter, and your amazing tribe... may you all feel loved and blessed today 😎🧡🤎💛
1981, I was a little kid and saw rush in concert in a little German town. Watching Geddy play bass, sing, and use moog pedals at the same time changed my life, I wanted to be Geddy. Been a bass player for 40 years because of him. With all that being said, this is a bass players song, he’s all over that bass the whole time, and that tone… awesome.
In the Moving Pictures tour book, Peart added: "'Vital Signs' was the ultimate result, eclectic in the extreme, it embraces a wide variety of stylistic influences, ranging from the sixties to the present. Lyrically, it derives from my response to the terminology of 'Technospeak,' the language of electronics and computers, which often seems to parallel the human machine, in the functions and interrelationships they employ. It is interesting, if irrelevant, to speculate as to whether we impose our nature on the machines that we build, or whether they are merely governed by the inscrutable laws of Nature as we. (Perhaps Murphy's Laws?) Never mind!" >>
Moving Pictures which Vital Signs is off of and Permanent Waves their previous album I think are Rush's two best recorded and mixed albums. They recorded both at Le Studio in Quebec. Phenomenal sound out of that room and its where they shot the music videos for Vital Signs, Tom Sawyer and Lime Light. You guys should react to Natural Science off Permanent Waves there is a few live versions on TH-cam. Happy Turkey Day Boyz!
Just binge watched all of your Rush reactions. As a 40 year Rush fan, it’s always an absolute pleasure watching people hear them for the first time. Your comments and appreciation are doing them justice. Keep listening. You’ve only scratched the surface. You have to listen to Freewill. It’s a must. In typical Rush fashion, they seamlessly weave in and out of multiple time signatures. I would also recommend that you re-listen to Working Man (your 2nd reaction video), then listen to the live version in Cleveland from the 2011 Time Machine Tour. It’s brilliant! Beyond that, you can pretty much pick ANY Rush song and be mind blown! Keep it up, guys!
You can really hear the influence The Police had on the boys on this tune.Neil really tuned his snare super tight to get that Copeland "SNAP". The bass is slapping hard as well.
Great song. Took me awhile to come around to it because there is just so much Rush. Neil and Geddy always get the thumbs up, but for me Alex is just perfect for Rush. Combining lead and rhythm that gives every song so much atmosphere. Who could possibly replace him. No one I can think of. What a trio that complement each other. Great reactions guys.👍👍
' Couragous convictions will drag the dream into existence ' (one of Neil's best lines) Neil is credited with the lyrics. Geddy does give input on some things, but it's still Neil's words. (They wisely decided to split profits evenly 3 ways since they all were contributing. No worrying about who had this idea or who came up with what riff, etc. )
If the 80s sound is your favorite, you will have a lot of music to hear. They went through large changes as a band. Starting as a zeppelin clone, then hard prog rock pioneers through 70s, then some synth 80s like what you just heard, drifting into more standard rock of the times in the 90s. They ended with a great blend of prog and hard rock after Neil returned after his motorcycle sabbatical in early 2000s. Last album (of 19) is a treasure. You have soooo much more to hear...
GREAT reaction guys!! This song is absolute fire - loved it since day 1! You can tell they were listening to The Police at the time with that reggae influenced beat/rhythm in the drums and guitar, & Geddy's incredible basslines - basically new wave-progressive reggae! A song about individuality & conformity - a topic Neil returned to quite a few times (especially in their follow up album Signals - with Subdivisions - my personal #1) What a finisher to what many consider their best album, Moving Pictures - there isn't a weak track on it - complete & amazing from start to finish. If we did a percentage of total tracks, Neil is likely in the 95% of total lyric writing...only the first album and a couple other songs were done by Geddy, or a collaboration with Pye Dubois (of Max Webster fame) - Tom Sawyer was one of these collabs. Neil would give the words to Geddy - he would interpret, suggest the odd changes (mostly for flow as he was singing it) - but it's generally ALL Neil. Geddy & Alex generally took care of the music. I would highly recommend ALWAYS doing a lyrical analysis with any Rush song! Besides the complexity (& awesomeness) of the music, the lyrics have something poignant to say. Cheers & RIP Neil!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! What a great way to start off my day! To answer the thought, Neil wrote 95 - 99% of all the lyrics beginning with the 2nd album, Fly By Night. Again Neil is looking at society and how we are looking for synthetic fixes for our discontent. A tired mind become a shape-shifter Everybody need a mood lifter Everybody need reverse polarity Everybody got mixed feelings About the function and the form Everybody got to deviate From the norm Another excellent choice! As far as other recommendations, almost anything from this album! Y'all have a great day!
It is such a song that looks forward to where the band is going to be going after completing all of movie pictures it closes it with such an optimistic and musically adventurous signature. I remember at the time, thinking that song was freaking from outer space it just had so many interesting tones and whatnot in it but they were really always ahead of the Curve
Great reaction to a song that doesn't get enough recognition. I can understand how it gets overshadowed by some of the other tracks from," MOVING PICTURES", and I myself was late to appreciate this one. So glad you enjoyed it!☮☮
This was RUSH doing The Police. They were a huge influence on all the band members in the early 80s. The next album, "Signals" was even deeper into the Police influence. Great song. Great reaction.
Thank you for the Rush reaction! Such a great song. We can’t overlook the guitar styles of Alex Lifeson. My favorite is his use of the delay pedal ( I believe that’s what was used) in the guitar riffs, it was a single riff then becomes doubled (repeated). Such a cool effect! Thanks and have a Happy Thanksgiving😊
Hey, T T, hard to believe you have not looked at the lyrics. They are Neil's master piece. It'll take you a couple of times to kind of get it...."A tired become a shape-shifter" ......holy crap. It's been too long since you last reacted to the best Band ever, IMO. However, you have not checked their best song ever (lyrics at hand) and it's a 20 minute unbelievable storyline that overshadows our present, the music, IMO, their best. It's Cygnus X-1 book II, from their album Hemispheres. Just mind blowing. I'll be looking forward to it, hope soon. Great song reaction today.
Rush...Moving Pictures took the band to the next level. They really found their sound for the masses without changing what they wanted to do. The Rush way. Please check out "Witch Hunt". That one is deep and a lot of what is happening today. This song has connections to what their own families experienced.
After 40 plus years of hearing this song, the first drum fill after the brief silent pause is still spine chill inducing, tight and tasty in every way. So good.
The thing Neil is wearing is a special recording device that only records the sticks hitting the drums and cymbals, not the usual mic system that gets the resonance also. Just the hits. That’s why the drums sound so crisp on this song.
I subscribed to your channel because I love your reactions and analysis. I can tell by going through your playlist that you love your grunge. Especially slipknot. I suggest you go down to Breaking Benjamin‘s rabbit hole. But my comment is mainly to get you to go down much further into the Rush rabbit hole. they’ve always been my favorite band and I own everything they’ve ever recorded. A couple of suggestions: flip over Caress of Steel, and do the Fountain of Lambeth reaction. A couple of more suggestions…CygnusX-1, book I from A Farewell to Kings, but IMMEDIATELY follow up (in the same reaction video) with Book II, which is the entire side 1, from the album Hemispheres. Pick anything from Permanent Waves, but you’ve already done Natural Science. Jacob Ladder might hit you right in your feels. BUT Y’all HAVE TO DO MORE RUSH PLEASE 🙏
We got to hear this live after 25 years when they first played it on their MP tour on their 2005 tour. Such an awesome song live and the visuals were crazy . This song was a signal ,literally a transition ,to their 80’s synth sound that I personally liked a lot . A lot of subtly . Not a coincidence that their next album after MP is Signals
If y'all use psychedelics I implore you to have a Rush night. Lyrics are all Neal....music is all Geddy and Alex. The ride is all Rush Your mind will be blown. Also, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd should have their own sessions
Always thought it's more abt individuals being different, having a different perspectives and being true/honest to self when it's easy to go along to get along.
I recently saw in an interview that they knew drums sounded different to the audience than they did to Neil. So they strapped a mic to Neil’s chest and wove that sound through the song.
i LOVE THE PICK! The word play is just awesome "Everybody got to elevate from the norm, Everybody got to Ev olate from the norm" the connection of computer descriptor words for circuitry cross over into human emotion.... It jumps right there from the physical to the Spiritual not Bio tech. lol🤣😂😘

There's a joke in there somewhere. I guess it's like telling your children that you love them all the same. When in actuality, you have a favorite. Out of all the songs that I've listened to by rush. I'm gonna have to say Tom Sawyer is my favorite, followed by 2112. Thanks again, guys, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Morning guys!! Happy Thanksgiving!! Love rush! A friend of mine has always said rush's music is almost prophetic! I agree!! Check out the song "the trees". It's a good one!( And a trip I went on with a rush album and some shrooms when I was younger was a voyage!)🤓😁
Personally, my favorite Rush song is ironically an instrumental piece; La Villa Strangiato. As I’m sure other people have pointed out, typically their songs are lyrics by Neil and music by Alex and Geddy.
Though it may seem to you guys, Rush rarely took us to another time and place. More often than not, they comment on various aspects of the everyday human condition as in this song. Knowing that, it’s easy to see what the song is about and where it’s coming from. After all…”everybody’s got to elevate from the norm!”, and it’s real and true.
As was Stewart Copeland on Neil. They became such close friends that Copeland was one of a very small circle who knew Neil had brain cancer starting in late 2016, which was kept secret until his death was announced in January 2020.
Another great song from Moving Pictures. How can this album not be considered one of the best not just from Rush but one of the best of the 80's!
For some reason I can't fathom, a lot of Rush fans don't like this album - I think maybe it's because it kinda marks the beginning of the "keyboard era" aka the '80s.. some don't like it, but it's my favorite period for their music.
@@BrakRulesAll I think it's because it gets overplayed especially side A, and imo Permanent Waves is just as good and more interesting.
This is in mho Rush at their best.....Moving Pictures is their greatest offering. Permanent waves took some beating....but this album did it.....an absolute classic.
This is definitely one of the best rock albums of all time. Even the guys from Dream Theater say side one is one of the best album sides of all time.

This song almost didn’t make the album for that reason . Their manager thought it sounded too much like the Police . But they won him over .
The Police never wrote anything this cool or ahead of its time. Well maybe Walking on the Moon. Lol

This is one of my all time favorite Rush songs to play on bass. Geddy is such a master at creating melodious and tight bass lines.
Remember one knows when they become the ultimate rush fam is when one realizes that all three members are as good as one another
Witch Hunt would be a great next song by Rush. One of my all-time favorites and part of the 4 songs in the Fear Trilogy. Yes, I know how that sounds.
The thing Neil is wearing is a special recording device that only records the sticks hitting the drums and cymbals, not the usual mic system that gets the resonance also. Just the hits. That’s why the drums sound so crisp on this song.

This has always been my favourite Rush song, never thought I'd see someone react to it
There are a few reactions out there. But just a few.
Always thought it's more abt individuals being different, having a different perspectives and being true/honest to self when it's easy to go along to get along.
Most of their lyrics dealt with the individual vs the collective.
In my way of thinking Vital Signs and Natural Science should be played together.
I'll be stuck in the kitchen for the next few hours, but I'll be cranking some Rush to really be thankful.
Live version is dope.
And Rush is so great that they can make a $20 video fire. 🔥🔥🔥
A personal favorite from Rush is Body Electric. 1001001
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 you have to do working man live in Cleveland !!!

Something For Nothing next please. Great lyrics and Geddy's voice at its best.
IMO the studio version from 2112 is better than most YT vids of live performances.
This is in my opinion their most underrated song

Ya'll should have been there when it was newly released. I will never forget it.
I think Geddy wrote Tears (2112) and Different strings(Permanent waves).
Another great track. At this point they were listening to The Police and the reggae beat started sneaking into a few tracks. Still unmistakable Rush.

Personally, my favorite Rush song is ironically an instrumental piece; La Villa Strangiato. As I’m sure other people have pointed out, typically their songs are lyrics by Neil and music by Alex and Geddy.
Haven't heard this in ages...just realized, the synth squiggley part sounds like it came from the stranger things sound track?
Great song
Rush were really into the Police in the late 70's, which influenced this track. Brilliant
Gotta love the old Montreal Expos hat.
Camera Eye from Moving Pictures is another great journey!
hard hitting perfection!!!
Neil Peart has a lot of his lyrics in English literature books throughout Canada. That’s what I heard.
Rush has several songs that incorporate elements of Reggae.
One of their albums, I forget which one was based on the writings of Ayn Rand its not just songs, these guys were deep and philisophical
As a RUSH fan of 45 years, VS is top 10 for me. Thanx for the pick me up!
Neil Peart writes all the lyrics with a few exceptions from a collaboration he had with pye Dubois
Side 2 is the best and hardest to play side of the album
Though it may seem to you guys, Rush rarely took us to another time and place. More often than not, they comment on various aspects of the everyday human condition as in this song.
Knowing that, it’s easy to see what the song is about and where it’s coming from.
After all…”everybody’s got to elevate from the norm!”, and it’s real and true.
this is my fave RUSH song
Cisco kid by war is an all time psychedelic cut as well
This song never got the airplay it should have, probably because it was on the B side of such an amazing album
Though it was the third song I heard off the album prior to release. 🙂
This Rush song has a great mixed Raggae sound to it.
Andy Summers from the Police was an influence on Alex in the early 80’s
As was Stewart Copeland on Neil. They became such close friends that Copeland was one of a very small circle who knew Neil had brain cancer starting in late 2016, which was kept secret until his death was announced in January 2020.
