I’ve had the opportunity to hear this masterpiece performed live last week and I’ve felt the music flow through my entire body, such a surreal experience 🤯

Respighi so much better than Stokowsky in every transcription of the great Bach's music. This is wonderful stuff. So full of rich harmonies and instrumental detail. This is such an enjoyable performance. He raises Bach's music to a higher level.....if that was possible.

Yes, he muscles it up with more power and keeps it there. Stokowsky elongates it and makes it less immediate.

It is matter of a taste. I enjoy version by Stokowski way more.

Well, i am not an expert, but in all of the passacaglia versions (piano, organ, orchestra, clavier,...) that i have listened, they are very beautiful and there is not a version that i can say its terrible. All of them are simply from other world, it just shows that Bach's passacaglia is like a glove and fits in several versions. Thanks Bach, for give us this divine masterpiece

@38Marvin38 All these orchestrations are crazy. No one has the quality of Ravel's orchestration of Mussorgsky.

Respighi's version is like a 3D coloured pallet, too much detailed, it must be listened in dts sound to clearly feel the details deeply in the soul, wow....

Superb, both as a grand organ composition and right here, too. I do not doubt that, if Bach is still following events on earth, he is very pleased with Signor Respighi's orchestration and with this performance. Let me say it will be best to listen to either version while one is contemplating the earthly ministry of Jesus, with its interviews and episodes, but over-arched with his inexorable determination to fulfill His Passion for us.

I'm sure Bach would approve of how Respighi has transcribed his amazing music. A sort of "partnership" between two geniuses.

Choosing between the Respighi and Stokowski arrangements is a more agonising task than Sophie's Choice.

Usually Stokowski is the man but for this specific piece Respighi's arrangement is just incomparable, absolute epic and perfect in every way.

There's a third version, with a more baroque orchestration, by Sir Andrew Davis. It's my favorite. th-cam.com/video/lV67Ic3BTrU/w-d-xo.html

At 7:08 The timpani is so dull. It should be bright, sharp, emphatic, triumphant and clear above the rest of the orchestra. The trill at 13:19 is weak; oh so puny. On the other hand, the horns are wonderful in this recording.
