Good list. How about the Thing staying behind on Battleworld after the first Secret Wars, Prince Namor destroys a world during the Time Runs Out story, Wolverine gets his memories back after House of M, Captain America "Hail Hydra," and the reveal that there is a super hero Illuminati which also leads to Planet Hulk/World War Hulk.
Man, Cap's suit in the 1st Avengers is such a piece of shit... Straight from party city or something! SOOO glad the Russo's gave him some good suits! Also, Gwen's death in TASM2 is one of the ONLY good scenes in that movie. As a massive Spidey fan, I thought it was full of emotion. Also read that in the original cut, Peter goes back up & beats the shit out of Harry (doesn't deserve the name GG) but it was too dark for kids (bs). Could've saved the movie tbh
Poor Thor... Losing the hammer is bad, but his name too? It's not fair. Thor was Thor since birth, before he lifted Mjolnir. I know he gave it to Jane, but she shouldn't have accepted. It's not a title, it's his identity.
M'aiq the Liar Me too, and the way they keep shoving in that Jane is so much better than Thor ever was without any real explanation only makes it worse.
***** I doubt it. There are two Mjolnirs now. Jane is gonna be cured and she'll be a super hero with the original hammer while Thor will get the Ultimate Mjolnir. Jane can't lose the hammer now or else Marvel will be accused of being misogynists.
not in some of the universe in Marvel. his hammer holds the power and real Thors essence and passes it on. if you're familiar with DC's doctor fate then it works just like his helmet
Punisher as Franken Castle and him being turned into an Angel. Both storylines were a turning point for the character in that the latter has retconned his being a Vietnam War Veteran as of recent continuity and the latter led to the character being put on a hiatus for awhile due to over saturation, only to make a triumphant return much later in the "Welcome Back Frank" storyline.
I really think Northstar's coming out had a lot more impact to the overall X-Men universe than Iceman's. Could it be he was chosen simply because there was a lot more video of him and he is more well known to the general audience? And in fact, Rogue stealing the powers of Ms. Marvel had significantly more impact and drove more story lines than both of these instances, combined. Rogue was a hardened villain and became a hero, at least in part, due to Carol's mind in her head. While coming out is a significant step in any real person's life, did it change what kind of hero either Bobby or Jean Paul was?
Great list. I know of every single one of these (except of North stars cmg out) and though I'm not crazy about some of the character changes I can't disagree that these turning points were very impact full on their respective super heros. Well done
Earth 616 nick fury is the son of the original Nick. The nick fury you're thinking about is from the ultimate universe (earth 1610) who was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson
Misty Rose it was done just for the sake of being done. If there were little hints throughout his arc it would’ve been totally fine but this feels so forced
i really think that the Spider-Man story "One More Day" should be on the list. I'm still upset about it, even though it happened almost a decade ago. And let's not forget the latest Secret Wars - re-creating the entire multiverse (or was it only Earth-616?) is, in my opinion, quite a big turning point.
- The Stamford incident, done by Nitro that lead to the Super Hero Registration Act in the first Civil War. - The Illuminati sending Hulk into space which eventually lead to World War Hulk. - Dark Reign Just to name a few.
I know, I know this is an origin story so it doesn't really apply, but...James Howlett turning into Logan/Wolverine. Of course, he's had plenty of turning points, like when Magneto pulled out his adamantium, joining the Weapon X program, etc. BUT his origin story is probably the MOST defining major turning point in his life. It basically shaped him into who he is today. Although he didn't realize his backstory until after House of M.
And then Marvel decided to retcon the Phoenix Saga by having Jean Grey in stasis and the Phoenix only taking the appearance of her thus giving a big middle finger to all the fans.
I understand from a business sense to want to capitalize on the popularity that the Phoenix Saga gave to Jean Grey. However, it seems they were only thinking in that one sense and not thinking about how it would impact the meaning of their stories.
you need to pay attention to comics. Mutants did recover from "No More Mutants", at the end of Avengers vs X-Men, Wanda and Hope Summers used their combined powers with a little phoenix force...to bring mutants back from the brink of extinction with new mutants popping up by the millions instantly. though they are on the brink again with the Inhuman terrigan mist which makes new Inhumans caught in it but kills mutants also caught with Mpox....also making every mutant steril
No More Mutants... So, what if that's what happened in Avengers 2 and why Marvel's MCU has Inhumans more prominent, with mutants never being mentioned?
here's my theory: I was watching a nerdsync vid and he said something along the lines of: "during the 50s while captain america was frozen in ice a more aggressive clone took over until the avengers de-frosted the real captain america" so I think that the aggressive one was the hydra cap the whole time
good to know, when I heard that news I didn't even get mad, because i knew it was 100% bullshit. We have had decades of Captain America comics with his first person narration, he isn't a Hydra agent. He actually belives in personal responsibility and treating others fairly and good winning over evil.
Jean wasn't the Phoenix. The Phoenix took Jean's form and hid her away within a cocoon on the bottom of the ocean. She was later discovered by the Avengers & Fantastic Four who helped her awaken and remember who she was. She then helped form the original X-Factor with the founding members of the X-Men.. This has not be retconned out.
In the 80's the biggest would have been the Legacy Virus storyline... a direct parable to the AIDS epidemic, it was only impacting upon mutants, and therefore not a concern to the humans... I think the two biggest events that came to mind weren't even mentioned... Although "No More Mutants" was significant... it was actually spun off from the "Avengers Disassembled" storyline. Avengers have never been the same since then. But the biggest would have to be that sparked by the New Warriors combating Nitro in Stamford, leading to the most ambitious storyline, "Civil War". This drastically altered many established friendships and partnerships as they were all tested. This in turn then lead to the Initiative storylines, where many heroes and villains were forced to join super hero teams or face jail.
Tony quit alcoholism because he almost died because he spent his last $10 on a bottle of whisky instead of a hotel room. he just survived the frostbite. Thats what saved him
I would love to see the original voice recordings of the 90's X-men TAS preserved, the animation redrawn/improved and then re-released. That would be GREAT!!!
House of M was Marvel's way of dropping their less successful characters in favor of giving the popular ones in more light. I don't think anyone was fooled by this.
I personally think that the Spider-Man Gwen Stacy thing should be number one, because that was the turning point that started turning points in superhero comics. Before that we didn't have turning points in superhero comics.
House of M wasn't the biggest turning point. The Dark Phoenix Saga was. What you don't realize about Dark Phoenix was for a time it was the most popular comics story ever. Jean's sacrifice to save the universe from a corrupted entity showed real pathos and maturity in comics that simply were unheard of at the time. It was released quietly in 1979-1980 and the impact of the story made X-Men the highest selling and most popular comic book of the decade. Her death was felt throughout the x-verse and even if her resurrection and 2nd death ruined the impact and morals of that story, to this day the Marvel universe is still reeling from the ramifications of the Phoenix Force for it was instrumental in the AvX storyline and death of Prof X. House of M became nullified 6 or so years after the publication because mutants are back and in full force. However the biggest contribution DPS had towards comics and the industry on the whole was that it spawned the event comic as we know it and because of Jean's death and the reaction the fans had because of it, comics publishers began hyping the deaths and milestones of all their comics from then on. Death of Superman may have made the event comic blockbuster sellers, but If there wasn't a Phoenix Saga, there wouldn't be a Secret Wars, DC's Crisis, Infinity Gauntlet, Civil War or Death of Superman.
Okay thats cute and all but this video isnt about which stories were the most influential, it was about how they changed their respective character, not the public affect. With that being said im not sure what they meant with the #1 pick, are they referring to how it affect scarlet witch or the universe as a whole because if its the latter then it dosent fit the criteria of the video.
He buried his sexuality because being both gay and a mutant would suck. He kept it suppressed for so long that he as an adult believes he is straight and still dates women. Mind you his time displaced younger self is openly gay.
...Suddenly...Life has new meaning to me...There's the missing piece I guess, my ideology to recompense. Suddenly, that one cutaway gag in Family Guy makes seeeheeeennnnse...[Pats Iceman on the shoulder] She was right to walk away...
SPOILER FOR Nº1 Actually, even though the House of M storyline ended with the incredible reduction of the mutant population, this was restored after the Avengers vs X-men event, again, by the Skarlet witch (with the aid of Hope Summers). I don't know much about it afterwards and before the reboot Marvel did with secret wars and battleworld, but they kinda undid the House of M ending.
Damn I hate that No more Muntant! The X-Men fought their hardest and lives we're taken. They fight for Muntant rights and House of M happen and Scarlet Witch just went No More Muntant there goes that hard work. Then more mutants for back father Avengers Vs X-Men
not an alternative reality version. it's actually his past self... anyway he later confronted the current 616 version of himself and he admitted it too (in Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 600)
Well Aaron has esentially used his previous run to justify why thor is unworthy: Gorr is right. Still he took a clue out of bendis book and took his time, in fact, TOO MUCH TIME to explain it.
I think it could have been good, except the absolute dumbest aspect was Jane Foster using the name Thor. Other people had wielded Mjolnir before, but none went by Thor. It just seemed dumb.
you forgot to say Spiderman throwing his marriage away to Mary Jane Watson because he can't live without Aunt May even she was ready and even tell him so or the One more Day storyline
I'm sorry. The "Ice Man is gay" story-line was just an utter fuck up of a decent character. I am cool with north star, fine with shatter Star, even thought it was progressive when they made Colossus gay in the _Ultimates_ universe. But to just take an established character with a specific orientation for _years_ and turn him around for *no real reason* in main continuity.... that to me just made no sense. it felt very... _forced._
it would have been beter to make him Bisexual or Pnasexual to keep respect to his history and to see if he could have a relationship with a man while still respecting his previous romances
Yeah, I could more get behind that reasoning, or say he's now more becoming more open to exploring his sexuality as he's gotten older. This, however, is the most blatant attempt at shoving acceptance into the audience faces I have ever seen. I'm all for diversifying stories and making characters grow, but playing with a persons sexuality and saying they "Repressed it" for over 50 years is just bad, lazy writing. I expect more from Marvel with characters we hold so dear.
yeah i know. But it was Bendis. he could have AT LEAST make and attempt to show both icemen seen to be attratcted to both male and female during the runs of all new and uncanny, showing they are bi por pan but he went the easier route and sayin just because your past self is gay you are gay too, when it actually showed the past X men are completely different but similar people form the present x men
2:10 I just think Bendis had no desire for X-titles so he threw that in as a F*** up of status quo. I know actual gay guys from comic cons who found this stupid & an unnecessary turn.
These changes aren't really that bad...taken out of context and acceptance it's sounds dumb but within their respective storyline most of them are pretty good
not really, like bobby drake being gay came from nowhere, thor becoming unworthy is a good concept, that they messed up royally by having jane foster thor comics be poorly written, and heavy handed in it's message, they had to change odin into a ranting and raving misogynist just to create drama.
I have to know what Fury whispered in Thor's ear to make him unworthy of Mjolir! Also, there is a rumor the next X men movie could be the Dark Phoenix story....I suggest a two parter for that one.
Scroll back up and watch the video!!!
Lol u got me bro
but im on phone
Got em
YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO
+Tatum Thomas Im on phone ur still got to scroll up

The Phoenix saga definitely is one of my favorite comic book storyline. Talk about epic drama.
"Cyclops kills Professor X!"
Who hasn't killed Professor X?
Im still not over Gwen's death
Unless he saw that not so good movie with all the villains and Andrew Garfield.
+The Spectre Talk about never moving on, even Spider-Man did
My Dad still gets teary eyed when talking about it.
+The Spectre i first knew about it from the movie
i was laughing it was hilarious.
What about the part where Batman gathers all 7 dragonballs and becomes Hokage and defeats Cory in his house?
xD
No, Cory was out of the house. So Lex Luthor became Superman and froze the sun.
Soumyo Ghosh oohhhh right and that's when Homer defeats Lex with Exodia and becomes a Pokemon master
+J. Han but zack and cody ganged up and kill homer so they could become digimon masters?
+SaVg Nexon yea but pikachu gathered the chaos emeralds and killed homer because he lost his beyblade ripstick
nightcrawler finding out mystique was his mom should've been a honerable mention
Nah it's a good issue but not so significant to the history
I thought Civil War deserved a spot, even if Honourable Mentions
Nice list,I like what you did with Tony beating his alcoholism being the #6 on the list and not using that horrible Ret-Con of being "Adopted.".
You forgot when Magneto ripped out the metal of Wolverine
Shoutout to Joey, love seeing you writing on WatchMojo!
That's a really very good video. I like it. Please do Top 10 DC Super Hero Turning Points.

***** No, I wrote Avengers. His suit in The First Avenger is awesome
Where can you find that scene, heard about it before but never found it
TheComicMaster1995 unfortunately, I don't think it's ever been released \:
Thats a shame, don't know why they didn't leave it in the movie, when I first watched it, I was waiting to see Spidey rage like he did in the comics
TheComicMaster1995 Same, especially considering the final fight was awful.. And not much of a fight
Poor Thor... Losing the hammer is bad, but his name too? It's not fair. Thor was Thor since birth, before he lifted Mjolnir. I know he gave it to Jane, but she shouldn't have accepted. It's not a title, it's his identity.

What about Civil War. It had a major impact on the Marvel timeline
*the former caused his origin as a Vietnam War Veteran to be retconned.
Sorry about that typo
I really think Northstar's coming out had a lot more impact to the overall X-Men universe than Iceman's. Ive been waiting for this 1!!!!
My favourite turning point in the Marvel Comics would be the entire "Old Man Logan" series.
Great list. I know of every single one of these (except of North stars cmg out) and though I'm not crazy about some of the character changes I can't disagree that these turning points were very impact full on their respective super heros. Well done
Nick Fury turning black?
Alternate timeline
Earth 616 nick fury is the son of the original Nick. The nick fury you're thinking about is from the ultimate universe (earth 1610) who was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson
I think Black Nick Fury is part of the "Ultimate" universe.
+haustyl12 *black 616 nick fury
+freddy rodriquez L
I cried so much when I saw "No More Mutants"......reminds me of Wanda's tragic comic history x'c
I just really don't understand why Iceman had to be gay, what about all the girls he was involved with?
thats is the reason it would have made more sense to make Boby Bisexual or Pansexual.
Yea that one more than any other felt super forced
Misty Rose it was done just for the sake of being done. If there were little hints throughout his arc it would’ve been totally fine but this feels so forced

Last time I was this early, the U.K. was still in the EU
This one is good
+Jaapio *this one is unoriginal
Pokemaster6782 I'm never early so I never see those comments but I like it
this comment got me rolling xD
LOL ah man, too soon!
- The Stamford incident, done by Nitro that lead to the Super Hero Registration Act in the first Civil War.
- The Illuminati sending Hulk into space which eventually lead to World War Hulk.
- Dark Reign
Just to name a few.

+Jaapio that's the point
+Peter Wallace I had to look twice just cant believe you have that profile picture
Dark surfer with the infinity sword and gems was a really good villain in superhero squad
Where was the original Captain Marvel's death. It impacted the entire Marvel Universe and was talked about for years..
It's pretty normal for marvel to fuck up their own comics and piss off fans
I understand from a business sense to want to capitalize on the popularity that the Phoenix Saga gave to Jean Grey. However, it seems they were only thinking in that one sense and not thinking about how it would impact the meaning of their stories.
Marvel's been giving their fans the finger quiet a lot lately.
you need to pay attention to comics. My favorite Marvel Superhero turning point? When Frank Castle lost his family and became the Punisher!
Pretty certain Captain America revealing he is a Hydra agent after like 60 years of publication was the best turning point.
It's CONFIRMED that the Captain America that said Hail Hydra is not Steve Rogers
here's my theory: I was watching a nerdsync vid and he said something along the lines of: "during the 50s while captain america was frozen in ice a more aggressive clone took over until the avengers de-frosted the real captain america" so I think that the aggressive one was the hydra cap the whole time
Oh wow I didn't know that. So how was not Steve Rogers? By the way im being sincere here not a sarcastic prick.
actually they did the hydra cap for his 75 year anniversary
good to know, when I heard that news I didn't even get mad, because i knew it was 100% bullshit. We have had decades of Captain America comics with his first person narration, he isn't a Hydra agent. He actually belives in personal responsibility and treating others fairly and good winning over evil.
At 3:24 - 3:27
Is that the same voice actor for Gaara????!!!!!! O.o
Because it sounds just like him... :)
Iceman needs to be off this list too. A publicity stunt that makes NO SENSE
hims being Biexual would have made more sense
Thats what saved him
What about Bucky surviving the explosion & becoming the Winter Soldier?
I would love to see the original voice recordings of the 90's X-men TAS preserved, the animation redrawn/improved and then re-released. That would be GREAT!!!
House of M was Marvel's way of dropping their less successful characters in favor of giving the popular ones in more light. I don't think anyone was fooled by this.
I personally think that the Spider-Man Gwen Stacy thing should be number one, because that was the turning point that started turning points in superhero comics. Before that we didn't have turning points in superhero comics.
Ice man turning gay is like James Bond turning gay, it makes no sense.
Well JB is implied to be bi if you've seen Skyfall
+Deebo Molina he was just saying that to put off the villain - almost like a joke
I don't believe the young X-Men bought into the present are the main timelines versions.
In my opinion Iceman is just swinging for the same team because marvel wants to be open to all sexuality's and races
Haven't read x-men since that issue. Bendis ruined the x-men
OMG I didn't even know Rogue did that. D: Like that's some serious shit right there. Damn man.
Apocolipse's encounter with Cable that let him access the Celestial's ship.
last time I was this early
Nick Fury had two eyes
Another one even though I won't expect it on the list is Silk finds her brother
Hadn't heard the iceman one :) congratz
Wait Kenny you're alive
Your supposed to be dead
Wait who killed Kenny because their bastards
+Super CartoonDork it was cartman
I'm really interested in that No More Mutants storyline what eventually happens anyways?
Peter Parker unmasking should be on there
Was that during Civil War, or did he do it at another time I'm not aware of?
It was ret-conned, so it doesn't count.
+Red Lantern Reviews it was during the Civil Wars story arc
Dcashman15 thnx I just didn't know if it was that or another time I'm unaware of
Or since that was retconned, maybe LITERALLY making a deal with the devil to give up his marriage to save his aunt's life should be on here
House of M and then the following Decimation were pretty good arcs.
Iceman a gay womanizer? That dosen't make alot a sense since most of his love interests were female. Bi Sexual maybe, but still gay. I don't get this.
Well allegorically it makes sense since the X-Men are representative of all minorities
Deebo Molina Yes, but it was never hinted or built up.
He buried his sexuality because being both gay and a mutant would suck. He kept it suppressed for so long that he as an adult believes he is straight and still dates women. Mind you his time displaced younger self is openly gay.
it makes so much sense. I just wish Jean minded her own damn business. It would have been so impactful If it came from the older iceman.
You know there are multiple verses right
Man Gwen's death in the Spider-Man movie made me tear buckets T^T
Do you notice that most of the Marvel turning points have to deal with the X-Men? Just a thought...
...Suddenly...Life has new meaning to me...There's the missing piece I guess, my ideology to recompense. Suddenly, that one cutaway gag in Family Guy makes seeeheeeennnnse...[Pats Iceman on the shoulder] She was right to walk away...
I agree with the choices, but ABSOLUTELY not the order they were in.
8:50 and that is why Wolverine will always be my favorite mutant.
What about Captain America actually being a hydra agent the whole time. Dammit, Marvel.
That one was just stupid.
SPOILER FOR Nº1
Actually, even though the House of M storyline ended with the incredible reduction of the mutant population, this was restored after the Avengers vs X-men event, again, by the Skarlet witch (with the aid of Hope Summers). I don't know much about it afterwards and before the reboot Marvel did with secret wars and battleworld, but they kinda undid the House of M ending.

"cyclops!!"
" i know how you feel about it wolverine but--"
*punch to the stomach"
"you know nothing little man!"
wolverine gives zero fucks
The Iceman one, shouldn't really count, since it's an alternate realities version of his younger self, that came out, not the actual one. :/
not an alternative reality version. it's actually his past self... anyway he later confronted the current 616 version of himself and he admitted it too (in Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 600)
Oh ok, I thought that it was an alternate past version.

*It's okay to be gay*
No it's not.
agreed
+Brobot 500 no it's not
it was always speculated he was gay.
The one with Gwen's death in the movie was so sad :(
That Thor one should be off this list. A publicity stunt.. Not a turning point. A disrespect to the character and history of Marvel comics
Well Aaron has esentially used his previous run to justify why thor is unworthy: Gorr is right. Still he took a clue out of bendis book and took his time, in fact, TOO MUCH TIME to explain it.

it would have been beter to make him Bisexual or Pnasexual to keep respect to his history and to see if he could have a relationship with a man while still respecting his previous romances
But it was Bendis. he could have AT LEAST make and attempt to show both icemen seen to be attratcted to both male and female during the runs of all new and uncanny, showing they are bi por pan but he went the easier route and sayin just because your past self is gay you are gay too, when it actually showed the past X men are completely different but similar people form the present x men
I really miss spectacular spider man right now 😢...dame you disney for canceling the show 😡
2:10 I just think Bendis had no desire for X-titles so he threw that in as a F*** up of status quo. I know actual gay guys from comic cons who found this stupid & an unnecessary turn.
Great comment. Bendis just wanted to create some "Scandal" before leaving the X-Men titles. Stupid Retcon is just stupid.
Spider-Man ONE MORE DAY.
not only is it a turning point for the comics but spidy fans too
Why do they do this to comics just makes me not want to read them.
How else do you keep some of these 50+ year old characters interesting with no dramatic changes
yea, because there are no big female super heros in marvel, or diverse heros, there are tons
do top 10 MT EDEN songs
ice man is not gay.
I love how X-men are all over this count down, i hope Marvel takes notes and stop ill treating the Mutants
the no mutant thing was total bs tho
When iron man take off his armor he's Tony Stark, when Thor rid his hammer he's Thor
Superman death should've been on here.
marvel dude
lol
Dumbass
African Goku Its just a joke man don't get so triggeerd...
Damn these are some great Marvel turning points
Thought #1 would be jason todd dead
That's DC not Marvel idiot. Learn your shit.
+Toe Cutter bahaha 😂😂
Magneto was Quick Sliver & Sarlet Watch's real father. He recruited them and posed as a father figure.
they ruined iceman
"Number 1: Batman- Robin's Death" Honestly what I expected of WatchMojo.
Wait so its true? Mutants practically dont exist anymore in the marvel universe?
Inhumans are kind of the replacement
Yes, they are pretty much going extinct.
+Bryce P-Stevenson hmmm. Anyone know why Marvel took that approach?
Fox!
+1q2w3e4r5t6y7u8i0p9o they don't own the movie rights to the x-men so they just killed them off in the comics
Wolverine calling cyclops "little man" is funny.
Toby was mch better as spiderman then whoever that dude is.
he was Peter Parker. someone else wore the suit.
except when his mask was torn
But Tom Holland beat them both!
Brandon Lorenzo so? That doesn't change my love for him.
N7Infinity hah. No.
For everything that Amazing Spider-man 2 did wrong, they did the Gwen Stacy death right.
I have to know what Fury whispered in Thor's ear to make him unworthy of Mjolir! Also, there is a rumor the next X men movie could be the Dark Phoenix story....I suggest a two parter for that one.
"Gorr was Right" If you have no fucking idea of who Gorr is check CHECK Thor: God of Thunder run (Aaron's 1° run with Thor) to see who he is
Mjolnir*
I never knew Scarlet Witch did that- :o
