Hey Chris. I've been following this campaign extensively and I would like to clarify some of the stuff you talked about. So the Avatars are not only used in the solo mode. You can use them during any multiplayer games to add more chaos to the game which can be a good way to fix lower players count game. As for the Constructed format, I think it's such a cool game variant. There is enough restriction in the way you can create your mage that I don't feel like it's going to be too much. I feel like this mode will be better suited for players that have played a couple games before and that just want to try different builds. When creating your mage, unless you use some of your experiences towards that talent that let you use more, you are restricted to only use 2 schools of magic (in the normal format, you start with 1 school but you have access to 6 schools). Also when building your personal library, you only need to select 12 spells overall because you have to pick the 3 cards of the spells you selected. Thus your library and your grimoire will be a mixed of these 36 spells that contains only 12 different spells. I also think that this game variant could be used in tournament (if any are hosted). While creating everyone mage, the mages and schools could be drafted by the players around the table. And finally, as for the value proposition, I think getting the pledge + the apocalypse expansion is probably where the best value is if you want a little more variability. It is true that owner of BRW probably don't need Rebirth, but for someone who would like more content of BRW, I would probably get the core pledge + apocalypse expansion and be done with it. Thanks for the video as always ;)
As someone who wants this kind of game but doesn't have the original game, I have decided to go for the Rebirth. My thinking is that it is very similar to the original, but it will hopefully hone the mechanics, rule book and translation (errors were apparently present int he original) to perfection. I totally get what you are saying about the schools of magic being more... unusual in this one (the same goes for the evocations), but they are still cool. Plus I have watched 1-2 comparison video, and it seems like even at this stage they have fixed a few gripes people had with the original game. So having to choose between a slightly less cool (to me) miniatures and spells (so essentially just the IP) and more developed rules/mechanics/components, I have decided to go for the latter. I'm also glad that you have confirmed my impression - the core (+SGs) is the best deal, so this is what I got + the cheap Jukas expansion. I would love having Apocalypse for some sort of co-op option, where you fight a common opponent (the 4 horsemen), but not as playable mages, so will pass. If the game does get played a lot, I will get the Forge (cool miniatures) or the 5-6 player expansion once they hit retail.
My group loves the original game. It gets chosen as a party game more than anything. Get 6 guys together and beat the shit out of each other. Yes it takes awhile but never understood why people complain about game length. The game is there to bring friends and family together. The longer we have fun the better. Game does really shine with a larger player count. Would never play with less than 5.
First campaign backer here. Is BRW fun? Yes. Do I need more? Not really. With the Sator box content and the amount of times I've actually gotten this to the table I still have a ton of stuff to get through including painting the minis. So ... am I backing Rebirth? No. Is it a game I'd recommend backing? Sure. As long as you're aware of Ludus Magnus and their track record and are willing to deal with their idiosyncrasies.
For someone who is new to BRW, Would you recommend I back Rebirth or should I just go with the retail version of the original - since there seem to be more magic school sets in BRW than BRWR, and the Rebirth campaign seems comparatively expensive for what you are getting? Are all of those magic school card sets included in the retail version? Thanks.
@@JJ_TheGreat There are only six basic magic schools (with forgotten making a seventh) in the retail version and four minis for the four mages. All other minis are an optional buy and you won't have access to the Sator box contents. Retail vs KS for me would be depend on the size of your game library and how often you get to play games. Something fun and a bit different (and if you don't mind a base version) than retail should suffice. If your collection is small and you play the heck out of all the games you have then the new Rebirth campaign could be a better option.

agree with that last comment. going in now would be the ideal situation from that standpoint
I have been looking forward for this a long time as I didn't go in on the first one. The fact that I'm already backing Nova Aetas Renaissance that has a lot of cross-compatible characters makes this an easy back. Now, do I need an all-in? Probably not. Some of the expansions can be used with NAR as well, so I will probably get them along with the core game.
Still in atm, but will most likely drop out in last 24h, just don't want to rob myself of the early bird if the end up ending something amazing that significatly bumps up the value (which I highly doubt). As you said, it's just priced about 25 - 30 $ too high. Value seems off, not just compared to the (amazingly priced) 2018 campaign, but to more recent camaigns that had to deal with Covid, too. Especially with the question marks about the stream lining of the game and LMS themselves, I just think I can justify going in on this. It's just a shame because free-for-all skirmishers are kinda rare. Got a ton of 1v1 or 2v2 ones, but not free for all really...

I know! we’re definitely on the same page thought wise, mine are pretty much exactly in this same train of thought
Well for what is worth I backed both fully. I'm hoping they can sell us a new container for the "stand alone" Sator box content that matches the other boxes. IE remove the replacement parts from the Sator box, measure what remains and sell us an artistic box to hold its remaining contents. I'm really not wanting to see another shipping box used for extra stuff again... Stop the mix of fancy boxes and shipping boxes for extras.

I have no idea but multi box shipping is becoming so common nowadays and that combined with the pandemic shipping issues is just going to make things that much more…
Strategic, Mage vs Mage: Play Mage Wars Arena instead :) It has no minis, just excellent gameplay. Sort of like the 'Constructed' mode they are selling here and for a killer price at your retail stores because it is an older game (pre-building your deck is not your thing, I get it, but man it is so random and chaotic otherwise). I play Arena but if you want to play something more akin to Magic you could go for the Academy version (which can later be integrated into Arena if you decide to play the big game).
Personally I am dropping my pledge, I've been watching a series of vids and yours is the last one that convinced me. I do not need more BRW and truly it is not a great game. For its length it lacks strategy and has way too much luck. I'll probably end up selling my Sator box after a few plays, so best save my pennies for the heavy hitters coming in 2022. I am at a point in my gaming life where huge piles of pretty minis are no longer a temptation since I have piles of pretty minis everywhere in my house.
I bought this game on funagain then went and bought the Sator box. 2 weeks later this got announced. I know I'm a hypocrite as I am currently backing and probably will continue to, but man they are so full of it. "This is a stand alone expansion" It feels like a 2.0. "No. Not a 2.0, even though the card layout and icons have changed." You sure? "Absolutely. Oh by the way we're selling a 5-6 player expansion and an expansion for the expansion call apocalypse." Just feels shady. The other odd thing about apocalypse is that I'm not sure how it is any different . You can make a custom mage now. you don't need this. The mage personal spells are okay at best and you already build your deck so I'm not sure why you wouldn't just do it in this without this expansion expansion.
It indeed seems pretty stupid that they space major expansions like that. If gorseman were revealed at the beginning, the initial rysh might be highier, and the last expansion will be released on monday, what is the point? Reducing number of updates?

I mean I know campaigns want to “pace” things but we’ve seen enough from campaigns that have been more successful that don’t need to do it

welcome! thanks for further explanations!
They really should just hire Paul Grogan who seems to be competent at designing rule books.
agreed!

This! But I'm a sucker so I'm cautiously all in... Lol

32:42 What about Wiz-War? Would that be an alternate option?
as a much more scaled down version
This game looks good. Great looking minis. Never played the first. But $200+ ...think I'm gonna pass on this one.
Love the breakdown vid!
Fair enough! thanks!

No. LMS is the studio is a dumpster fire company. They seem to be lucky in that no one remembers their screwups or something.
