I own and enjoy Black Rose Wars. But it is also one of the most frustrating games in my collection and, because of that, it is hard to convince my friends to play it. Games take a long time to set up and play, but the bigger problem is that games seize up a couple of times because of ambiguous rules, poorly worded and inconsistent cards and outright errors. These delays are usually 20 minutes (but often more) of downtime that just isn't fun. We try to use a 'just agree on an interpretation and move on' but that is problematic because of the programming nature of gameplay. You have to set up and spring your trap/make your play before finding out whether the table agrees that it works the way you hope. It creates extremely feel-bad situations. The game is still fun, but it gets in its own way A LOT. I am not backing Rebirth.
You need to learn the game better to run it better. There are indeed lots of weird interactions but there are loads of details online about how to deal with it all, and good FAQ threads from the designers
I would like to say, after the Kickstarter has passed, I ABSOLUTELY pledged. I own BRW and you never seemed to discuss stretch goals? My question is simply ... why not? Have you experienced the SATOR box? WAY more actual game play. I am talking chunky and deep game play enhancements. To this day, I still consider BRW one of my easiest games to pick up and learn and also one of my favorite. That combination is killer.
5: LMS has lots of projects and always delivers, no problems here 4: BRW had issues: so what, its fun as heck and supremely replayable 3: Its the same game: Yeah, we know, thats why we want it. Its more stuff for a game we love 2: High entry point: not really, especially compared to all other big box KS games 1: Campaign bad: Nobody plays this for a campaign, they just added it to add it. Didnt have to even add it. Conclusion: None of your reason dissuade anyone who actually likes BRW
Your final point absolutely nailed it. I backed the original BRW. The value and amount of SG content was outstanding, but there were delays, and we were asked to pay more postage to get our stuff. I feel like LMS are completely ignoring us original backers and everything we went through with them, by producing a tweaked, arguably better version of the same game, and not offering any kind of upgrade pack to keep our version up to date. Instead I feel like I am left with an inferior version of the game (that I really like by the way) with no way to improve this other than to buy the whole thing all over again. No thanks, LMS.

I love the idea of this game because deckbuilding with different schools of magic is a cool concept. The thing that caused me to cancel my pledge though is that the 5th and 6th player expansion was an add on. For the price they’re charging for the game it should really be included. I’m gonna wait for the game to come out and then maybe pick it up at retail if it has good reviews.
Yeah pretty legit - have you played the first one? They really do feel so similar to me that I feel you'd get pretty much the same experience from BRW.
@@RoomandBoardReviews I decided to wait on it in case rebirth fixes some problems the original game had. If rebirth takes awhile to release and is very expensive in retail then I’ll probably just get the original
Honestly, I have no original game. Played it on tabletop simulator and really loved it. If this one is going to be next, improved iteration then I'd rather have the new version than the old one. The money is kind of issue, but not that big, because the original retail version has no addons or sgs.
Hey thanks for the video, it was great. I am right there with you on Ludis Magnus. I backed Dungeonology when i first got into Kickstarter. The components are beautiful but the game is nothing special, the rulebook is lacking, they have been asking for more money for shipping which was not very well explained or communicated, and we are stil waiting for the second wave 2. First wave came in December 2019. All of this has left a bad taste for the company. Not rushing to buy any more of their games.
Geez that's brutal. I know the extra shipping was hard on a lot of companies, but there's a way to do it openly. I thought there was something along those lines that Ludus Magnus had to do, but I couldn't find it. Thanks for pointing it out.
My main draw-in is that it is a miniature free-for-all for multiple players. I got a ton of this type of game for 2 players, or maybe for 4 playing 2 vs. 2, honestly too much of those, but a free for all is kinda rare in the market. Also, I like deck-building. Am a bit concerned about the lack of control in the building-part, though. Totally with you on the price point, seems excessive for what is there. And I wouldn't really want more stuff, instead I would just like to take what is there and pay less, but that option is off the table I guess... In for now to hold the EB, but probably will drop out, especially with the Mythic Battles Ragnarok being open waiting to be filled out and me having to get the Tanares Adventures stuff of the Tanares RPG campaign since I hate proxying minis... Grave problems, I know. :D
Yeah, if that free for all aspect is rare, and I can't think of too many miniatures games that are a free for all - like my mind goes to Rising Sun or Blood Rage in terms of that battling every man for themselves, but that's closer to war tactics rather than running around and being able to attack every turn. Haha, hey if you like the minis for Tanares, might as well. I'm actually getting happier and happier that I got the Etherfields creature pack add-on, even though they add not a lot to the game, them being in their own box means I won't mind proxying them for any other games that use their minis infrequently. I guess it depends on how much you're going to play it though - I assume the Tanaras RPG will take a while that it'll feel worth it to have the actual ones. Or it's a good lie to tell oneself anyway :D
Really great video man! I just found you yesterday and really appreciate your point of view and clarity on this board game. Thank you for convincing me not to pre-order this game, looked amazing at first glance but the randomness in the deck and the rule book issues kinda put me off.
Thank you for those reasons! You make some legitimate points regarding LMS and their campaign. I think I will watch a video to see whether this is a game I think I would enjoy, as well as whether I think I will be able to get to the table. Otherwise, I will look into Epic Spell Wars (thank you for the recommendation) or Wiz-War. I will reply back here once I end up making my decision as to whether I will be keeping my Early Bird pledge or not.
@@RoomandBoardReviews Well, I just wanted to let you know that I canceled my pledge, not because I am not excited about the game, it sounds cool and I definitely want to play it sometime, but for a few reasons: 1) I can wait for retail (I can even buy the older version for cheaper... I could even late pledge if I change my mind). 2) I already have a lot of un-played games on my shelf, such as: Mage Knight and Dwellings Of Eldervale. The rulebook is long for this one - and so it would take me a while before I get to getting it to the table. 3) I don't really have the group/enough people to play heavier games with. I could play it at Game Night, but: A) I haven't gone in ages and B) I would still need to find people to play it with there. 4) I have a lot of outstanding PMs for other games which I have backed. 5) Also, there are all the other reasons you mentioned in this video.
@@JJ_TheGreat All of that sounds so legit, and I'm happy you're happy with your decision :) I think there will definitely be enough opportunities to get it down the line once you've gone through all those other ones in 2040 ;) That's how I feel with all the outstanding pledge managers I've got going on anyway haha, it's a good problem to have.
I haven't looked too much into it as of yet, but just judging by the unboxing that are going around, it really looks like the amount of stuff you got for that 79 dollar pledge seems like a pretty good amount if you're into the narrative story elements. Anytime something has a 1-2 player count, it kind of throws me off. I think I immediately think "oh this is for sure a solo game that can be played at 2" and I don't think about it too much after that because I'm not that big of a solo player.
I backed for the early bird and am using the campaign time to decide if I really want it. I have the original, but have only played once since lockdowns killed my gaming group I wanted the game for. The avatars for solo mode are probably the most appealing thing about rebirth beyond more cool minis. However I'm probably going to cancel. Tanares RPG and Limbo Eternal War are much more compelling. I keep holding out for some kind of new storage solution for BRW but it appears that won't be part of this new campaign. Maybe after Essen they teased.
Yeah it looked the storage for BRW wasn't great. I'm always afraid I'll forget to cancel my pledge for those sorts of Early Bird bonuses, especially if I'm looking into a bunch of kickstarters and forget the day. That's exactly the right move though if you can remember.
Loved your Video and thanks for this. I am new to BRWs: rebirth since I am new to the universe and not played the previous ones. Sticking to the core pledge only and will get the addons after the whole campaign is fulfilled as it could be cheaper.
Excellent video. I bought the retail base game used for 40 bucks and enjoy it. Granted, I house ruled several aspects of the game by removing confusing quests and what I considered useless spells to better streamline the game. I also added slight asymmetrical powers to the mages. Obviously the game is fun but flawed. I considered trying to get the Sator Box and the evocation minis to increase the mage count and replayability, but unfortunately it turns out it's actually cheaper to just back BRWR.
I have no hate for Black Rose Wars Rebirth but it just rubs me the wrong way that something like this comes out so soon after the first one. A gigantic box that supposedly very similar but slightly better version of the first - more streamlined, more player friendly. The idea that someone who backed the first game should also back this one because it's not a remake / update but a sequel feels kind of greedy.
I am leaning towards the Rebirth rather than the original one for the very reason you mentioned - it's ALMOST a reprint, so I am hoping the translation/misprints/rulebook will be improved.
I have everything from original black rose wars unfortunately I just could not get on board this time around simply because I haven't even gotten through the sator box or inferno or chronos lol! My absolute favorite game! I love the school's of magic. I do play with the void alot! Lms is an awesome company I love the quality of all their games! I would say extremely close to AR quality enough that I do tend to trust their products!
You're wrong about the asymetry. In the original BRW each mage board had 2 sides. 1. was different only by the spells on hand count and hitpoints. 2. was a lot more to elaborate: different movement and attack values, different effects like drawing stuff etc. In BRW:R they yet to announce the new system to make it even more diversified.
I haven't gotten a chance to look into it too too much yet, but I'm happy for them that they've hit their funding goal out of the gate, looks like they won't have to cancel it again. My initial gut says it's too pricey for me, but I like that they're offering the upgrade pack for previous backers. I think there's been a lot of buzz around it because of their push for fan made videos, to help get the word out, and the fans seems really passionate about making it a success which is always nice to see, but haven't had a chance to look into the gameplay all that much yet.
It's getting hard to justify adding another one in the fantasy/dark dungeon crawl (or dungeon crawl in general) genre to my collection when it seems like any given time Kickstarter/Gamefound has two or three in open campaign/late pledge. Kind of reminds me of the early 2000s when every other video game was a WWII FPS. I love the genre, but how many different sets of rules do I need to learn in order to fill a certain gaming itch? I've got Bardsung, Tiny Epic Dungeons, Hexplore It, Lavon Rising, and Stormsunder pledged. Jaws of the Lion, Imperial Assault, and Mage Knight in my collection. I really don't need another, especially since I held out on Chronical of Drunagor! (That was a tough one)
Haha, yeah that genre is inundated with great titles. Although to be fair, I don't see this as really that much of a dungeon crawl, more a slinging spell fest of who can beat up their opponents the best.
@@RoomandBoardReviews yeah, good point. I think the Lazy Squire games also fall under that category too. More of a skirmish game. I like to call those beat 'em ups "arcade skirmishes".
Yeah.. fine, the Kickstarter was a mess... and yeah, I am still pissed, that the small sleeves were not enough to sleeve all cards. But in the end I got everything delivered... and wow... I really love this game!!! It is kinda big and therefore does not hit the table that often. But the plays I had were an absolute blast. Awesome miniatures, cool and funny gameplay beautiful art! Casting fireballs, summon skeletons, manipulate time, forge artifacts... Sure... there are a lot of things to nitpick, the rulebook, better integration of the expansions, fewer Typ0s, ugly Sator box etc.. But this is definitely in my top ten and will stay there for quite some time. I am backing BRW Rebirth, and as long as they deliver I am sure I will not regret that decision. :)
Perfect analysis. Unfortunately Ks is much more a Store now. I was on the fence of buying the original BRW, but with all the issues i'd preferred backing the new game. I'm sure if that not satisfies me, it will hold his value and will be easy to resell when the hype or the not bakers return. Good video!
This is an easy no for me. It would never get played with my group. We don't really like direct competitive vs games. 😆 I will say that a miniature only pledge would be tempting, buuut I have Nova Aetus Renaissance coming so that should scratch that itch.
One gets the feeling that LMS use the sales from new projects to fund their existing projects. I've backed Nova Aetas Renaissance and still waiting for it, despite the fact they originally said everything was completed and ready to go to the manufacturers/printers, during the campaign. There are still people waiting for their Dungeonology games too... it's not a good look.
I have to admit that I am REALLY drawn in by the look of the game. The box, the components, the minis, the cards, all of it. It just LOOKS sooooo much better than BRW that my finger is itching to engage my mouse's money suction feature. But I just can't do it. The gameplay just looks too messy for me to want to learn it and, more importantly, teach it so that it gets played. If I'm going to take the plunge on this system I'm figuring it's better to do it with the original at the much cheaper price point. It may not look as fancy on my shelf, but if it's not fun to play it won't stay on my shelf anyway. But still, Gramigna.....
I mean, Gramigna..... But I think that's exactly it though with the messy system, it seems like you really need to invest multiple plays before it starts clicking and everyone can be competitive with it.
@@RoomandBoardReviews The funny thing is I am saying all that after buying (and playing) On Mars. Then again, maybe On Mars is the reason I'm saying it.
BRW i s 8/10 for me. What i love: - number of schools (core+SG) - deckbuilding - minis - hexagonal lodge board with additional rooms from SG - easy rules to lern What I hate: - poor wording on cards with no kaywords - rulebook and spell manual are deeply f*uked and thay never send backers 100% corect rulebook - design of sator box which is huge and poorly design. And yes I backed Rebirth.
I went all in on the first KS and am going all in on this one as well. I think it's a fantastic game. I love the variety and replayability. A lot of those rules issues and translation issues are minor and easy to overcome so I was never turned off by them as so many people were. I feel a lot of the complaints weren't so much that it made the game hard to play, as it was annoyance that it was an unpolished product. So despite all the issues, I think its a fantastic game that is super fun and engaging that is well worth the price.
@@RoomandBoardReviews I expect so. In a lot of ways they learned from their mistakes as far as cosmetic items and I see this version being a lot more crisp and user-friendly.
While I admire your effort, the first few reasons you have stated come across as someone who hasn't played the original game, which aren't going to be reasons for fans of the original not to back it. Rebirth is basically a standalone expansion, so for previous owners it's more of whether they want more content or not. While I agree the pricing model is a bit greedy but then most Kickstarters nowadays are comparable in one way or another, however these last two reasons (price and campaign model) are valid reasons for those new to BRW not to back it. Previous backers who want more content will just ignore these last two reasons 🤣.
Haha, that's completely legit - definitely the last two if you know the system and like it, won't have any impact on you. And for sure, I haven't, I was just compiling the sentiments that I saw around various places - or rather from those who the game didn't knock it out of the park for. For me though I wouldn't opt for the standalone expansion when that general sentiment is that the first one gives you so much content and I could get it at the cheaper price.
He right. I have epic spell wars and have lot of fun with that already and cheaper with all the expansions than this. I don't need something more complicated that my party won't really enjoy. And I backed arydia already so this one is a nope for me dawg.
sorry, can i confirm... at 13:35 you've said you've not played either game, yet you're complaining about it and giving reasons not to back it? was interested in the video until that point. how can you critique a game you've not played? i've just finished playing BRW at a games expo and it was pretty damn awesome, granted, only a demo...but was looking for content for the latest game to see if i should get it.
Nice, well I hope you enjoy it if you do. I do have a critique to your comment though, I wouldn't categorize it as complaining, more devil's advocating. I'm using this as an example of how one can critique something even though I didn't write the comment myself. (It's half snarky, not full snark) ;) But I try to treat this series as a conglomerate of information. I've read through both rulebooks, fully investigated the gameplay through playthroughs, and have a pretty good grasp of how something will work by looking at the inner workings of it and seeing it in action. If I understand a Ferrari's engine and how its built, and then I see someone driving it, and hear multiple anecdotal information, I think I could get a pretty good picture of what a Ferrari is, even having not driven it, and could convey that research and information to people effectively, which is what I do with this series. When I've played the game, it certainly takes less time on that research front, but I've found in retrospect I'm usually pretty bang on with my assessments. There are the odd time I'll be wrong and something won't jive with me as I expect it to, but from a consumer perspective that will happen, just as your trusted reviewer will tell you its great, and then not end up being great for you. But rest assured these will always be thoroughly researched so I'm hypothesizing usual actual information instead of just spouting nonsense. I retain the right TO spout nonsense, but usually said nonsense won't be about the game :)

Yeah it looked the storage for BRW wasn't great. I'm always afraid I'll forget to cancel my pledge for those sorts of Early Bird bonuses, especially if I'm looking into a bunch of kickstarters and forget the day. That's exactly the right move though if you can remember.
This video retroactively reassured me that I made the right choice backing Arydia
I'm glad. Holy heck am I pumped for that game.
Loved your Video and thanks for this. I am new to BRWs: rebirth since I am new to the universe and not played the previous ones. Sticking to the core pledge only and will get the addons after the whole campaign is fulfilled as it could be cheaper.
Yeah fair point, there might be a sale down the line and the core pledge should be more than enough content to last you for a long while
Excellent video.
40 bucks for the retail edition sounds exactly the price I'd like to pay, good find!
Yeah 100% agree here.
I am leaning towards the Rebirth rather than the original one for the very reason you mentioned - it's ALMOST a reprint, so I am hoping the translation/misprints/rulebook will be improved.
Yeah I think that's legit, if you want one of them, and they're about the same price, I would definitely go with Rebirth.
@@RoomandBoardReviews thanks a lot
I just have one question. Where's Megan Bacon???
That's great to hear, I hope they announce something similar!
curious about your thoughts on limbo 1.5
That's awesome to hear, glad you're loving it!
19:38 ...Or even a $5 pledge (if they didn’t want to do a $1 pledge)
I'm a simple guy. I see a Room & Board video... ahhh, you know the rest.
18:30 What about Wiz-War?
Perfect analysis. Unfortunately Ks is much more a Store now. I was on the fence of buying the original BRW, but with all the issues i'd preferred backing the new game. I'm sure if that not satisfies me, it will hold his value and will be easy to resell when the hype or the not bakers return.
Good video!
Thanks so much, I appreciate it. It does seem like the other one has held it's value, so you'll probably be able to get 80-90% back for sure.
Thanks this was helpful in deciding whether to keep my pledge of not.
This is an easy no for me. It would never get played with my group. We don't really like direct competitive vs games. 😆 I will say that a miniature only pledge would be tempting, buuut I have Nova Aetus Renaissance coming so that should scratch that itch.
Yeah, it definitely should, really like the minis on that one too :)
BRWR is BRW 1.5. Will wait to see the end for all the stuff cause the price is high for a second edition of a 726th BGG ranking
100% - this is exactly it right here.
Fair look.
My intention as well! They just try to earn a lot of money out of the hype :P
I'm still waiting on wave 2 of Dungeonology
I'd call Rebirth a next iteration to original BRW, there are improved mechanics, more of them in general. And the content is also deluxified a bit.
Definitely a great way to describe it.
@@foodflights1408 Haha, well then you've got enough crunchy to subject your friends to for a while :)
@@RoomandBoardReviews A more truer thing could not be uttered.
BRW i s 8/10 for me.
What i love:
- number of schools (core+SG)
- deckbuilding
- minis
- hexagonal lodge board with additional rooms from SG
- easy rules to lern
What I hate:
- poor wording on cards with no kaywords
- rulebook and spell manual are deeply f*uked and thay never send backers 100% corect rulebook
- design of sator box which is huge and poorly design.
And yes I backed Rebirth.
Nice, great breakdown, hope you love Rebirth even more!
@@RoomandBoardReviews in fact I only want minis, mages and spells. But I must backed Rebirth, there is no other way :(
I appreciate these videos, I wasn't interested, and I continue to not be, all valid points
My reason, I've got the first game and haven't played it.
That's a pretty dang good reason.
That's awesome to hear, I hope you love this version even more :)
@@RoomandBoardReviews I expect so. In a lot of ways they learned from their mistakes as far as cosmetic items and I see this version being a lot more crisp and user-friendly.
Find a friend a give it a shot at playing a match! You would have changed your mind and backed it ^__^
Backed it because of minis and because I have 1st game - idk why I do this, maybe I need medicine to stop buying games )))
Haha, hey if you love the first one enough to do it again, they must be doing something right! Hope you love it :)
@@RoomandBoardReviews Did not have a chance to play the 1st one (
@@boardgamejunkie Ahhh, I see! Well good thing they've got one going now for you then!
*insert Randy gif here* haha
sorry, can i confirm... at 13:35 you've said you've not played either game, yet you're complaining about it and giving reasons not to back it? was interested in the video until that point.
how can you critique a game you've not played?
i've just finished playing BRW at a games expo and it was pretty damn awesome, granted, only a demo...but was looking for content for the latest game to see if i should get it.
Nice, well I hope you enjoy it if you do. I do have a critique to your comment though, I wouldn't categorize it as complaining, more devil's advocating. I'm using this as an example of how one can critique something even though I didn't write the comment myself. (It's half snarky, not full snark) ;)
But I try to treat this series as a conglomerate of information.
My wallet thanks you
Wait, you muricans get your paychecks on a 2 week basis?
I'm not backing it.
Ouch dude. Lookin pretty rough in this video... get some sleep
Negative videos to gain views is really lame.
I agree, good thing that isn't what this is!
Ohhh video about nothing. Nice.
Hey it worked for Seinfeld!
