Alright! Been waiting for the L30 build. I have an L30 with the same 520 heads in my C1500. It runs good. Not as much torque as a 5.7 but I'm interested in seeing what they can do. I know the heads don't see much gains past .500" lift but maybe it can get it done with more duration, tight LSA, and compression. Excited to see what you can get out of it👍
Oh hey a vortec 305. Those things are pretty underrated by the general community. They just see 305 and immediately turn their noses. But a cam and intake will make those run way better people expect. As good or even better than the old school 302/327/350s in stock trim, depending on the cam/intake.
Send that cam to Delta cams for a custom re-grind. They say it's about half the price of a new cam because you are not buying a new core and you get to pick the specs. win-win. ...oh and keep the big block stuff coming too.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the oil wasn't changed very often. And, as a result... cam bearings wore, low oil pressure + dirty oil started a chain reaction that killed the rod and main bearings. I'm curious as to what you'll be using for parts: cam & pistons. Hopefully flat tops, and have you considered one of Summits hyd rollers? Fairly budget friendly and Brian Nutter is a wiz with cam design. Either way, looks like a great winter project. I broke into the 12s with my truck a few weeks ago and hurt the posi in the process. Just got done fixing it today over the long weekend. Hopefully I'll get back out to the track one more time before Christmas. (The track closes for about 3 weeks down here, right before Christmas and reopens after new year's)
I’d say that is a accurate assumption on why there was bearing failure. And yes gonna be new parts build but still on a budget. It will be getting a summit cam forsure!
Channels like these are so underrated cause it’s such a working man’s vibe not TH-cam money vibe
We put 520 pocket ported heads on a bored 283, 246@050 .500 lift. Thing was absolute screamer, 7000 shift points!
Can’t wait to see this build. Looks like you got this engine just in time, by the looks of the bearings, not much life was left.
I got one of those in my 1500. I put a Holley Vacuum secondary carb on it, RamJet cam, and headers. It runs good for what it is.
I just put one together with flat tops and a L98 cam. With a 5 speed into a half ton truck. It's great.
I have a little twin turbo tpi 305 from a firebird. It's a blast

Such an interesting and underrated channel.
I really enjoy this project and your videos.
Keep up the good work, brother!

I’m just getting ready to rebuild the motor in my trans am I’m also hoping it isn’t already 30 over

What happened to the 400 you had for it?
Still have the 400 for it, just wanna play around with different 305 combinations before I go straight to a 400.
I say 3.75 stroke crank and with a .030 overbore for a 331!
I second that.
Completely defeating the purpose of even bothering with a 305... 🤨
@02autogt , yeah but to anyone just running the casting number or the suffix code it is just a 305
