I have listened to his recordings for 20 years since I belatedly discovered him . Was instantly hooked on his voice and superb guitar playing . Just a legendary singer songwriter who will never be forgotten.
''to be a performing artist, you’ve got to have a very soft interior and a very tough exterior. you've got to remain totally vulnerable inside, but to be able to cope with rejection on the outside.'' Gabrielle Drake
It was everything, everything was unique about his music, the open tuning and hand picking technique, his melodies, strangely poetic lyrics, his voice ...that velvety whisper quality, holding notes on the consonant of words rather than the vowel. Nick was a singular breed.
One and only Nick Drake, sadly he left feeling "rejected" but he never knew he is one of greatest musician in history and his music is evergreen forever! It doesnt matter when we get to know Nick Drake, a thousand year later? They will be stunt , and will admire and accept this extraordinary talented musician and vocalist!
Nick is heartbreaking through'n through, from his whole story up to his songs with heart blowing techniques.... I think bigger success wouldn't be a solution for him. Sometimes I feel like his reincarnation, sounds stupid, but isn't funny I can tell.... He died in the year I was born and of course I'm way to late to have a chance to know him in realtime... But I'm thankful for find to his music - during listen at , I miss that dude roughly. R.i.P Nick 💝🌹😪🎼👏🏅🤞🍀🐞💋💋💋🌻🌻☮....
Nick Drake's fame and reputation grew slowly, very slowly. it was almost all by word of mouth - a copy of Five Leaves Left or Bryter Later bought, listened to, and then shared with or lent to a friend or two; his following increased by ones and twos, because he would not or could not endure the gruelling torment of touring and playing to large (or even moderately-sized) audiences. Joe Boyd did him no favours there, by booking him in to (one famous example) a miners' club, and to play in big venues where he felt intimidated. He should have been sent out round the folk circuit, with small and friendly audiences. Even a session for John Peel wasn't enough to kick-start his musical career, and until his death he always felt under-appreciated. If only he had waited a few years .... I remember the news of his death, but knew little about him then. I was introduced to his music about three or four years after he died by a friend, and bought his first two LP's shortly afterwards. Thus his fan base grew, oh so slowly, but it grew. At Lancaster University I was unwisely allowed to be one of the campus DJs for a year, and used the opportunity to play Nick Drake to a generation of students who had never heard of him. And so he gained a few more fans ... the process gained momentum, increasingly, as time went on. If only Nick had persevered he would have got the recognition he craved.
It's been speculated that TH-cam could have been his arena, regarding getting people aware of his music. What do you reckon? And - damn it - good on you for playing ND to the new and young students!
Thank you for posting this. As I live in America, we are not lucky enough to have such quality programs available. I urge anyone who can make it to the Annual Nick Drake Gathering held each July in Tanworth-in-Arden to attend if at all possible. It is a life changing experience. I was lucky enough to be invited to perform on 3 separate ocassions, and will always treasure the time. By all means Go !!
@@DjNikGnashers It happens every year, as per the documentary about him. Fans have been gathering in Tanworth every year for many years. You just head there and you'll find likeminded individuals that are there for the same reason. Small place, small population, not hard to find yourself in the right place 😊 Take it easy~
On some of the songs on Five Leaves Left, in particular, he sounds like a specter above the fray, already dead. The last songs he sounds alive but afraid as he prepares to board the train.
Yes he was a very talented singer /songwriter. I've known some very like him and still know one or two but not many as gifted. Doomed was mentioned here. Unfortunately that describes Nick Drake. It's all terribly sad. Depression is written all over ND. On his face and in his music. Obviously a very unhappy and depressed young man. Very sad indeed. All that is left is some haunted and mesmerising songs. Some people are just not built to go the distance and take the knocks. I imagine the depression was so bad he needed to escape for a while. Unfortunately the antidepressants he was taking are notoriously dangerous and don't actually help depression. They are certainly not suitable for Russian roulette. Not many meds are. It's too late now and he found out the hard way. As far as I know the meds he was taking are not recommended for depression these days because of the many dangerous side effects plus they didn't work. . Like I said he wrote and sang some wonderful songs. Alas, he can write no more. RIP Nick Drake.
In photos @ 6:48 & 7:27 Nick looks exactly like the tall mysterious figure walking through an English folk festival (away from camera) which is possibly the only recording of him on film as an adult - and I do mean exactly, right down to the clothes. Same lanky frame, same hair, same burgundy jacket too short at the sleeves for his long arms, huge hands dangling slightly effeminately away from his body, taller than everyone around. I'm sure it's him. th-cam.com/video/CZFnCdTCSXw/w-d-xo.html ps: the footage is clearer in the original source video which is a documentary called 'The Old Grey Whistle Test Story' (2007) which has unfortunately been taken down from TH-cam. pps: Nick is known to have attended a music festival at that time which is recorded in the 'Remembered For A While' book about him, and his sister Gabrielle even mentions the possible sighting.
that person in the footage is not nick, he was not in the area that day and both Joe Boyd and Gabrielle Drake have stated it is not him, and they would know.
Nick had the misfortune of living before the internet, where an introvert can easily gain notoriety by uploading videos, never having to play live or interact face to face. It’s no wonder his following grew with the onset of the digital age where we can access and share his body of work to new listeners. He was singing to the future all along and didn’t know it.
I thought I would find Nick's voice talking about his ideas but I've found gossip and assumptions instead. Leave the man alone and play his songs. He killed himself and it's nobody's business. It's always like this once someone commits suicide. Everybody has ideas about someone that they never new well. Disgusting. Vultures. Call a psychic to talk to him.
Jim Morrison was a drunken buffoon posing as a poet, as Lester Bangs would say. His only luck was that he was backed by three talented guys to make for a halfway descent band. He wouldn't even deserve to sniff the sweat off Nick Drake's dead balls.
@@helenmcintosh9880 First part: fair enough. Second part: uncalled for, since I wasn't attacking you personally and neither should you. You shouldn't make yourself feel better by making other people feel worse. I just think that Morrison's overrated, that's all.

The commentator makes a great point, there is nothing in Drake's music that ties it to any era. Its timeless.
I'd agree except for the production choices made for album #2
Absolutely ❤

Do you know if this event is still on, and where to find information ?

Very Special...How could he go so overlooked. His music should be played more. gone much too soon.
I agree he was an excellent guitarist, and he could sing he was just fucking great.
I read somewhere that basically no guitarist on earth could duplicate Nick Drake's guitar style.
Charles Black Im not surprised, he was an original mind.

Excellent thanks. wow, I remember his pretty sister from UFO, back in the seventies !
Thank you for getting this out so even more people can learn about and enjoy the excellent Nick Drake!!!:)
Thank you for uploading.
He is the Van Gough of music.

Very interesting!
May I just add that he was quite stunningly attractive.
animamia He was drop dead gorgeous
Yes, handsome with an almost baby face. He looked as gentle as his music sounded -at six foot three a gentle giant.
"beautifully doomed" probably the best way to describe his music
Well put.
Bloody criminal he was ignored in his lifetime
If he refused to play live (for whatever reason) then how was it possible to get his music to the public's attention? Not criminal just rather sad.

yes i will up load it later tomorrow
There was no need for embellishment on his albums with the production. Its almost a distraction. He is best served with just his guitar.
i bought that mojo i bought every mojo in the 90s
Was the album title 5 leaves left a prophetic message meaning 5 more years to go?
robert harding It was about his rizla pack, he liked to smoke a lot of dope. When your nearly out of papers you get one which says "5 leaves left"
Johnny Ross Thanks for that ! I cannot believe I never got it in the first place.LOL.
robert harding Aw , you're both right. Robert is the poetry , Johnny is the prose.
