    IMO, Hank Aaron is the All Time HR champ, and Roger Maris and Aaron Judge are the single season HR record holders. The 1990's records were a disgrace only made possible due to PEDs. A scar on the game.

      We all agree. Us of a certain age. Bonds, Clemens and Arod should never get into the HOF. Sosa and McGwire didn't even deserve to make the HOF with steroids. Hope future generations keep out the steroid users.

    Dan is totally on point as usual. The point needs to be made; MLB, and sports media in general are delusional about the role that they played in the steroid era. They took all the attention and saved the sport after the strike, a ton of interest and money was generated. Also, IT WAS FUN! PEDs were part of the game, those players should get into the HOF. Put Pete in too; gambling to a big part of the game now.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gehrig doesn't get near the love he deserves when talking about who was the greatest. He had 173 RBI batting behind Ruth the year Ruth hit 60.
      In his next to last season, 1938, he hit 29 homers and had a slash of .295/.410/.523/.932 and an OPS+ of 132. He was literally dying, his body breaking down, his muscles betraying him due to his, at the time, undiagnosed ALS. If his 1938 season isn't the single most impressive thing an athlete has ever accomplished, I don't know what is.

      And many pitchers started throwing 99 instead of 89 I don’t know why we only single out the hitters everyone was juicing. Also steroids were more commonly used for recovery than just adding power. And players are still using PEDs today just like they were back in the sixties.

      Stop. He's had the same build since before he was drafted. He's just a big guy. And his numbers aren't actually much of an outlier if you look at his 162/avg. He averages 49 per 162 played. Its not unusual or suspicious for a player, in a year they've played nearly every game, to exceed their avg by 11 or more. Its not like with the 90s when guys went from never having more than 20 or so then hitting 50. Its not like Bonds suddenly having a Renaissance in his late 30s. Making insinuations about cheating isn't fair. There is literally nothing to base suspicion on.

    • @standepain
      @standepain 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snerdterguson ...and? Kids are taking steroids in high school as well as college so of course he could have the same build. Most professional athletes take steroids anymore. It's just the name of the game if you want to be in the pros. People say..."well he passed the drug test" PED test are easy to pass anymore with all the blocker they have on the market and MLB has been called out by WADA for how bad there testing is. He averages 49 per 162....yes... and do you know who the only player is with more home runs per 162 games? Mark McGwire with 50 per 162. Maris still has the only real record.

  • @fudgets1
    @fudgets1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If PEDs weren't enforced than how was Bonds cheating? Regardless of how you feel about him and the rest of the "Steroid Era," I think it's unfair to penalize them for doing something that they were financially incentivized to do. Blame the owners and the commissioner!

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a cop lets you slide on a speeding ticket, how is speeding a traffic violation? It just is. Enforcement is irrelevant to whether or not someone violates a rule. And if you violate a rule in order to gain advantage you are by definition cheating.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do blame owners, mlb, the media for falling for it and the players for doing it. They're grown ass men. Them getting paid more because their cheating made them more valuable doesn't make their cheating ok or not their fault. Almost everyone was to blame except the players that didn't cheat and the fans and rare members of the media that saw the obvious as soon as Big Mac and Sammy started going off in 98. I was 17 years old and it was blatantly obvious to me those guys were cheating. Also, I've never been overly entertained by homers if there isn't some substance behind it. I'm more impressed by a guy who is an all around hitter. Its what I like about Judge. Yeah the homers are great, and his power is special, but he just does all the things you want a ball player to do. Picks his teammates up, takes accountability while passing the credit to his teammates. Turtles down the line, plays all out on defense and doesn't Bobby Abreu it near the wall. The guy was chasing Maris and taking close pitches late in games to draw a walk. He's a ballplayer. While McGwire was just a guy who cheated to be great at one thing. Bonds at least was an all time great without steroids, its a real shame he cheated later on and drew deserved scepticism about his numbers.

      I'd argue for Babe, Ted Williams, and Willie Mays, and I saw neither one play, I'm only 44. But history tells us these guys were truly amazing. Williams lost years in the war, but he could homer when he wanted, double when he needed to, and fool the pitcher to think he had a leg up on Williams. Babe was a world class hitter and pitcher, and Willie was freaking Willie. This is why baseball is still great. You can have these discussions where everyone is right, and nobody is right.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's zero reason to suspect him. There's no real jump from his averages here. His body hasn't gotten bigger. He isn't doing anything that surprising given what he's shown he's capable of. People act like its shocking that a guy who hit 52 as a rookie would get to 61 or more a few years later. He didn't go from a career high of 46 to 73 several seasons later in his late 30s.

    • @stingrey1571

      @@snerdterguson it isn’t just about numbers. McGwire was a home run slugger his entire career. Same with canseco. All i am saying is when the media assumed a player was clean. It always bit them in the ass.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stingrey1571 McGwire got massive in the late 90s and it was obvious he wasn’t on the level. I think him and canseco were always dirty. Biggest thing is you could tell by looking. Judge looks like he’s always looked. Like 6’7 280. He’s just a big guy. Always was a big guy. Palmeiro went from skinny to bulked out. Same with Sosa. McGwire wasn’t ever small, but his damn head grew, lol. I was stunned by all the people celebrating those guys in 98. So there was reason for suspicion, there name linked to it, sudden abnormal spike in stats. Let’s say judge hits 3 more and has 64. That’s just 12 more than he had his rookie year. After he hit 52 that year, did you not think, this kid could break the record? He was a rookie doing that. It would have been a let down if he never topped that year. As opposed to guys hitting 30 then hitting 60 every year. When it happens, it’s usually pretty obvious it’s happening. Or in some cases, you don’t notice because who was really paying attention to guys like Melky that hit popped.
      I will grant you that A-Rod was a surprise the first time I heard. But Clemens was obvious. Pettitte surprised me, but that was based on perceived character and him not being on my team anymore so I wasn’t paying much attention. Looking at his stats, his sudden emergence as an even better pitcher after an injury would have raised my eyebrows if I was watching it game by game.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stingrey1571 but I agree the media doesn’t have a great track record here. This just isn’t media driven for me. Based on everything I’ve seen with ped use in baseball, nothing about Aaron judge makes me suspect him. No tell tale signs, no abnormal spikes in stats, no change in size or body that’s visible.
      Unless a player gives some kind of reason to suspect, I don’t think we should. We know they’re testing, they’ve been testing his whole career. We know people get caught and we know that fans are slow to forgive. I don’t think very many are trying to do that anymore. Remember, these are players who grew up idolizing players that are not in the hall of fame because their cheating has yet to be forgiven. Right or not, agree or not, it’s happening. And players are less likely to cheat knowing that’s one potential punishment if they’re caught.

    • @snerdterguson
      @snerdterguson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He has a lot of strikeouts, but people ignore the context. He has more bad strike calls than anyone, more bad strike 3 calls than anyone. This of course means some at bats, he has to reach for a pitch that he knows is a ball, because he will likely not get the call. He has about 170 this year. I would bet at least 50 of them were caused by bad umpiring.
      One thing people who Bri g up strikeouts don't mention is despite striking out, he has a great BB/K rate this year, I believe he's top 15 in the league.
