Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1903 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels" and part of the Western canon. The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a river-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the African natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil. Although Conrad does not give the name of the river, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. In the story, Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver. However, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization, in a cover-up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region.

Just finished the story, honestly such a great novel. The first half was good, but the second half was amazing and constantly gave me chills after chills. Also, excellent reading by Bob Neufeld as well!

This is the third audio book of Heart Of Darkness that I sampled before finding a reader with an appropriate voice. I've read the book before, but this is great to listen to while working on my computer.

Best version out there, the voice fits perfectly, however I wish there could have been more variety in the way he says certain passages. For example on the fast-paced, action scenes he could have sped up a little and sounded more exciting..

Excellent reading! I also liked Bob Neufelds reading of the Island of Dr Moreau too...trouble is...I often listen to these at night and, because his voice is so mellow and rhythmic I often fall asleep to it when I really want to listen more! I definitely think he should be doing some sort of voice over stuff professionally if he hasn't already. Anyway, thank you for the upload. I don't know if the word 'love' is really the appropriate verb to describe an appreciation of Conrads novel...it tells of many true and dark things, done in such a poetic language that it is darkly beautiful...remarkable really when you think of English being Conrads second language...one minor peeve I have with the text, however, is that he will keep repeating the phrase 'heart of darkness' again, and again...straight up and in slightly differing permutations, to the point where I feel it goes beyond reinforcing his point about the darkness of the human condition and becomes something of a writers gimmick...I daresay he thought it clever, in a 'meta' sort of way, but when I read the phrase 'heart of darkness' again for the hundredth time in the text, it takes me out of it and reminds me I'm reading a book called heart of darkness! Anyway...minor point really...because the story itself, the framing of it, the revealing spirit behind it and, as I have said, the sheer poetry of the bulk of the text more than make up for this small point.
