    Your designs and "how to" vids have been amazing and a big help. Looking forward to the Rubio Monocoat vid, I think my expectations were too high or I did something wrong on my last table. The sheen you had on this table was just right, my was a little lackluster. Why is the oil finish not ideal for clear epoxy? And is there a brand that is ideal or is it all oil finishes?

    • @jeffmackdesigns
      @jeffmackdesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad it's helping! The oil finish on clear epoxy just doesn't make the epoxy as clear as it should. We recommend using Rubio Monocoat Pure 2C Oil. Thats what we use on every piece that leaves our shop.

    Great tutorial and great products! I watched part one and kept watching subsequent videos because I need more information about measuring. In your video, I watched you only measuring the 'river' with average widths. What about covering the boards with say a quarter or half inch of epoxy? I didn't see you take the board covering into consideration in measuring. Thanks

  • @StevenDavisPhoto

    Thanks! How do you clean the epoxy off the paddle mixer? I have the same one and it's really annoying. I usually just use wooden paint stir sticks for smaller pours.

    • @jeffmackdesigns
      @jeffmackdesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We normally just lift the paddle mixer out of the epoxy (but still in the bucket) and give it a spin to remove any excess epoxy and then just let the rest cure. We peel off what we can when it cures and leave the rest.

    Haven't tried Rubio yet, but how would you say it compares to Osmo polyx? Or when would you use one over the other?

    • @jeffmackdesigns
      @jeffmackdesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it's comparable to Osmo. Osmo requires multiple coats which is a down side should you need to do a repair. the one coat oil system from Rubio is great if you need to do a little touch up work if the customer scratches or dings the table.

      In terms of scratching, I would compare the resin to the wood in terms of scratch resistance. If you drag a heavy or sharp object across any table, it will scratch. I'm not sure how a video would explain that in more depth. Perhaps you are using a different kind of resin or it's not curing fully?

    • @jeffmackdesigns
      @jeffmackdesigns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would recommend waiting to use the piece of wood you have. If the piece of wood's moisture content is too high, the wood will shrink and move as it dries and likely separate from the epoxy. you want the moisture content to be in the 6%-10% range before pouring. Hope that helps.

    During my first pour of color I ran short by maybe a 1/4” or less and plan on adding the next layer in just a clear to finish the table. Will using the Rubio Monocoat once I’m done now make my finish cloudy that I wouldn’t see my color nicely or is that recommendation you made applying to an ALL clear pour with no colors at all? Thank you!

    I got a laugh at that epoxy board bending! I now know how important it is to use the correct ratio. Matt Cremona did an experiment where he added more and less hardener to his resin, and oddly a little less hardener made it even harder 🤷‍♂️ as for me I've always just tried to follow the label.

    • @jeffmackdesigns
      @jeffmackdesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very odd how less hardener makes it harder. We always air on the side of less hardener to make sure we get a solid cure.

    • @jeffmackdesigns

      When pouring epoxy as a finish, you want to make sure it drips over all edges of the table and as it cures, you want to wipe away the drips periodically until the epoxy is cured enough to not drip anymore.
      Otherwise, you end up with the drips curing. Hope that helps.

      Hi Ray Lewis (if that is even your real name 🕵), Rubio won't result in a crystal clear finish on clear epoxy. Rubio on clear epoxy always looks a little foggy. For clear epoxy, we have had the most luck by sanding up to 3000 grit and then buffing with a polishing compound. We have a video planned to show how we polish clear epoxy soon.
