- While Aang was struggling to come to terms with his role in ending the 100 Years War and the implications of his final battle against Firelord Ozai - he called upon his prior Avatar incarnations for help. Avatar Roku, Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Kuruk, and Avatar Yangchen didn't exacty tell Aang what he wanted to hear, but their sage wisdom was still impactful in helping Aang shape his own path and ultimately deciding to take away Ozai's bending.

I like how none of the avatars give Aang the answer he obviously wants them to say.
He even thinks yangchen would agree with him given their shared ethnicity, but she persuades him by reminding him of his duty
Except, ultimately the advice is the answer. Morally they all agree, however they differ in how they carrying them out. Aang is decisive, involved, self sacrificing, and serves justice in his solution.
There is a word for what aang is trying to achieve and killing the firelord was in the way of that goal, that word is called moksha but there is a contradiction here. Aang is the avatar and he is supposed to reincarnate into the next element in the elemental cycle but achieving moksha would mean being free from reincarnation, if aang achieved moksha, that would be the end of the avatar cycle, this is why yangchen says "but the avatar can never do it, your sole duty is to the world.".
@@cordisdie8109 Yeah. She was basically saying "The Air Nomad's teachings don't apply to you, because you are the Avatar." Which is true. Yes, the avatar reincarnates into one of the four nations, but they mustn't focus solely on their own nation or teachings. This also comes into play during the original confrontation between Roku and Sozen, when Sozen states he is Roku's fire lord and he must be beholden to him, but Roku is the Avatar, thus he is beholden to no nation, but the entire world.
To be honest, one of the only critiques I have of avatar is the energy bending deus ex machina, part of aamgs character arc should have been being able to do his duty as avatar and ending someone's life to keep balance in the world
@@AzureKyleYangchen fails to realize Aang is the LAST airbender. The Avatar’s duty is to bring balance to the four nation. Aang is the last living embodiment of the air nomads. If he goes against the teachings of the Air Nomads then that culture ceases to exists. His circumstance is different from Yang Chen or any Avatar.
Aang: avatar kyoshi I need your wisdom

If Kyoshi could’ve possessed Aang the series would’ve lasted 5 episodes. The 4 until he gets to Kyoshi island and the 5th where Kyoshi goes straight to Ozai’s Palace and sends him and Azula flying off into space.
That's what I liked about that sequence. The advice from all of the avatars was not what aang was expecting.
I love how Kyoshi’s advice is basically telling Aang to grow a spine and just merk Ozai.
Well she's right. Aang's biggest fault is that he is a spineless coward who's too naive to do what needs done. At least people actively feared kyoshi. Only people that fear aang are only based off the propaganda or if they saw his power in the avatar state.

I wonder how she had to learn the lesson of needing to sacrifice her ideals in order to properly perform her job. I know some novels just came out for Yangchen, so maybe it's explored in those? Also, being the Avatar is so sad. You have such a huge weight of responsibility thrust onto yourself without a choice in the matter. I bet every Avatar gets a version of Imposter Syndrome or something at some point until they finally embrace their identity and role in the world.

Aang was inadvertently not just thinking about himself but also about the culture of the Air Nomads that only is surviving through him.

She was taking away Aang's little loophole.
Yangchen's advice shows such a deep understanding of Buddhist/Taoist traditions, which often emphasize that enlightenment, while an admirable spiritual goal, shouldn't be one's only or primary goal in life. In fact, Lao Tzi consistently emphasizes that obsessing over spiritual pursuits or trying too hard to achieve enlightenment is the most surefire path to ruin. The Avatar is the embodiment of doing-by-not-doing. A living contradiction, who achieves great wisdom as a result of NOT actively seeking it, because their role requires them to not waste time on vain sophistry, but instead go actively embody ideals of balance and justice.
I really love the idea (which is taught in my religion too) that the only way to actually manage a change for the better, either for yourself or others, means not only focusing on your needs or seeking "what it takes", but actually is a call for action where you need to accept and learn that acting and doing things is the only way to achieving anything
Determining your own destiny. By being the person you want to be and try to matter what.
To be honest her advice reminds me of actually what Sikhism teaches, spirituality is not obtain by hiding in mountain seclusion; one must participate in the human world to be of service.

I always saw it as he wanted to be handed a solution (which he eventually was) instead of advice to consider while figuring out his solution
This is true, and it’s something we all go through at least once. He wanted consolation. But the beauty of it is that he heard every avatar’s word and let it shape his intention, which eventually enabled him to overcome his ideals and face his destiny- in his own way. In the end, he applied all of their advice while still withholding from unnecessary violence as he wanted.

Aren't we all gonna react to the fact that he thought Yangchen would understand him, but actually Yangchen was the most respected and feared avatar of them all according to the books? I mean, if it was for her she would have taken over aang and sent Ozai flying to space.
To be fair she did understand him as she was likely raised in a similar way and can see why he would struggle to go against the teachings he’s learned his whole life. Since he’s so young shes sad because she knows he’s probably going to have to abandon those beliefs if he’s going to beat the fire lord.
I love her wisdom so much, Aang has every right to believe the teachings of the air nomads, but at the end of the day, he is an air nomad, an earth citizen, part of the water tribe and from the fire nation. It's the 6th chakra, he needed to understand that he is part of the world and the avatar cannot hold onto the values and morals of one nation.

People often drag Kuruk for his inactivity, but the Avatar's position is to act as mediator as a last resort. If countries can sort out their differences in a peaceable manner, then interference is not required. He probably still traveled the world ensuring people are fed, and are safe, but considering there likely wasn't a world shattering conflict such as during Aang's or Korra's reincarnation I would say high level interference likely wasn't required. Yangchen: “Yes, ALL life is sacred.” It’s her saying that instead of any variation that suggests it not being her own belief, and us knowing what she did to keep balance in the world despite that. Makes you think how much pain she was silently harbouring.
It’s something when Yanghcen tells Aang he’s not just an airbender
It was easy for Yangchen to say that. She was able to put her Airbender beliefs aside so that she could fulfill her Avatar duties. Aang didn't have that luxury. He was literally the last Airbender in the world which meant not only did he have a duty to conserve the world, he had a duty to conserve his culture. Imagine being the only one left of your people. That'll be rough buddy.
@@MistaCUNextTuesdayAnd if Ozai killed him, then the Air Nomads would be extinct forever and their culture would be lost forever. Being the last airbender doesn't excuse Aang from his Avatar duties. In Korra, Tenzin decided that as a result of air benders re appearing, and Korra being seriously wounded by Zaheer. Not to sound offensive but virtually all Buddhist philosophies are copy paste of Hinduism.
How do I find what my duties in life are
The Avatar is a concept that heavily borrows from Hinduism and the difference of Hindu and Buddhist beliefs comes down to how they see the enlightened state. Aang: "all life is sacred, including the fire lord Ozai, right?"
Yangchen: "No, he's crazy and he needs to go down."
Avatar Yangchen’s wisdom is the most interesting to me. She believes, as Aang does, that all life is sacred and that the taking of life is morally wrong. Yet she still counsels him that ending Ozai’s is necessary for the world to balance itself.
Despite popular opinion, a wrong can make a right. Being bound to one set of morals and ethics limits and constraints your actions, and becomes just another weapon to be used against you.
Aang is so fast that he put on his shoes at 3:31 and we didn't even see him move. He takes them off again at 3:41 just to showcase his speed again. Truly the greatest avatar to ever live!

He didn't want to show feet to Avatar Kuruk.
How did I never notice this?😂
I like to think all the avatars are just waiting in line to give advice to Aang like, "ay yo Kuruk, you're up"
When she told him he could never fully detatch himself from the world because of what he is. That's so true! No matter how many times the avatar dies they will always end up manifesting into the world again because that's the nature of what they are. They seem to be metaphysically trapped in the physical world and whatever avatar is currently alive. Whatever experiences they accumulate just get added on to the next avatar for them to use as some sort of encyclopedia.
That's actually kind of dark if you ask me.
True your soul csn never truly rest
What I love about this, is the magic happening when you can see the strength and holiness of the bond with the previous lives, so amazing and always mesmerising thought all the series. I wish we could have seen that development in Korra’s journey. It would have change for the better our perspective and we would see it less detached- I genuinely loved the concept.
Ye but korra was an opposite to aang not very spiritual ( make sense tho bc there isn't a lot of ppl who are beside of the air bender), and wasn't with people who told her how to do at a young age, they trained her for elements, at the end of the 1st season she gets a link with aang, and one with wan in the 2nd,but yeah I miss those links too, there is something interesting about that I think the world changed so much with aang and Korra that those old avatars could've been out of age , even tenzin said " you changed so much things in some years than an avatar would do in his entire life" , Aang in one of the comic book, cut the spirit link with Roku for some time bc Roku is outdated and thinks the world need 4 nation and can't live together that would make a mess " but aang create republic city years after, so maybe their knowledge of the elements were lost but their vision of the world can be outdated, and it's very difficult to go far from your past lives, you have to be more and more spiritual
There’s a difference between seeking advice and seeking validation, Aang.
Coming back to this years later, its crazy how deep and meaningful the writing in this show was for a "Childrens" Cartoon. Something like this really only comes around once in a generation.
I was 15 in 2008 and it took me a long time to experience something like Avatar again. It was Star Wars Rebels. When I was 12 I had no idea what layed in store.
Avatar Kuruk describing himself as a “go with the flow” kind of guy is so Waterbender
I think Yangchen's advice was the most crushing, simply because he was trying so desperately to hang on to the tenets of his lost culture, and was hoping that she would affirm that impulse. Then she comes along and says "you might have to sacrifice your tie to your people to win."
I kind of agree here with Avatar Yangchen "selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs, and do what ever it takes to protect the world", but I'm glad that Aang found another way to solve his problem with Ozai.
That's why he won the soul battle against Ozai. His spirit is truly unbendable.
A prime example of don’t tell ppl what they want to hear. Tell ppl what they need to hear
Roku’s voice actor is underrated. Everytime he speaks I get chills ngl
Aang:Monks thought me all life is sacred
Gyatso*the monk that thought Aang*: Have you counted the number of enemy bodies around my corpse! What do you think killed them...Health Problems!
You do realize that what Gyatso did was out of desperation and the thought of losing Aang?
@@thezplayer3002 And what do you call the 100 year war with the Fire Nation and the Fire Lord? A vacation?
Lack of oxygen is a health problem
The writers really carried this show, the dialogue always sounds perfect
If only Star Wars always achieved it
This scene feels different after having read the great novels which expand upon Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen
Definitely, I can see why Yangchen feels the way she does
Kuruk has a novel?
@shoverload5135 no but he is expanded upon in the Kyoshi novels since he came before her and she inherited a lot of his problems
@@BobPantsSpongeSquare97such as?
This show was such a banger remember it as a kid
"You must be decisive." - Roku
1:33
"Only justice will bring peace." - Kyoshi
2:24
"You must actively shape your own destiny, and the destiny of the world." - Kuruk
3:18
"Selfless duty calls you to sacrifice your own spiritual needs and do whatever it takes to protect the world." - Yangchen
4:53
3:28 the fact that they make a bunch of little cuts, but understood that aang talking to momo is crucial, is outstanding upon the channel’s part. It’s like Bumi said, “someone’s missing from your group. Someone very important… *Where’s Momo?”*
Yangchen and Kuruk are such interesting Avatars. From what I remember, Yangchen was so revered because Kuruk had to clean up the messes she left behind. She kept the peace between the nations, but failed to keep the spirit world in check. Which resulted in powerful dark spirits being unleashed. Kuruk had to deal with these spirits, and on top of that lost his lover to Koh. Citizens disliked Kuruk’s incarnation because he wasn’t active in the politics of the world. But as he said, his era was relatively peaceful. If he could let the nations work out their conflicts, there’s no need for him to get involved. Unfortunately his battles with the spirits took its toll and he lost his life at a very early age when he should have been in his physical prime as an Avatar.
On the flip side you had Kiyoshi who blamed Kuruk for her problems because he didn’t keep the peace between the nations. Her era was filled with conflict because of it. But she likely never realized she didn’t have to deal with powerful spirits because of him. Being the Avatar is basically a double edged sword. It’s either dealing with spirits, or keeping the peace between the nations.
It’s so funny to me how each Avatar usually just leaves problems behind for the next incarnation. It makes me wonder how the new Earth Avatar is going to deal with Korra leaving the spirit portals open. He might have to deal with powerful spirits the same way Kuruk did.
Interesting comment. Truly thought provoking.
After just finishing the Yangchen books, her advice hits so much more differently, knowing everything she sacrificed to protect the world from itself.
When the avatar that talked her way into world peace is siding with Kyoshi and telling you that killing is the way to go, that's when you know you're in some deep trouble.
Kyoshi: “Personally, I’d start blastin’.”
😂😂😂
Imagine if Aang asked ALL the past lives, all they way up to Wan.
Imagine asking Kyoshi for advice thinking that Kyoshi wouldn't immediately ice Ozai lol
Avatar Yangchen is a total boss. You just know she took her duty as the Avatar seriously.
hmm.
This scene gives me goosebumps every time
Aang wasn’t looking for advice. He wanted someone to agree with him.
Aang: Avatar Szeto, I need advice to defeat the firelord.
Szeto: Tax the firelord.
Because he's the tax man!
Yang chen and kyoshi having the same personality😂
Kurok the humor king😮
Roku comfort advisor❤
They have similarities but they're really not the same. Yangchen was known for her compassion and for her ability to manipulate selfish people into doing the right thing. Kyoshi typically threatened them instead.
Don't blame Kyoshi 💀😂
Aang: Shen’s ignorance killed him
Kyoshi: Personally, I don’t see the difference
Aang: I knew I shouldn’t have asked Kyoshi
Perfect.
My savage avatar Kyoshi 😂
Technically Aang was right 😂 She was just stubborn
I love this show so much, it was my childhood and my spiritual awakening
Aang: I've never took someone's life
Wasp:
To be fair it was a bug so ig that's a pass to him and Appa was gone
@@maxpower3990 alright fair point yeah I still think aang should of killed ozi but taking his bending away is a start ig 🤷🏾♀️
All life is sacred until it decides to touch Aang's friends
air nomads with their Bison being harmed are like an invitation to end your life😅 Aang and Yang Chen can tell you that😂
The Fire Nation Fleet that attacked the Northern Water Tribe:
I love how Kyoshi just went straight to the point
The past Avatar advice is basically telling Aang to stop hiding behind excuses and make a decision and be ready for the consequences
“I’m not gonna listen to the dozens of past lives I have and instead listen to a giant turtle.”
Even Yangchen a air nomad who had the same teachings as Aang understand that a Avatar's duty expands beyond a personal need for enlightenment. If this wasn't a kid'a show Aang would've slaughtered Ozai
The classic needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few scenario
Isn't that kinda what detachment and Buddhist enlightenment is all about ironically?
In a way, Yangchen was guiding him towards a better understanding of enlightenment than his young understanding of it. That one is more enlightened and objectively aware of things when they are willing to empty themselves and be beyond just their personal wants.
It's in being beyond yourself that brings one to enlightenment if I understand correctly, it is not quite a personal desire in itself like his desire to keep his pacifist code.
Aang’s character suffers for getting the lion-turtle copout, imo. His character arc is about accepting the responsibility to solve problems only he can, but at the story’s climax he is gifted a way to bypass a dilemma that cuts to the core of his beliefs and character. The fact that the writers allow Aang to keep his hands clean in a war story doesn’t help.
Shut up cloen just shut up
@@GrapeCheckerBoard I mean the worst part is his hands aren't even clean
Avatar yang chin probably gave aang the best advice. So underrated
It seems like yangchen already knew what aang was gonna ask when he started with "The monks taught me all life is sacred.. "
Seeing the past Avatar, and them giving Aang wisdom and advice is definitely my favorite moments in the show. I have to say that I love Yangchens advice because she is an Air Nomad like Aang...Her advice is my favorite response, basically saying, "at the end of the day it's not about you, it's about saving the world."
Kyoshi: “Only justice will bring peace.”
Aang: “BUT have we tried hugs and kisses?”
Kyoshi: -_-
I love that Roku smiles as he says they are prepared to give him advice.
He wanted an someone to agree with him, or to be given a ready solution, as the majority of people does, especially at a young age. But this shows only his feelings.
However, his resolve was to do not what he wanted, but what he needed, wich was hear advice thet would disagree with him, frustrate him, but bring him to reflections in order to find his own way.
Can we talk for a second about Kurak, because what happened to him and his love was messed up. Ko an evil spirit took her 'as punishment' for Kurak not being proactive when he actually was according to the comics and gaslit him into thinking this was his fault. Whats worse is killing Ko would mean destroying the souls trapped inside him.
Aang: All life is sacred, I'm even a vegetarian!
Plants: Am I a joke to you?!
That's a hilariousy brilliant observation 😂😂😂😂😂.
I have always loved the fact that Yangchen is the only one who calls Aang: "Avatar Aang". She knew that even tho he was a kid, he was The Avatar, and had to bear that huge resposibility. She treated him with honor for that
My grandma just sent me old quotes from famous people. I told her theres a lot of great quotes in movies and shows. This scene came to mind.
I love avatar aang, because he potrayed as a child that still need guidance to be avatar
The fact aang proved them all wrong in the end. Tremendous amount of respect to him
Just noticed a continuity error that I had never noticed
Up until he's shown saying "I knew I shouldn't have asked Kyoshi" he's barefoot, and then around 3:30 he's shown wearing his shoes, and then barefoot again when talking to Yangchen
Aang took all of their advice but in a way that they wouldn’t have. He was decisive by choosing an alternative to killing Ozai (taking his bending), he was just by forcing Ozai to suffer his worst fear (being powerless) just as Ozai and his forefathers made the world suffer, he actively shaped his own destiny and the destiny of the world by sticking to his guns and still winning and introducing a new, non violent solution to the world, and he was selfless and dedicated to his duty to the world by recognizing that he could have died if it went sideways but recognized that putting himself at risk was what needed to be done to protect and save the world.
Aang - talks to four past lives
Wan- "bro when is it my turn !?"
Wan is over hundreds of generations behind every other avatar.
Wooooow! Comments!! Finally bringing a community back. Turning off comments was so toxic and restrictive
"Only justice will bring peace" always hits me hard. Materpiece of a scene all 5 minutes of it
Each Avatar appears with his/her own element sound
I like that the way their spirits "detach" themselves from Aang's body reflects their natural element
It isn't kids show *only justice will bring peace* very true
There are memes of kyoshi I love it!!
Aang : how do i stop ozai without killing him?
Kyoshi : have you conisdered putting him in a coma.?
I literally lol'd.
Meanwhile Kyoshi accidentally kills Chin
@@AstroSully "accidentally" being the keyword
