Hey Matt! I have the exact same view of my old commercial directing dreams. Labels don’t matter. I guess this is what growing up and maturing is. Appreciate you sharing 🙏
Also, I don't have "Connections" in the "Industry" and like you said, "You need to have people in the industry to vouch for you." Which gave me the realization that I really dont need to have people in the industry (to some extent, yes) however, creating the work that you want to see is the way. I believe in "Create your own Industry," because the world will come to you.
Same here man. I remember when I first followed you I was dead serious on being a DP. I even read the artist way like you! But one of the things with opening up your inner child / artist, is that it will surprise you. I found myself attracted to screenwriting, drawing and directing. And that scared me at first. This year I produced a short film, and I’m on my way to directing my first short film, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Probably will try TH-cam at some point too! Anyways love your videos man. Keep creating!
Thank you so much for being open about your process and path in this career. I have been having some similar thoughts as well, thank you for sharing! All your videos always inspire me to keep moving! Keep it up man.
I truly needed to hear this! These are the same EXACT THOUGHTS I've been having, too. I just finished my final year in Film School and one of my goals is to follow this new niche of "creating your own audience" & "your own work." Its so crazy because, MOST people are still depending on Film Production Companies for "work" (which is also okay) not realizing that they could actually do their own thing. Won't be easy, but it'll be worth it in the end.
I've been on that same journey. At the end of the day I have now chosen to just make the things I want to make regardless of whatever role I am playing.
This is exactly where i hit a few months ago, I love so many aspects of filmmaking , but I don’t want it to be my entire existence I just wanna do hoodrat shit with my hoodrat friends Keep making things man, hopefully we collab in Toronto one day 🫡
I’m making it my 2025 goal to start building an online presence so this was a great motivation for me, thanks Matt
You got this Oscar!
me too!!!:D

It's definitely still important but don't let that be the deterring factor whether you go out and make stuff or not - is what I meant!

Nothing wrong with that at all but I think it's important not to shy away from this new path and adapt!

Make it happen!
