My 14 ft. "Winner" has a 1957 Evinrude/ Johnson 30 hp motor and it's awesome! The motor is unstoppable..and the boat came in mint condition. Found it on crags list for $800.00 dollars. Love it! I live in the Adirondack Mountains in up state NY with hundreds of lakes to play on.
Sounds like a cool boat. I had a 55 hp on my 1961 14' Crestliner and people told me it was too big for the boat. I think my boat is probably built lighter than yours. The stern sets low in the water even with a 40 hp. My boats max rating is 45 hp.
I've got it 2nd from the top and if I go to the top hole I have bad cavitation problems in the turns. I think the problem is the hull may have developed a hook. Peter
That boat probably doesn't weigh 500 lbs empty! Those 1950's runabouts were glorified fiberglass bathtubs. Flat bottom for efficient planing. No real seaworthiness.
The old throttle/shift cable type is still available from Teleflex or Ultraflex, the Italian maker. BUT, your cheapest and easiest route is actually to use an old CHRYSLER single-lever control, which is a MORSE in disguise! You use 33c cables with adaptors at the engine end. Morse even had SPECIAL engine-end fixtures that went right on OMC outboards and enabled use of their cables. And those can still be found.
The problem is that the boat has a "hook" in the hull from sitting on the trailer for years and going up to the next notch helps a bit but it develops cavitation issues.....
Ah, the good old days when you mixed a quart of oil with six gallons of gas and were thrilled if your 14-foot runabout hit 30 mph.

You are blessed Kelly!
What year is your winner boat? I have a 56 winner Skylark, with a 57 Johnson 30 hp on awesome boats👍
1956 was the Only Year the 30hp Big Twin/Lark was made. In 1957, a bigger Block 35hp was introduced
Nice!!!!! I have a 14ft 1961 larson with a 1977 johnson 55hp outboard. The boat flies!!!

The best money can buy 👌
Very very nice.... Great little ride...

Nice motors, I had a few. Put one on a 10' inflatable with a high pitch 2 blade 🤗
Have any of yall replaced the flooring on these boats?
never thought a 50s engine would push that boat along so fast

Mine came with the boat but you should be able to find them locally or try e-bay. Peter
I used standard OMC two lever controls/cables which fit most Johnson/Evinrude motors from 1953 through to the late 1970’s. Peter
Where did you get them?
where did you get your throttle and shift cables or how did you make it work?

if you Raise your motor up two noches it will lift your boat out of the water more and go faster and get better gas milage
Hi if you raise your motor higher on your boat. It creates less drag. Hence faster. Speeds!
Turning them into prop riders? Gar Wood would be proud! 🤣
One more notch on your tilt would get the nose out of the water and give you even better top end.
