    I'm not trying to be disrespectful as I feel these kids had great things to say, but why would you guys only bring in kids with scholarships? There's really very little diversity in this conversation. Where are the kids who couldn't get scholarships? The kids whose parents are working three jobs to get them to school? Or the kids who have to work night and weekend jobs just to get by? I'm not saying the whole conversation had to revolve around poor urban kids trying to get an education, but it would have been a good idea to do a better job of representing the average norm.

      yeah i also wanted to know why colleges are so much more expensive everywhere else but california. i paid eight hundred something a semester and around 300 dollars in books in the CSU system. i worked full time at nights and paid for it myself that way. as expensive as it is in other states, i couldn't have done that

    • @rb385354
      @rb385354 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      that's what went through my mind 6 minutes in, those kids are probably at the top 10% compare with majority of the students, most students don't have the intellectual capacity to be on the scholarship and have to pay pretty much everything. Plus the bigger issue is the youth unemployment rate, there is simply no guarantee new grads will have a job. Education reform is what's needed

    • @mykectown
      @mykectown 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      ***** No, Viknesh. Just because you do well in school doesn't always mean you will get a scholarship. And even if you do, that doesn't mean it will pay for all or even the majority of your schooling. And who said anything about brats or kids who don't study hard? Those are your words. Who even said the kid should get all their fees paid? You're jumping to ridiculous conclusions here which doesn't help anyone as far as having a discussion. The issue is this video ONLY showing kids who have scholarships and doesn't really discuss the struggle that a lot of kids (who do well, get good grades and aren't "brats") go through when it comes to attempting to better themselves by getting higher education.

      Republicans and Dems in the House and Senate can ignore the problem all they want but it is going to hit the fan eventually. The loan restructuring is nice but it just extends out the loan from 10 to 20+ years.

      +Tyler Bush What's wrong with propaganda if it's a positive message the administration is trying to get out there? I look at this video and think Obama wants people to know he's aware of the high college costs and want to hear first hand from the students attending and their perspective of the problem. I mean in all honesty in a world as big as ours you kind of have to have these kind of videos to relay messages to people. And of course if you get to have a sit down with the President it's going to have to be well deserving kids and pre-screened..I don't thing there's anything wrong with that.

    • @tphelps992000
      @tphelps992000 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SignalLost730 You're saying you would just pick kids at random to meet the President of the USA? Censoring is when you prevent information, Obama is just trying to get a message out that he's aware of the high tuition cost issue, that's all this is.

      Colleges became for profit plain and simple. Nothing else besides that. They got used to the state money and when the economy contracted in 2007 they kept raising pay and bonuses. As it all crashed down they kept doing the same as states begin to cut back hard.
      Now you are in a vicious cycle as people get lower paying jobs so less tax revenue and then less money to colleges and then less high paying jobs. You get how this game eventually works out.

  • @richsums
    @richsums 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Why not address the root cause? With the access to information the way it is today with the internet, we should rethink the way we go to college. We should cut out the middle man and develop community testing centers. The courses and content are out there for free! We don't need to throw money at this problem, simply need to rethink the process.

    • @PaulRizzo504
      @PaulRizzo504 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First thing you can do very easily is get rid of the paper books and switch to an electronic system. Unfortunately lobbyist control everything in this country. Just bootleg the books and save 1,000's a year.
      Simple PDF file on your tablet or phone a college makes you pay for a book on top of their tuition. It is a cozy relationship costing us TRILLIONS! The entire scam is going to crash after the middle class is tapped out from running up loans to send their kids to college.

    • @peterpiperdiedharper
      @peterpiperdiedharper 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ehh.. dude..that's a naive way of thinking. How many recognized and certified online courses are there? How many quality jobs/corporations/industries accept online course certificates?? Sure, we should rethink the problem, but saying we don't need to throw money at it is just plain, sorry, stupid.

    • @richsums
      @richsums 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      peterpiperdiedharper So you think that even though we have gone through a revolutionary change in the way we share information and communicate, an ancient instruction and certification method and is still ideal? You my friend are clinging onto paradigms. I earned an online degree while working. I make 120k base. Who cares how the individual gets smart, just test their intelligence and move on. #evolve

    • @peterpiperdiedharper
      @peterpiperdiedharper 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      richsums mate, did you miss critical reading courses, since your are putting words into my mouth. Nowhere did I say the old system is ideal, but to think here you are *an online graduate* who has figured out a way no one else seems to understand. is a tad bit too much assuming of yourself.
      There are several reasons what you said cannot be directly implied primarily, the slow speed of practically implementing a total revolutionary system *removing the middleman* as you said. Second, there is the political clutter that one has to get through to be able to implement changes, Being a good politician involves being a good negotiator, which means often getting a 100% of what you want is impossible. Third, your plan to remove the middle man will only work for undergraduates up to a certain degree, Institutions like universities were initially build to facilitate learning and gathering knowledge in one big hub, Sure, things have changed due to the nature of the system we live in, But, universities are even if they have turned into money making systems still hold a lot of accreditation, and are recognized for their degrees, something online courses have just barely started doing.
      BDW, do tell me what online degree you received.

    • @cawheeler27
      @cawheeler27 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      richsums I don't think that's ever going to really work for most people. College is about more than just memorizing information and taking exams. College exposes you to ideas and people you might never have met otherwise. It provides you with tons of ways to get involved on campus or within the community tackling issues that are important to you. It also lets you network with people who are likely to be your colleagues in the future. You can't get all of that from an online course.

      David Scott He never specifically ordered bombs on children. With regards to whistle blowers, to some regard, yes this is true. But President Obama is not above the law, so assuming this, all parties should be prosecuted according to the law in place. Furthermore, President Obama is correct to address debts (specifically, student loans), health care, foreign policy, and climate change. As mentioned, Americans should all engage and vote. Its baffling that 1/3 of Americans vote. If you don't vote, then you can't complain.

      "He never specifically ordered bombs on children." anwar al awlaki's son was murdered by a drone. He was with a family at the time. Do we know if he was specifically targeted? No, because the self described,"Most Open Administration in History" exerts executive privilege to cover up how drone targets are selected. Also we know that the Admin employs double tap drone strikes aimed at first responders who are....families.
      "But President Obama is not above the law, so assuming this, all parties should be prosecuted according to the law in place." This is a joke, you know this if you are poor, no one is equal before the law, it depends on what power and what connections and how much money you have.
      "Americans should all engage and vote. Its baffling that 1/3 of Americans vote. If you don't vote, then you can't complain."

The only thing I'm missing is going to parties and drinking my liver away. Education should be a fucking birthright, not a monetary game to shackle people into twenty-first century serfdom.
    We have major issues with education today: the costs, the increased demand of qualifications for students post-education, and the risk automation has to the solvency of the entire enterprise, which is rarely discussed. Today we are heavily concerned about paying money just to learn, just in the *hopes* one can be a somebody, that all of our paper certificates truly make us ready to be in the "real world". Tomorrow it's to see that after buying into that bullshit and playing along like a good little boy or girl, you see the double bind of our culture that expects more and more out of you despite this insoluble cost, that what you did amounted to very little and you are shackled in a game you may never, ever escape from. Soon, one will have to deal with all of that *AND* a situation where machinery can learn what a person can in a 4th of the time, and that human labor will slowly be eroded from most of this economy. From stem to stern, the education enterprise is ruined.
    We have to really rethink this entire situation. Should we really be expecting people to go into astronomical amounts of debt in the *hope* of getting a job that will very likely be automated in their lifetime? Is this *really* the fucking game we're going to play with people?

    Not sure if this has anything to do with Vice's progressivist stint but it seems like they have been much more heavily biased since Bill Maher (an Obama campaign donor) became an executive producer on their HBO show. I had so much hope for Vice being the only truly unbiased news source when they were getting on the ground, fact based coverage (which they still do some of), but they have flushed it all down the drain with this blind partisan horseshit. It is a practically undisputed fact that college tuition inflation has been caused by unrestricted student loans heavily supported by Obama, (that are quite similar to the subprime mortgaga loans of the 2008 economic crisis). Yet Obama gets to use Vice as a mouthpeice spouting lies and ignoring that this current problem and potential major crisis wasn't perpetrated by his administration. Its just depressing.

    I am in college now, and the Irish Government pays (a grant) for the 4 years of college depends were your living and how far you live from it. Its not impossible to go to college/University and have a part time job on the weekend. All I am paying with my part time job is food and drinks and get a small amount of money off my parents. Like around €100 very month or so. It must be harder in America to do this and do the State Government give a grant to every student?

      I envy Europe. Not to compare as an "Us vs Them" ideal, but most people there are far more reasoned in the world outside of the US. I imagine most of the EU will have unconditional incomes for all citizens before the US even *considers* the fucking idea. We don't even have decent health care.

      ShakinJamacian The think is the American Government are spending $700billion on military you think they should spend a small bit of that to the education to help get student to finish college/university and be able to do something after it. Instead of paying off the loans on a job you do not want to be doing.On the other hands America spends $632billion on education and still needs to put a bit more money so students can live life after college/university.
      Oh healthcare America can not give out if their government are spending $2.8trillion,Most EU countries don't have as good hospital and healthcare then America.

      ***** All things cost time and resources of the planet. It's when we add money as a rule of measurement on top of that where it all gets messy.
      Consider for a moment on why so few nations have not eliminated poverty. They often start with "where's the money going to come from" as if it comes from somewhere. We make it! But we take currency as objective wealth, when it's nothing more than a subjective tool we use.
      Our psychological attitude towards money is what prevents us from making better societies as we really can, and is the central stopgap in the United States to preventing all of its citizens with health care and an assured minimum income.

      I don't agree that this is propaganda. Vice are pretty face value. And there is some blatantly disheartening answers from Obama (government support, blaming state senators, taxes angle) which are as clear as day here. Also, Shane's demeanor seems to be focused, neutral and civil. This is good as it encourages the viewer to actually listen and stop allowing the broadcaster to overwhelm the point with their channel's agenda. In terms of style, yes, vice is very slick and I can see why some mistake this as propagating favour for Obama. But I think its quality and technical appeal only represent the channel itself. Vice dresses appropriately and let's the guest speak for himself. This is clearest angle I've gotten in Obama. It's much easier to gauge his verbal effectiveness when his party's theatrical embellishments are left outside the room. And that is thanks to vice.

      Its not "free" community college, its publicly-funded community college. AKA you, me and every other taxpayer is paying for it.
      And debt forgiveness is complete bullshit. Its another tax on the American people to support college graduates who statistically will make enough money to pay back that loan in time. And if you DON'T make enough money, because you take a bullshit liberal arts degree or go to a garbage college, that is 100% on you and not on me as the taxpayer to help you out.
      When you sign the forms applying and receiving loan money, that is a contract between you and the loaner. You are responsible for your actions. If you spend 100k on a degree, that is your problem. If you turn around and want Good Ol' Uncle Sam to bail you out then go fuck yourself. Removing personal-responsibility from citizens, increasing government spending, and increasing government power is a road to hell paved with good intentions.

    My understanding is that federal student loans is what drove up the cost of college education. The reason is that with highly available low interest student loans the demand curve increased for college education, and universities took advantage of that by increasing tuition as well as spending money frivolously.

    I'm not in any way an expert but I do read a little bit about student loans and this is just my understanding of what was asked @ 12:18. When Shane Smith asked about why the shift from state to federal it really sounded like he was given the run around. Basically, and I could be wrong, the shift was made so that money made from student loans could supplement the healthcare changes. The intention ( that isn’t working) was to use the money made from student loans to pay for “Obamacare”. Before the switch students for the most part had lower interest rates. many states had interest rates at half if not more of what they are now. The bottom line is this change increased interest rates and students/parents will pay more for education. …Smith's question I thought was pretty straight forward. I wish the round table consisted of other people who understood enough to have a better conversation but I guess that's the point of having high school kids ask questions.

    Or how about this,why blue collar jobs get thrown in holes? the problem is not the scholarships but the fact that every young person for some reason is under the assumption that if you become an economist,a lawyer a corporate worker for a big firm or some thing like that,you have essentially succeeded,but if you become an electrician,blacksmith or for an example woodworker you have failed?!
    I know a guy who studied marketing and atm is working for below average pay and is unable to pay back credits for school while at the same time i know a dude who by accident found a blacksmith who had an advert for apprenticeship and is now making quite large amounts of money by working as one him self for a private horse ranch.
    You take cash that you don't have to learn a trade that almost nobody needs and then you ponder why are you in the situation that you are!
    At the same time trades that were considered an every day norm 40 years ago nowadays can't find people willing to work,and it's not because of bad paychecks,most of them pay quite well. My country has gone down to a point where a good welder can earn twice as much as a good lawyer simply because there are too many people with law degrees but almost nobody willing to get their hands dirty.

    And he's right though, this huge increase in college cost is because college has become such a "resort-style" thing. Obviously there are some flaws here, but the basis of my dad's statement is true: fluffed up schools front fluffed up costs.

  • @mattlewis7184
    @mattlewis7184 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, I live in Texas and I went to junior college for 2 years before university. Tuition per class was $150...ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS PER CLASS. A full time schedule is 12 or more hours so that comes to $750 (5 classes X 150/per class), and with smart book shopping one could get a semester for under $1,000. I worked part time to pay for it, took out loans for the last two years, and graduated with 12,000 in school debt. I graduated 7/2012 and am now debt free. I believe problems arise when people, for some reason, think they need to do all of their schooling at a four year university for $5K+/Semester. A little critical thinking will go a long ways. Additionally, with the proper education/skill building from parents to children at a young age, college isn't necessarily for everyone. I know several people who own a business or worked their way up to a well-paid position. In school, kids aren't taught how to plan for college/life or manage money. I think if we fix our education system, then we would see big changes.
    *keep it simple, stupid*

  • @andrewlee6142
    @andrewlee6142 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I once heard a theory about why education costs are going up so rapidly. So currently, interests are capped at a certain rate (much lower than the would be the case if it was capped), therefore, more and more students (some much less apt at college than others) were able to get these loans, and get into college. Because of the availability of these loans, colleges were not being challenged by the competitive free market to make things cheaper (since students were now operating with a larger money pool of low interest school loans).
    So the theory is, if you take out the cap on student loans and make these loans operate on the same principles of supply and demand as the rest of the economy, then only those who are willing to pay the higher price would get the loans, and henseforth, colleges would have more competition since less people with loans would be coming in as a whole, and they would cut costs in order to lower tuition (basic competitive advantage)

    One reason college is so expensive is that the government keeps subsidizing the cost with grants and loans to students. As long as politicians keep voting to do this, costs will continue to rise. Secondly, colleges compete for students by filling their places with resort-like amenities, further increasing costs. Why should I as a taxpayer foot the bill for someone who wants to go away to these places? If you can't afford it, get a job and save enough money for a community college. If you do borrow money, uphold your honor and pay the money back under the terms to which you agreed. It's disturbing that first home loan borrowers, and now student loan borrowers, are starting to expect that the taxpayer help them pay off their loan. We are losing basic values in this country, like the value of paying off a debt. Also, why doesn't the president ever extol the value of the trades? Are we going to have a society of under employed educated people who can't even build a birdhouse? I believe college is LESS relevant than in decades past. One of the reasons to go to college in the past was because colleges had the libraries -- technology has mitigated that. Online learning further erodes the college's reason for being. The world is changing and this whole discussion seems oblivious to the changes. That's fine. Just don't ask me to pay for it.

    The US seems fine with taking on debt in many forms, but when it comes to taking on abit of debt in something as important as the education department, magically just can't afford to anymore.
    Education should be free, all levels, across the globe. An educated population is a more useful population. In addition, with free education, anyone and everyone would be able to better themselves and apply themselves in fields they enjoy, resulting in their performance in that field being exponentially better than your average worker today just holding a job.
    Imagine a society where everyone working a job, is working a job they enjoy and are passionate about and were able to pursue those careers thanks to access to any education required without the worry of burying themselves alive in bills... how productive we would all be doing what we enjoy... Going into work would no longer be a burden necessary to pay bills, instead it would bring enjoyment and additional effort to be added to do that much better of a job, because it's something you like and enjoy doing well....
    Isn't that something we should be striving for? The only way you make progress in fields is by having people who enjoy being in those fields to begin with. If the majority of people are simply working a job they hate, just to pay bills, they're not only going to feel burdened, but they won't give two shits if they do the job well or not, because it's not something they care about, and that hurts overall productivity by a large margin. And all as a result of banks wanting to make a quick buck off of generations vital to the succession of society. What a joke.

    For older students, school should be a self study and exam/certification system. Instead of having teachers lecture, students would use tutors to help them as needed. Exams and their results would be accessible online to prospective employers, so that they can objectively judge job applicants. Standardized exams would make it easier to compare students instead of relying on school pedigree and GPA. The exams should be written with guidance from industry because they hire the workers. This system would be accessible to almost anyone who can buy study materials and has the time to study. Instead of building more schools, public libraries could be used as study halls and tutors would be on site.

    Thanks vice for that soft ball interview. No real questions about why the gov made 4.9 billion dollars off of students backs.

    Didn't expect this kind of p.r from vice. But what do I know.

    Well done Mr.President. Community college can be a good ticket for the average students to enhance themselves to the University Degree.

    I honestly don't understand why everyone gets so upset about everything Obama does. Tons of people hold his feet to the fire over such trivial matters like how he salutes soldiers or his mannerisms when he speaks. When I listened to this discussion I see someone doing there best to make small, realistic, and positive changes to our society. Even if you hate him, you have to admit that Obama is at least well grounded in reality, and that's more than you can say for his constituents.

    I'd like to hear what his opinion is on "for-profit" institutions that have no interest in ensuring that their students graduate, instead focusing on siphoning as much money from the government via unsuspecting young people as possible. I got suckered into one shortly out of high school, naive and confident it was the way to go. After a couple years, it became too expensive for me to continue and I could no longer get financial assistance (including private loans), leaving me with a bill for nearly $30,000 and nothing to show for it. I learned very little during my time there and if I could do it over again I would stay as far away from higher education as possible.

    Sorry, no hate, but I've never seen another president address issues like this face to face with diverse students in my lifetime. A fantastic move by Obama on his way out. He's realizing just how much he can do to make a difference now that he doesn't have to campaign.

    I gotta say the scariest part of this interview was hearing the Commander-in-Chief of the United States say that he had to look at younger generations to feel inspired......
