Make sure there are no magnets and no mild steel anywhere within a metre of the compass. Being magnet-free makes it a lot easier. Good luck with it all and I hope the weather cooperates.
Thanks, I just installed mine and as I was raising the sails I inadvertently made a complete circle and the autopilot chirped and said calibration complete. So I never actually tried to calibrate but it seems to work great.
Thanks Ladies, we have failed to calibrate our SIMRAD rate compass and autopilot three times, never considered our speed may have been too low. I shall read the manual this evening! Fabulous :-)
lovely... well from the days I was working with Radio Holland, we would calibrate also in circle, but turning around schips axle. slow speed rudder full .
@@SailingYachtSaltyLass it is just to reset the fluxgate of the compass. I would also use a visual thru North at the same time and mark the magnetic compass while you at it.. anyhow... choppy waters is not going to help much auto would wanna compesate.

Well I learned something new about the boat speed, while you where Calibrating . It's normal for men not to read manuals and just fiddle about till it works , especially me. thanks for the information.
Another good video of your journey. Disappointed you can’t get to Liverpool. YM is a great rite of passage though, enjoy. Lots of mob under sail in different conditions, same for picking up a mooring buoy, springing off, the rest is Nav and not crashing or running aground (at least in the test!). Great stuff, and looking forward to the video...
We have a lot of practicising to do ;-) We are missing friends and family and it would be nice to pop over, but everything seems too unsettled at the moment. Bev made out the passage plan as a single run from Belfast to Liverpool so we were ready to go. But alas.... :-(
So sailing. , a lot like life, is about having a plan b so you are well prepared for stuff that happens. I said plan b but that can also mean c, d ... all the way to z at times! I like your positive approach to our current situation, which we are all facing. Inspiring. On configuring raymarine ap I found 2 metrics important. 1. Ensure the setting is appropriate for the boat in the setup as the default is unlikely to suit (mine was fishing boat). Secondly the circles you were doing, quite correctly, should be done with minimal tidal stream, and the wind can mess with the movement of the water on the surface. Calm and still works best, as you worked out. 3 knots would be fine in no tidal stream. A circle rather than an elipse. Ps excuse me being a smart arse after the event. Fair winds.
@@neilb2793 - Thanks for all that and thank you for the complements! We were just glad to get them all recalibrated. I must also admit, not much happened after than steak and wine ;-)
Does your AP have settings for rudder gain and sea state? Our old RayMarine had them and it made quite a difference changing them to suit the sea state. Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew. xx
We did not install a sensor, but the flux compass is quite sensitive and we found a broom handle in a nearby locker that was causing us all sorts of problems - see our latest video (Ferry gliding). Thanks for the kind word about the videos, it is nice to hear that people enjoy them 👍
This time around, we went to a lot of trouble to flush the system clean - really clean - before servicing the head. It was the most pleasant it has ever been, but it is still not my favourite job!

Awesome video! Reminds me I need to do my compass calibration... that’s yet another saga!
We meant to do our compass deviation when we were out, but it rained on us so we skipped it :-)
Great work Ladies!
Thank you for a educational fun filled episode!
Kind Regards

Ha ha! Brilliant!! Maybe we should try that next time. We were out there for 2 hours before we figured out what was wrong....
Your both ace. 🌟😊😊🌟⛵️

Hope your smiles will help me set it up. Cheers 🥂

I hope that works for you. Let us know.
Mmm steak and chips on a boat, now that is posh. Giving me ideas now for cooking now 👍👍👍
Only the best aboard Salty Lass :-)
All good stuff!!!
Thanks Karen
Sweet ladies ❤️
Thank you

Slow is a relative term. For a powerboat 3kts is nearly stopped, for us it is half our hull speed so "medium" would be a better name for it :-)

Calibration helped but we had to do it too frequently. The problem was a strongly magnetic object nearby. It now works perfectly.
