  • Looking for the largest return flow intercooler upgrade for your Ford BA/BF Falcon XR6 Turbo or FPV Typhoon/Tornado? PWR's PWI-5405 return flow intercooler is exactly what you need. With an intercooler core that is twice as high as the original, it should provide an awesome amount of intake air cooling for this build. Fitment can be a little tight - but the build quality and accuracy of the mounting points was very impressive. #MOTORINGBOX #PWR

    Hi Sean, loving the intercooler video. I'm working on my '04 Barra BA/NA and have recently purchased a differential oil cooler kit from PWR to avoid the dreaded "pink milkshake". By the looks of Your Radiator and Intercooler vids, and what I've seen of this diff oil cooler, PWR really are a quality company. Your radiator vid was impressive and is making me plan to upgrade my cooling system with a new PWR Radiator when money allows it. Cant wait to see how part 2 of the intercooler turns out. Cheers.

    I went with plazmaman for my intercooler kit and the quality from them was perfect as well.

    • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice - I highly recommend it if in your budget. Plazmaman seems to be highly regarded, they just didn't have a return flow unit that I was after!

    • @scott4547
      @scott4547 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They only do the 1000hp kit for the territory's so I didn't have a choice unfortunately but the intake temps are a lot lower now and it was very worth the money.
      Its a bit hard to have a super accurate test without a dyno and the same day doing it but are you going to do a video on the difference its made intake temp wise with the new intercooler?

    • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could put the old one back on if we wanted to check, but it is a bit of a hassle. From what I've read the stock ones perform fine up to 300kW, but on extended drives or hot days they can suffer from heat soak due to their small size.

  • @tturi2
    @tturi2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I so happy for you that you didn't go with one of those trash bar and plate ebay intercoolers, I had one on my xr8 (yes xr8) and I may as well just ran a hotpipe and put a 10kg ballast infront of my radiator.

    • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose it depends what sort of horsepower you're talking about! I've heard the stock intercooler is good for around 300rwkw, and this one approaching 400. A bit of heresy I suppose as every car is different, but I do think people go a bit overboard with huge intercoolers sometimes when they perhaps aren't needed.

  • @joshuaeacott4226
    @joshuaeacott4226 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Fantastic! Keep in mind that with a massive upgrade on the cooling side, the massive drop in IATs can cause it to boost more, and can cause the ecu to boost cut on factory tune.

    • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I won't be driving it much until it gets a proper tune. My car is currently running a piggy-back ECU with a 15-psi tune though, so it probably won't be too bad if I want to do a bit of testing first.

    PWR gear looking the goods mate! I've gone with quite the opposite approach, under the bonnet anyway, battery moved to the boot for turbo side intake, plazmaman top half plenum and 1000hp intercooler, candy apple rocker cover etc. Everything else will be basically stock AU2 Fairmont Ghia, only give away on the outside will be the exhaust tip and a 6 speed shifter in the centre console 👌 looking forward to seeing yours tuned 🤙

    Excellent vid. Issue with retaining factory route pipework is the air is reheated due to its route back close to the turbo and over the top of the engine. Appreicate the wanting to look standart set up but I think you should have made an exception in this instance. • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am no expert, but in my opinion for any given boost/power level there shouldn't be a huge difference between before & after radiator temps. The stock intercooler would be running hotter because the air is being funneled through a more confined area. Whereas the bigger intercooler spreads the air over a larger area, so it should be a lower temperature. So the stock intercooler blocks less of the rad, but runs hotter. The larger intercooler blocks more of the rad, but runs cooler. And I guess it depends how you define "blocks" as intercoolers are designed to allow air to freely pass through them. Let's not forget there's an air-con condenser covering pretty much 100% of the radiator too 👍

    Just a question regarding drivability with a larger volume intercooler, I've heard there is a risk of overboost if driven without a tune. Is that actually a concern?

    • @MotoringBoxTV
      @MotoringBoxTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the intercooler is more efficient it could potentially cause that, as the pressure just after the turbo will always be higher than what it is at the intake manifold, due to the intercooler restriction. Apparently the ECU will hit boost-cut if it goes even slightly over the standard boost level, so it is a real possibility.
      In the end though, swapping the exhaust or intercooler on most cars won't see huge gains without a tune - so it would be worth getting it done.
