@@steve1978ger another german here: it came from golden buttons used on civilian freedom fighters uniforms in the napoleonic wars, just as the flag itself actually. there is basically no relation to the HRE. also: i do believe we have a paragraph that says that on production of a flag you can use yellow color instead of gold since gold color doesnt work that well and after a while it would peel off.

3:52 no, this is not where the colours come from. During the liberation wars 1813-1815 against France there was a volunteer force called Lützowsches Freikorps (Lützow Free Corps) as a part of the Prussian army. Their uniforms were black with red details and golden (technically brass) buttons. Some of the soldiers adopted the colours in the following years as a symol for a then potential unified Germany.

It isnt completly known why but the most common therory that it was ether based on a fraternety from jena or the so called "Lützow Free Corps" a volunteer force during the Napoleonic Wars. (as the fraternety got there colours from the "Lützow Free Corps" these theories are actualy the same)

btw. Germanys Flag didn't use the yellow because of the HRE. The current Flag comes from Student protests for Unification in the 1800s. They had a civil war and the uniforms have been black (easiest to dye) with golden buttons (yellow). The symobolgie is: from dark times (black) over a bloody fight (red) to a golden future (yellow, wich is actually gold)

Wales (or cymru in welsh) is a celtic region which is why its included.
Scotland is also there (as alba, Scottish for scotland) and Ireland is to ( as éire, Irish for ireland)

The colors of the German flag were actually inspired by the uniforms of the Prussian soldiers (Lützow Free Corps to be exact) when they fought against Napoleon 1813. They were black with red facings and golden buttons.
