    I'm a musician and I'm currently building my home studio. Even though rugs do help, they don't help a lot. The real issue are parallel walls. Sounds bounces back and forth and it becomes very echoy and boomy. The best way to avoid this are rock wool (or some other sound absorbant material) panels. You can make your own very easily and cover them with the fabric of your choice (for example yellow!) or you can buy some premade. Don't forget to wear masks and gloves if you are making your own though
    And as you probably don't want a high grade sound environment because you aren't a mixing engineer, putting a lot of stuff like bookshelves that absorb or diffuse sound waves can also sometime be enough
    Hope this helps!

    The clothes and the books will help you with the sound because they eliminate the flat bounce off the walls. If you love your floors as they are you could attach old egg cartons to the ceiling thus killing the bounce in that direction. It looks like an awesome office.

    HI Hannah, I'm an Interior designer who is literally days away from graduating and I'd love to get in touch and draw up some of your ideas for you, maybe bounce some other ideas around. For example, Ecophon are a great acoustics company that can create custom sound proofing wall and ceiling panels, it may be worth looking at using them to get the soundproofing you need for filming.

  • @TiffanyDesign

    You could potentially swap around your filming corner and podcast corner, the window and the brick wall look nice as a backdrop, and you can still have the bookcase along the white wall.

    Oh, nice office. I like the exposed bricks on the inside.
    I would leave it as it is.

    It looks really cool! One piece of (very subjective) advice about the location of the desk: I've had a desk (with a computer) facing a window for a few years now, and I personally found it quite hard on the eyes, especially when I'm on the computer for a while. I don't know whether it's the combination of the natural light changing over the hours and the static light from the monitor or something else... but I've always found it easier on the eyes to position a desk at a right angle from the window. Obviously this will be different for everyone and also depend on the lighting conditions in the room, I just thought I'd share, maybe it's worth taking into account :) I hope you enjoy making the space yours and look forward to the tour when it's finished =)

    • @morehannah
      @morehannah  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      outside the window are big walls so there's no sun shining right into the window ever but I shall bear in mind!

  • @andyhartley
    @andyhartley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Good luck with that echo. Soft furnishings and maybe a lav mic required I think. You're absolutely right about the rugs, which is a pity because the flooring looks very nice. Also, a commute? What is this life?!

    So excited to see what it will look like when it's finished, the space looks like a dream! In terms of your brick walls and hanging stuff on them: the library I work at has a lot of brick walls, and we generally use tack-it to put up posters and things, and I DO NOT recommend it. Our walls are full of blue bits left over from when we've taken things down again, and it's basically a nightmare. So thought it's a lot more hassle, I would see about getting some sort of system in place where you can hang things from the ceiling with fish wire - it might seem like more hassle when you're putting it up, but if you try sticky things on the bricks, you'll never get it off.

  • @caronsmall4392

    It doesn't seem that long ago that you were filming the creating/revising your 5 year plan video and here you are moving into your own studio space! 😊 So exciting! And if you get more space at the flat for fiction books then bonus!! Good luck with sorting it all out and please keep us updated with progress (I'm sure you will!) Also hope you manage to keep the pigeons at bay! 🦆

      @@morehannah Well you mentioned you wanted a separate office so you didn't have to work from home all the time! (I had to check back on the video to check I hadn't gotten muddled up, but I don't think I did) I guess your plan just expanded itself a bit!! 😀

    Great space
    Discrete sound absorption if you attach deep pile wool carpet to the underside of tables, chairs, shelves etc
    You can often get off cuts free or at low cost

  • @withakiwiontop
    @withakiwiontop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good choice with not using the brick wall as a backdrop for your videos! I know it's beautiful, but if you use auto focus, structured walls are a nightmare - the focus will always focus on the wall instead of you :D
    Also for hanging art on brick wall: In case you are not allowed to drill, you can use wires to hang your art from the ceiling, really close to the wall. Some art gallerys hang their paintings that way and it looks really modern and elegant.
    Love from Germany!

    CONGRATS! I think it would be cool to have your desk parallel with that window (instead of facing it) so you're looking at the podcast space. Also very interesting to see you chose to put your podcast space by the big window, I would have swapped that for your filming space so the "main" area is mostly for guests then that lil nook is just for you. But so excited to see it once you've settled in and started using it - there could be an entirely different floor plan out there that better fits! The great thing about open concept. YAYYYY

    *should* you be interested in having a real plant in your new studio, might I suggest getting a zamioculcas/zz plant? I have one in the back corner of my north facing living room (so it's basically not getting any light) and it's really happy and keeps growing. I water it once a month by putting it into the shower, rinsing down the leaves and letting water flow into the pot, then I let it drain for 20ish minutes before I put her back ^^
