Dude, get more aero, take off helmet visor, skin tight clothing(not the hoodie), bend your arm's and tilt your pelvis a little more forward(you might try push seat a little forward and down 3 degrees from level). And remove the seat bag when trying to set a PR!
Aero is everything when it comes to fast cycling outdoors like this. Probably would have gone sub-3min on the track if he wore a cycling kit rather than a hoodie.
I think if someone held Nick's bike at the start like in a velodrome, he could have had his feet clipped in before starting. That must have been worth at least 2s. Sub 3 on the tra ck is doable just from that adjustment.
I love how you have incorporated different types of exercises to you channel! It reminds me that I don’t have to specialize in just running. I can try weightlifting and biking too. Keep up the good work! 👍
The world record 400 m time is 43 seconds and he couldn’t even beat that on a dang racing bike, just puts into perspective how incredible the Olympic runners truly are.
I think you’re leaving out the fact that 43 seconds was pace for ONE lap, and Nick had to go at a pace for FOUR laps. If he did a 400 on the bike he could probably get sub 41

3 minute mile isn't hard on the road. But the rolling resistance is huge on a softer track. Wouldn't be surprised if he was putting out close to 300 watts for 3 minutes. Well done.

Body position, aero clothing and helmet would have all individually made a difference to break 3 minutes. Considering you rode 3:08 on the MTB, I wonder what psi you ran your road bike at? I imagine you'd have better rolling resistance on the rubber track running 15 to 20 psi lower.

For the track mile on a bike, I reckon I'd rather have a mountain bike than a road bike. Sure the aero is worse and so's the rolling resistance, but I reckon that'd be massively outweighed by the extra confidence and speed through the curves. I've actually turned a mountain bike tight enough that the tires slipped out on asphalt, and lemme tell you that was a ridiculously steep lean. Only happened at all because I was testing to find out - it was way outside anything I'd do in normal riding.
Cranked out a few 3 minute miles yesterday at the end of my ride yesterday (20+ mph for 3-4 miles). It’s tough to get started but once you get going and lock in the gears, super easy to just keep going. I bet I could get that faster than 2:37 ;)
This is so interesting. 20 years ago I did this same challenge. Except here were the differences. My track was asphalt, I did it from a flying start (used the 100m straight away to speed up), used a mountain bike without clip ons. I rarely broke 3 minutes. But in ideal conditions I did 2:45. The key is to pick a day when there is no wind because you aren't wasting energy speeding up and slowing down as you go with and against the wind. I'm starting to realize my time was decent :):)
If you just get into a more aero position you can do it easy. One day I was bored and I did a 36 second lap on my mtb. Maybe the wider tires could give you more confidence in the corners

Fun Fact: I looked at some bike videos after this, and someone biked 100 miles in under 3 hours, which means they biked 100 miles in under 180 minutes, which means they biked each mile in under 1.8 minutes… or 1:48 per mile for 100 miles 💀💀💀
