    As someone growing up in the Netherlands, with parents that didn't have a car, I had my fair share of train travelling, but only realized how much I loved it before having a taste of the public transport in other countries (or realizing how much I dislike the whole tedious process of flight trips), no matter how a lot of Dutch people love to complain about trains being a few minutes late ;) But it's really cool to see how other people experience this and it seems like you put quite some effort in it, while enjoying it so much, I really appreciate!

    at Dutch stations you do not leave from a platform but from the track. so it is not platform 20 but track 20. as you see in some stations, there is sometimes an extra track between the tracks on the platforms for, among other things, passing and shunting trains and that also counts. for example in Amsterdam where the platform opposite track 1 is called track 3 because it is an extra track in between that also counts as track 2 but there are no platforms on that track

    6:09 You are absolutely right about toilets being retrofitted in these trains. They are placed in one the bike areas in the train. Around 50% of the trains have been fitted already and the whole fleet should be fitted by 2022 (~130 trains).

    • @blauw67
      @blauw67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      One thing to add to this. Around 2009/10 there were many complaints about the lack off toilets. NS' first response was that in emergencies a plastic bag was to be provided and to have staff take the people who really needed to pee to the control room (idk of that's the right word) that isn't in use so they have some privacy. Obviously the train operators weren't happy that their workplace was also a toilet in cases of emergency. In 2011 a mock-up was built in one train to see whether or not a toilet would be built in. NS decided that they wouldn't build in toilets in the short term. Meanwhile the Dutch government decided that in all new trains toilets where mandatory for any and all lines. It took untill 2016 for NS to decided that yes, toilets are a must in these trains, and they started inegrating them 2018. They now state that it was foolish to ever think toilets in trains weren't necessary.
      It was a scandal that these trains didn't originally came with toilets build in. The NS boasted that the train was accessible for anyone with their low floors, but never considered people with bladder/intestinal problems, and had the audacity to ask them to do their business in a bag.
      Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the NS, this is just a major fuck-up on their side.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@blauw67 The problem is that these trains function both as an S-Bahn (in which case you don't really need a toilet) on some lines, and as a cross-country service (in which case you're en route for much longer, and you _do_ need a toilet) in others. This might be a case where they forgot about the second category.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bomcabedal I think the intention is that people would use the intercity services when going longer distances, which on the one hand is fair enough - going full up utrecht to The Hague in a Slet is bonkers - but on the other hand, what if you need to go from one station out of utrecht to one station out of The Hague? Take the sprinter to the main station, then the intercity, and then another sprinter to your destination? You *could*, but just taking the sprinter is much easier and quicker after transfer times. And then you have a journey that is nearly the full length.

    • @bomcabedal
      @bomcabedal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JasperJanssen Obviously that makes good sense. What I was referring rather is to the process that may have led policy makers to decide to leave out toilets: a focus on brief Randstad journeys, at the expense of longer ones elsewhere.

      I always see this train at the platform in Woerden station. The Sprinter to The Hague Central needs to let the Sprinter to Rotterdam pass (my train). And at Gouda station it needs to let the IC to The Hague pass (my train after transfer at Gouda). They need to double the two tracks between Woerden and The Hague. To diminish waiting times and increase the amount of trains. There are only four ICs between The Hague and Gouda in rush hour and they are all full. If we want more people to take the train instead of the car, then there must be enough capacity on the rails. Two tracks are too little. The same can be said between Gouda and Rotterdam. Capacity must be up. I have a first class business card and I sometimes have to stand at the entrance hall because there is no seat available in first class, let alone second class.

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NonstopEurotrip Well yes, but Utrecht is also a transfer station rather than a destination, its the central hub of the entire network. This is definitely not true for a lot of large railway stations in major cites like London or Paris because there the transfer would be to local modes like metro systems. The city only has 360.000 inhabitants, yet the station is larger than Amsterdam or Rotterdam Centaal. Also, when you transfer you dont have to check in or out, because all the train journeys are serviced by the same provider, the NS, so all these passengers are not registered in the way they would be if they would transfer on the the Paris Metro or the London Underground for example. The Netherlands is of course so compact and densely populated that a lot of local train services act almost like a metro or light rail service over very short distances with a lot of stops but these transfers are therefore not counted towards the number of travelers that use Utrecht CS.
      To compare: About 900 trains depart from the station daily. Paris Gare du Nord, the busiest train station in Europe as you know, has almost 4 times the number of passengers that use it as a destination, but only sees about 1500 departures a day, so not that much more actually. So its not exactly like every stations figures. Now I appreciate that there are more figures that play a role like the capacity and of course occupancy of the trains, but then again, a lot of the trains departing from Utrecht CS are rather long and crowded double-deckers.

    • @heroicnonsense
      @heroicnonsense 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bigmemvb FLIRT is mostly confined to lines south of the big rivers. You'll find them in Gelderland, Brabant and South Holland. There are only 58 FLIRT units, making them the least common Sprinter model, and they're usually mixed in with other Sprinter types. Zutphen-Wijchen used to be FLIRT only, but now has a mix of FLIRT and SNG like the other lines in FLIRT land.
      The FLIRTS were bought in a hurry as the Mat 64 units were not going to pass another certification. They basically phoned Stadler and ordered whatever model and trim level was fastest to produce. It's rather surprising that they even bothered with the custom interiour.
      While the FLIRTS where being built, NS wrote out a tender for a true replacement of Mat 64 that was won by CAF and led to the:
      SNG (Sprinter Nieuwe Generatie)
      Basically a CAF Civity with some NS specific modifications, SNG is the replacement for the old stopping service trains "Mat 64" and will be the most common Sprinter train type when all the orders are fulfilled (206 units).
      The NS specific modifications are slim and basically come down them being to slightly higher to match the Dutch standard platform height and a type of seat not normally found in Civity models (but otherwise off the shelve seats nonetheless).
      SLT (Sprinter Light Train)
      SLT, shown here, was to be the replacement for Mat 64 too, with NS planning to order hundreds of them in varying lengths, but all kinds of problems with the first two batches of trains made NS decide not to order any more of them. The lack of toilets was one of those problems, but also the inability to handle powdery snow in winter and dificulty accelerating on wet rail.
      Most of these have since been remedied though, with NS having SLT modified to be more similar to its ancestor, the German BR425. This includes a redesigned air intake to prevent the problems with snow and a new traction control system that prevents wheel slip on wet rail. The retrofit of toilets is now done.
      SGMm (StadsGewestelijk Materieel (gemoderniseerd))
      The very first generation Sprinter, SGMm, has been retired from service in December 2021. There are three units left, all in running condition. Two of those are owned by the Dutch National Railway Museum (NSM) and they plan to run one of them from Utrecht Centraal to the museum on summer weekends.
      The third running SGMm unit is owned by ProRail because SGMm was the last generation of trains that can be used to deploy anti wheel slip composite on the rails.
      SM90
      There's one other Sprinter type train that everybody, even train fans in the Netherlands, always forget: SM90 (Stoptrein Materieel 90). This train was planned to replace Mat 64 (yes, they've been trying to replace Mat 64 for a long time and with lots of different train types... but SNG finally killed it). It was a failure; breaks were overheating because the ED brake couldn't be used, the glue that held the wheels to the axels was slowly dissolving and rust problems. It was retired after only 13 years of service and with only 9 units built.
      SM90 ran exclusively on the Zwolle - Emmen line because of the proximity to the stock's maintenance yard...
      No units survived, but the electric technology used is also present in VIRM (SM90 and VIRM sound the same when accelerating) and the interior of SM90 is a lot like its diesel powered sister model DM90 (of which a unit survives in the NSM).

This reason for this is that some tracks, which are counted, do not have platforms. These are basically tracks for trains which do not stop at Utrecht. This happens at other station too.

      This is not entirely correct (anymore; there used to be pass-through tracks but they have been removed during the station's last renovation).Track 6 splits and merges with track 5 and 7 on the west side of the station and doesn't exist inside or on the east side of the station (hence platform 5 and 7 form an island platform without a platform 6). Track 10 merges with track 11 also on the west side of the station, the part inside the station was removed to make space for a widened island platform 11/12. The same happened to track 13, which no longer exists altogether. Track 16 and 17 are head-end tracks which end on the west side of the station, without platforms, they are meant for cleaning and buffering of extra trains that are only used during rush hours (actually there are even more tracks on this spot but they are oddly numbered 105-107). However most tracks have an A-side and a B-side, making it essentially two platforms/tracks. For example the Sprinter to The Hague leaves from platform (or track, as you like) 20A whereas platform 20B is for Sprinters the other direction (towards Houten). So you could argue that Utrecht Central has less than 21 platforms, but another way of looking at it is that it actually has a lot more.

      I see your point. Though I count 10A and 10 B as one (1) platform. Schiphol has enormous train platforms. I believe a 16 car long train can stop there. Yet they do not use 1A and 1 B, although they totally could. Platform wise.

      Actually the card itself, we call it ‘OV Chipkaart’, similar to the London Oyster card, doesn’t give you any reduction. The mentioned 7 euro’s is the price for the card itself. It saves the 1 euro supplement on paper tickets and for BTM you pay a boarding + km-fee. Valid for 5 years. The reduction you are talking about requires a subscription from NS. It is called ‘Dal Voordeel’ for €5/month for mon-fri checkin before 6:30, between 9:00-16:00, after 18:30, weekend whole days. Or ‘Weekend Voordeel’ for just the weekends, €2/month. The ‘card’ is free with a subscription over €5/month.

Old trains are really outdated, unless of course it is for tourist purposes, but for long journeys or even shorter ones, they are sometimes painful. But why are all these stations and your train empty? It's deserted and a bit disagreeable from an ecological point of view with so few people.
