A few things I forgot to mention in the video!
    - I HAVE NO FORMAL EDUCATION. Everything is self taught thanks to TH-cam, Google, and fixing random things hands-on with a screwdriver.
    - The fully enclosed wall happened when Subway renovated in November 2023. George insulated and covered the wall that my amazing landlord left exposed and unfinished.
    - In 2022 when the writing on the wall re: this industry became obvious, I started transitioning to become an MSP and took on a few business clients (before offloading them when it was obvious TH-cam could actually be a career vs a hobby). This is where all general break/fix shops end up and I highly advise anyone still doing the break/fix model to pursue it.
    - You all are the reason I'm able to do this. Thank you so much.

Well said. After doing this for 22 years, I can confirm that laptop repair is a grind, and those mail-in laptop repairs are always the craziest issue. We are always surprised when a laptop comes in for a simple part install.
I can also confirm that I spend atleast 4 hours on a short. Script and tone takes time, putting the clips to it is the easy part.

I never noticed that your cheap threadbare channel had over a million subs.
Like Rossman and Rich, you know how to talk to people in a genuine, relatable way. I'm so happy that's a fungible skill, because repair as a small business is doomed.
Channels like yours teaches people why and how to choose repairable stuff, and to maintain, fix, and upgrade it themselves.
People need that big brother / friend who serves up wisdom and good attitude with a big dose of humor.

Hang in there. I don't know your situation, but a lot of university programs deliberately make the intro courses extra challenging to weed out people who "aren't serious." Whether that's the case or not, there's nothing that warms the calcified heart of a good professor or TA more than someone showing up to office hours, asking for help and putting in the work.
All that said: know when to pivot, _especially_ if you're taking on debt to finance your education. A Bachelor's-especially on the route to a Master's or Doctorate-is a ticket to a whole different class of job market. But the bump in pay really isn't worth it if the work itself makes you miserable.
Anyway, all the best, internet person. Hope my unsolicited advice is at least a little bit helpful.

you're pretty much my inspiration. I am 13, I repair laptops and desktops, and I love it. I get old machines as gifts, broken or not, freshen them up a bit, and give them (and soon maybe sell them) to the ones who need them. I have a workshop with a desk where I just fix things and tinker and it's my favorite of all my hobbies. Keep doing this so I can keep being inspired.

also, I was looking at a thinkpad t480, but now that I've been reminded of your shop, I will be buying one or a similar model from you instead of some shitty overpriced amazon listing. I haven't looked yet but I'm betting it's a better deal for whatever I end up buying. (I have a high-end gaming PC from my father, but I don't have anything portable, and I work on my self-hosted server and could definitely use something to work remotely. Some light gaming would be nice too...) EDIT: I am now seriously considering the T590 you sell, very nice deal.

I totally can relate. I've been in the repair industry for almost 40 years now. Dating myself, IDC. Anyway, I've had my own shop for about 15 years. Stopped 90% of residential 4 years ago because as Eli said, business is dead. But it's not, I just got tired of dealing with the BS and went into MSP and have been happier ever since. I closed my commercial shop over a year ago and had one built on my property, so home-based now. With an office in my house and a workshop when I need it outside, I'm much happier, I still make money but I don't waste $30k a year on commercial. I think many techs can relate to you, I know I do, even though there are many years in age differences, we all know the struggles. I'm running on here, so thanks for the video. Have a happy New Year!

I started working in repair shop in 2018, completely by a chance. I had no job at that moment and my friend came to me and said “hey, there is a repair shop, and one guy is moving to another place, do you want to try and work there?”. And I thought fuck it, why not. So I applied, got the job with zero knowledge on repairing printers and refilling cartridges whatsoever (and yes, refilling cartridges in Ukraine ten times cheaper than buying new cartridge). So, the dude, that were leaving was there for a week and he gave me a brief summary of what the fuck I suppose to do. After that week I worked by myself and started to learn stuff via google and TH-cam. I was terrified that I will fuck up at some point and lose job and waste my time. But I succeeded and even manage to get new customers to us. And now it’s the end of 2024 and I still work there. I’ve got some skills and experience and overall I feel kinda happy but it is a stressful job. And I’m grateful for that chance

I specialize in any and all generations of game consoles and it was never ending queues of like 10+ repairs a day since everybody was at home. Not only that but it was non-stop garbage consoles that had sat in a storage broken for like a decade being dumped on by mice in a moisture rich climate. Like, it was so damn stressful trying to basically pull off magic wand repairs for people who have zero patience or understanding. I hear every single thing you're always saying, man.

I love subbing to channels where the guy running it is this relatable. Separated from the USAF in 2012 and decided to start my own business. Bought my very own UH-1H Huey and ran an air tour/cargo business and loved it up till covid. I think it was like 2021 I remember sitting in the helicopter smoking a cigarette (yes it's still legal in private aircraft) thinking why the hell am I still doing this. Once the air tour business had to close for a while. Really sucked working a 8 hour shift doing security, going to the airport and moving some piece of something for a customer.
Fortunately met some people and got into a private pilot/executive protection role, but yeah those were rough times. This video really answers my question about why the Greatest Technician that Ever Lived has a 30 amp 120/240 volt outlet on his bench lol.

I'll never forget that your 2022 moment when you suddenly skyrocketed, I came across some of your shorts for some time before deciding to check out your page, fully expecting to see a million subs but was surprised to find out it was only 64k, then all of a sudden, 300k... I would forever be grateful to you, phone repair guru, mkbhd and the likes because you all genuinely ignited a passion in me I never knew I had until I went to work as an apprentice at a repair kiosk, before I knew I was spending 25 hours a day watching all of you guys videos and learning alot from it while satiating my entertainment needs still
God bless Andy, I hope one day I'll have a story to tell as you do❤

I am very happy to know that you are in the field. Keep up the excellent work and I hope you have a great 2025! -edit- Also, not as a dig to the people I went to school with but sorta is, you are a better technician that most of the people I went to school with. I would say that even at my best as an IT Tech you are better than I ever was.

I can't believe a closet dwelling having racoon- fingers greatest technician disses me and steals my toothbrush...I didn't knew you were renting a part/closet of subway that is insane, like it should instill confidence, I really love watching your shorts and content, also, you are one of the few TH-camrs who voice their opinions and concern on right to repair (naturally Louis is the greatest voice that ever lived for right to repair but you are on the list). Keep doing what you do bud and may Lupe get well soon if he hasn't already.

The content feels so genuine and I feel the same frustration that you feel about how tough it is getting to repair things yourself. They literally don’t make things like they used to. They make it so that you throw it away in a few years after it starts breaking down and then go buy the newest product.

As a mechanic a lot of people don't understand time is money.. I've had people tell me if I was a mechanic I would fix it and I would only charge this.. and it's like yes but you are losing money because you have 8 hours in this job and you're only charging the customer for 4 hours.. so that other 4 hours you worked for free.. and then if you charge the customer for the other 4 hours people say you're a rip-off you charge too much.. so it gets to the point where it's just not worth it.. I guarantee you nobody would get up and go to work and let their boss man take away 4 hours worth of pay off of their paycheck.. keep up the great work man love the videos 👍

@@MonarchTK_ It depends on the state and city. But in general, housing is quite expensive in the USA. California has among the highest home prices in the country. I live in a town of 70k people and most of the houses that are semi-decent start at around $450,000 USD. If you find anything cheaper than that, its usually not in a good area and/or needs a lot of repairs and work done. A very large number of people nowadays can't afford a home anymore. It sucks.
