Fricking awesome tribute. This was easily one of the best movies I've watched in the past decade, was horrifying as well without even trying to be. Just an unfiltered time capsule back to those brutal brutal times. Those times hardened our ancestors like steel and you couldn't complain about anything, in fact you'd probably be more grateful for the small things in life.
Times were indeed hard, but for as high quality as this film is, I still would be careful of viewing it as historically accurate. Certain aspects are, but much of this film is very dramatised. But then, that is more or less the entire point. It isn’t really supposed to necessarily be a period piece. Our northern forebears were certainly tough, but this film only shows one dimension of their hardships and amplifies it through a more modern, 21st century blood n’ guts filter. Our northern ancestors, contrary to popular mythos, were not all raiders that went viking. And even those that did were not the crazed psychopaths they are constantly pigeonholed as being. They could also be very kind, generous, benevolent, and good-natured. They weren’t all vengeance-seeking, power-hungry, slash ‘em up-style berserkers. There is, unfortunately, this very strange and spurious slasher film-meets-heavy metal aesthetic that always seems to be unfairly imposed onto the ancient Norse folk and I feel that is very unfounded. It leads people to think they were a bunch of dumb, ignorant, bloodthirsty boneheads that went around looking for trouble.

Certainly there would've been kindness and civility back then, and in some instances even more than today. The violence where it did exist was probably just more as a means to obtaining something.
@@darko-man8549 I didn't see it, but wasn't it out for a limited time only? It was also effected by COVID too because theaters had to follow COVID rules when it came to how many people were allowed in the theater, so that probably didn't help things either.

They should have used the Scandinavian form Amloði, rather than Amleth, which derives from the Latinized "Amlethus" in Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus.
You know, I am not sure if anyone else thought about this, but what if his father, since he was dying, set all of this in motion so he would die in battle and how it was messed up if he got away.
Still tooo much Hollywood in this movie. Many scenes just have too much unrealistic action in them. Also the fact that a cattle breeder in his mid-50s living 1000 years ago (and not in modern times with modern medicine, health insurance, fitness programmes etc.) can swing his sword in a way to severely threaten a battle-hardened young man in his 20s is just UNREALISTIC. Not to mention the almost supernatural-like killing spree of the protagonist, like he was a serial killer in a Hollywood thriller - void of any realism. Otherwise an impressive portrait of a rough, dark, uncompromising revenge crusade.
It was fairly culturally accurate but made no attempts to explain them... even I'll concede that it was a much worse movie the first watch through than the second through & I'm one who understands (at least intellectually) the culture. It's not a modern tale made for a modern audience... unlike the Hamlet version which was updated to the modern standards of 18th century English morality.

Love the use of Wardruna - I think they'd have done a brilliant job on the soundtrack - their music is perfect

There were parts of this movie that were so badass but there were also so many holes and boring/stupid sequences that made it unwatchable.
