Interesting how the starters still follow normally, honestly expected that opening scene where they follow you to be heavily scripted, now I wish you could play through the whole game with them normally, three pokemon following you all being able to keep up with the player without being sent back after being left behind by you walking sounds nice
Certain pokemon are fast enough to keep up with you easily. At first I thought it was based on Speed but Ceruledge kept up with me (Spe: 85) while Volcarona couldn't (Spe: 100). However, something pretty cool is some pokemon like Espathra are fast enough to keep up with you while mounted!
This'll be the one and only time I reference Undertale, but it has genuine vibes of a "hostile" playthrough in that game. A formerly lively world that is now eerily silent, characters that normally persist through the game missing, few to no random enemy encounters left.
With the teleportation glitch it's very easy to leave the tutorial and just start wandering through the region. The Gyms, Bases and Titans aren't available unfortunately, but you can get an incredibly overleveled team that will steamroll everything (if they actually listen to you)
@@marcosrodriguez607 if I remember correctly, when you reach Los Platos, to the upper left there is some terrain where you can catch Pokemon and go a little bit uphill. There is a part where you can see some Pokemon but can't reach them because of a gap in the road, luckily some of them are very close to the edge so if you manage to lock on to one you can throw a PokeBall to teleport across the gap and start a fight
The pokemon there are level 20-24 tho, so be ready to run from the battle. After that, you can pretty much just keep going forward to wherever you feel like
The game won't let you skip stuff to do with the story, one has to cheat if they want to skip, unless someone discovers how to (most likely the speedrunners)
I wonder what happens if you cheat your way into the academy and get a gift Pokémon without getting a starter first, would that not allow you to get a starter, would it softlock/crash, or would it not be able to work
They should add a functionality where if you get into a battle (either with another trainer or a wild Pokemon) before choosing you can battle with all three starters, I mean it makes sense since they're following you anyway. Then, at the end of the battle, another character finds you and brings you back to where you're supposed to be to choose.
So without a starter everyone ignores you, see? Only a pokémon is something worth lol Also Area Zero isn't there bc its not called it, it will call in when you pick a starter, the starters are a hidden console that activates all other scripts. We devs call that a system cube or more familier simply a Death cube
It is possible to cover the majority of Paldea without the first upgrade to Koraidon/Meraidon... It's just more tedious... And even though the game says gym badges let you catch higher level Pokémon, you can catch Pokémon much higher leveled, or as I did, I just level drinded my team, as Pokémon you raise yourself, will actually obey regardless of the number of your badges.

Uh... No, there definitely wasn't a "solution to prevent a crash". The early systems were just not sophisticated enough TO crash -- they would just process junk data and keep running undefined behavior. Crashes are the way modern software AVOIDS doing that. The "placeholder" was there to deal with corrupted save files, not to deal with impossible gameplay situations. The 3DS games might not have crashed even though the system supports crashing, but that doesn't mean it was intentional. It just means that the way those games were built happened to not do anything that would break the game before the white-out check fired. And in fact, SV isn't crashing here. Softlocks are the result of code that's waiting on something to happen that never will happen.
This just makes me realize how primitively the game is coded. During normal gameplay you get some of that (seeing the game lock character movement, spawn an egg in, tilt the camera, start the cutscene, then gives the same options as when you catch a Pokemon, then unlocking free access again), but this is on another level.
As a game dev myself... This isn't primitive. This is normal. It would be stupid to put a check in every system that assumes you have Pokemon with you when that's only possible right at the beginning of the game, so it's only necessary to add checks to the features that are available before you get a starter, and to the features that might make it possible to have an empty team. Why make things more complicated than that? The devs have more important stuff to do.

The egg hatching or evolution sequence looks unpolished and a bit like a work in progress. And some places won't let you enter from certain area's (for example: getting on the school terrain from the back will place you in front of the school instead of from where you tried to enter), which results in teleportation. Spawning pokemon in the world is also a mess. Pokemon tend to spawn a certain distance away from you, which isn't very far to begin with. But if you're moving around, it often spawns the pokemon in on top of you. And a lot of the time, they spawn into the walls as well. Area zero, several caves and various tunnels are most common offenders. And you yourself can get stuck in the wall, prompting the game to teleport you to a safe location after a minute or so. I've had that happen once after running into a Pokemon in a cave that spawned on top of me. The fact that your character always jumps backwards when encountering a Pokemon caused me to get stuck in the wall. The fact that they have the game teleport you out of the wall when getting stuck there is just a bandaid solution. It doesn't fix the core issue of how people or pokemon get stuck in the wall. Collision for characters seems to not work half the time (most commonly with npcs), especially during battles. So when I say primitive, i mean that some mechanics work with bandaid solutions and that some mechanics are just unfinished or unpolished. I just couldn't find the right word for it at the time. But you can't tell me that glitching into walls, collision not being properly active a lot of the time or sequence breaking without cheats is normal.

I don't think you understand what "softlock" means. Softlock stands in contrast to the conventional term for when a game (or other application) locks up. Screen freezes, no inputs recognized. The software must be closed (usually a forced exit from an external management program, or by turning the whole device off and on [or utilizing a reset if it has such function). The things you're calling "softlocks" are just lock ups. Softlocks are when you cannot progress in the game, but can still interact with it. Pikasprey has a wonderful series about "escaping" things people think are soft locks (and for all practical purposes *are* softlocks, as his escapes tend to require an expectation of years or decades to escape).
I saw a similar video like this but for Sword and Shield, and those games really don't like it if you skip getting a Pokémon. It actually crashed most of the time. Given the reputation of these games, the fact that the worst that can happen is a softlock is honestly a miracle.

That's not quite accurate. If that were it, the game would crash, not softlock. Instead, I'm guessing that it's waiting for the model to load, but it never will.

Since you're not supposed to be there yet, you will start finding late game items like Ultra Balls so you can try catching some overleveled pokemon
So far, I've walked like 2/3 of the map, managed to get an overleveled team, even managed to catch a lv 41 pokemon

It's interesting there is a script for you not having a Pokemon out in battle with the boss fight but didn't use it for crash prevention

It's based off event flagging like in most games. For the other flags to activate, the first one has to, it's a snowball effect.

I know why healing pokemon softlocks the game because your lead Pokémon will be mentioned in the text but you have no Pokémon so it freezes.
