I like that there was an explicit reason they sent the Cerritos; William Boimler sent the rift to their dimension because he knew the Cerritos crew could fix it. Starfleet takes that seriously enough that they're willing to follow his word to the letter.
None of this "only ship in the quadrant" bullshit. Someone asked specifically for the Cerritos, and they're gonna deliver.
And from an engineering point, I like that Rutherford caught on that the Cerritos has become the ultimate custom mod, something Billups took advantage of for sure. The old girl is kind of a badass at this point.

The bit of Rutherford permanently ditching the implant makes sense to me, the implant was forced on him by Admiral (Then Lt. Commander) Buenamigo as part of his effort to cover up his role in helping develop the automated Texas class.
So, at least to me it makes sense that he would have the implant removed for good, not to mention that if there's another crossover with Strange New Worlds or Star Trek: Legacy, It would make things much easier for Eugene Cordero to play the role without wearing a bunch of prosthetics as a live-action version of Rutherford.

I will also say that they left everything in the *perfect spot* for the Cerritos to make an appearance in _Prodigy._ I can't tell you how much I would explode with joy seeing Tendi and T'Lyn team up with Rok-Tahk.

The way I see it, When Boimler Breaks the red pad, that wasn't "Incidental", it was him almost instinctively deciding that Backing Mariner was more important than it is, this thing that he basically based his entire personality on all season, the culmination of his perpetual need to imitate others to attain success. It was an important moment.

My thoughts on Rutherford's implant being removed is that it's a beat they planned in for the purpose of making it easier to give him cameos in live action like Mariner and Boimler got. I do agree that it felt out of nowhere though.

@GSBarlev I love Rutherford as a character, but the design of his implant has always felt...clunky?..to me due to how primitive it looked in comparison to Starfleet tech like VISORs or ocular implants. Honestly? Rutherford's implants feel more like something from TOS or the first six ST movies than TNG/DS9/VOY era Starfleet medicine.
So I'm not sure how well a live-action version of Rutherford's prosthetic piece would work....especially when cybernetic implants like Keyla Detmer's exist in the same timeline.

I don't feel ready for this to end. As a queer person, wow did I relate to this show, especially as someone into space engineering, neurodivergent and so on, and the Lower Deckers are just so relatable to me (Boims being the big starfleet nerd but with anxiety and loves purple, the rebeliousness of Mariner that calls BS when it is but also growing as a person, Rutherford for being the big engineering nerd and how he related to Tendi ( saw a queerplatonic vibe) and ofc Tendi for being such a bright and enthusiastic optimistic person, plus T'lyn obviously for her not fitting the expected Vulcan box. This show seriously helped a lot with my happiness and I will miss it so much.
BTW we see the Enterprise in the coda, orbiting SB80, but we don't see more than the ship. Also I think Picard in an Admiral now because he is funding the Archeologist Guild we saw earlier on LD season 3.

Growing up, and still to this day, my very favorite television show is Stargate SG-1. There are a lot of reasons; the plot and setting are fascinating and unique, it has arguably one of the most faithful and successful spin-off series ever, the sheer nostalgia... But honestly, what always stood out to me was the chemistry between the characters. It is hard to truly nail interpersonal chemistry, especially on screen, where we don't have the filter of our own imaginations to perfect the experience visually or audially. But SG-1 was really special in how well the characters--the core cast especially, but also in general--meshed and bounced off each other. It's shaped how I write my characters more than any other media.
In fact, I haven't come across SG-1's equal (in my opinion at least)... Until Lower Decks. The extraordinary chemistry the cast has struck me from season 1. It's hard to put into words, but just how perfectly they volley back and forth, whether teasing, or clashing, or cooperating. It's captivating and I adore it. Lower Decks surprised me in so many ways that others could extrapolate on much more eloquently than I could, but I just wanted to highlight the character writing, voice acting, and animation, and how it all comes together to work just so incredibly well. It couldn't have been done without any one of those contributing factors putting in their best.
And to make it even more amazing, none of it had to be done. This was a comedy show most didn't expect much out of, I know I didn't at first. They didn't have to go all out in any of it, adult animation already has a reputation for being low-effort and kinda ugly, with little to no care or attention to plot. But Lower Decks put forth their best effort anyway, and made not just a genuinely hilarious and charming show, but a truly valuable entry to the Star Trek universe; one that demonstrated true love and understanding for Star Trek as a whole. I do feel bad they had to hastily wrap everything up, but I do feel the conclusions they crafted for each of the characters were satisfying and heartwarming. We even got justice for Starbase 80! And just some genuinely good leadership from Ransom. I'm so glad they gave him a moment to truly shine before his inevitable promotion.
I'm gonna miss this show, but I'm so very glad it's here.

My thoughts on Rutherford's implant removal was "Oh they're definitely setting him up for live action version if there is one in the future for easier transition". I think one of the reason why the crossover episode of LD and STW in "Those Old Scientist" that only had live action version of Mariner and Boimler, is the make up and technical setup for Tendi and Rutherford is too complicated. Especially for Rutherford's implant eye piece, it had to have a matching digitized eye that can emote and correspond to his other real eye, just like in the animated version.

I'm mad at paramount ... really, really mad.

I mean with Discovery, reason was lower watch numbers overall. Which sort of makes sense.
With Lower Decks, we all know thats not the reason. Maybe animation budget?

I really didn’t like that Rutherford had the implant removed. Cyborg Rutherford always struck me as neurodivergent in some way (where pre-implant Rutherford very much did not), so removing the implant kind of struck me as the creators “curing” his neurodivergence, especially since he seemed like a slightly different person after it was gone.

Yeah, that felt awkward at best. Even beyond neurodivergence, it just felt ableist. Like a cure-all for any disability. Not cool.

I feel like we could have done with a episode that was properly focused on Rutherford this season. It feels like he was in the background a little bit more this season, which I think made the issues you outlined more pronounced.
I did however have tears in my eyes at least three times over the course of the episode. All of the characters got their moment in the spotlight, Like Boimler casually flipping the saucer section to take out a bird of prey, Tendi and T'lyn's Science besties, All of ransom's strength training paying off when he overpowers Ma'ah, Rutherford unlocking the true power of the Cerritos and Mariner's speach at the end. While the plot was alittle rough in the way you've outlined, the emotional beats were 100% on target.

It’s as really nice episode but definitely lukewarm as a series finale. I don’t think it works as well as Life Itself, even if that was weakened by the shoehorned Calypso tie in. This got me emotional but that episode almost brought me to tears.
It kind of reminds me a fair bit of Endgame, this seeming one off plot material that just has the expectation of series finale thrown at it and this is just what we’re stuck with. Better episode than Endgame, but not all it could’ve been

    I see an option.
yes, it is the end of lower decks as is.
but it also pushes a new door wide open. basically DS9, but with a stable wormhole to other realities. just like a show, where a guy invented a device that opens wormholes to other realities.
maybe captain ransom will slide to those realities? just for fun?

Yeah, definitely with you on how weird Rutherford's arc in this episode felt. I have a soft spot for cyborg characters in general and it felt a bit sudden for him to just go back to being a regular old human.
Overall, I've absolutely adored this show. I love stories about the people who never really get paid attention to, and so much of the stories of our weirdo dorks reminds me of the thousands of hours I've sunk into Space Station 13(can't believe it took until now to realise that the two are more similar than I would've thought.) All these odd little guys living in a strange universe and bonding over their shared experience despite being so different from each other.

Thank you Ms. Jessie for taking the time to review Star Trek Lower Decks : The New Next Generation. It was a great show and it was so different, funny and very special within the Star Trek universe. I would love to see more of Mariner and Boimler in live action on Strange New Worlds or on another show if it is possible. It was sad to watch the last episode since it's understood that the series is ending. I watched it and I thought about the characters evolving over the years was great. Boimler is great and seeing him grow a beard and just change to have a little more confidence, Mariner really changed and she became responsible and learned to embrace her career in starfleet. Rutherford changed also and seeing him in his natural state was cool. Tendi changed and we saw her as a bad ass orion and T'lyn was a great member of the lower decks and she added so much "logic and goodie too shoes" to the show. Thank you for giving you honest opinion and review from week to week and while Lower Decks has ended we can still see you review various things. It was so much fun to see you weekly giving a review and your soul, heart and spirit is beautiful as a person, a human and as a WOMAN! I have been blessed to watch you and to see your heart being given to us with your reviews! The show was very beautiful and seeing your tears made me realize that Star Trek I have watched it since I was a kid in the 70s is so much more. There are always possiblities and I would hope that as a species Humans we can become better and be the best of mankind. Thank you again it's been an honor to see you weekly. LL&P

Not even going to lie, I was crying the entire finale. To see everyone get all the recognition they deserved. Mariner accepting her responsibilities. Boilmer finally becoming his own hero like he always wanted and being recognized for that. Tendi and T'Lyn truly achieving the heights theyre capable of. Rutherford accepting himself for what he is and loving the job he has. The respect of all the crew of Cerritos to one another. That moved me the most I think, seeing this ship that although is portrayed as the "outcasts" ends up being by far the most realistic representation of our humanity in space. Our small gripes, our prejudices, but then, also our brotherhood/sisterhood.
For something that is dismissed as just a silly comedy in the Star Trek universe, is truly one of the most moving and enjoyable ST that has come out in our modern ST era.

I was thinking that earlier today, too. With the turn the world is taking, Lower Decks' optimism of the future is needed now more than ever, and yet it's gone as a show. This animated show that I, honestly, thought I would hate because it seemed to be just banking off nostalgia and referential humor became my favorite series in the franchise because the writers understood what made Star Trek Star Trek.

While I've enjoyed most of the recent Star Trek live-action shows, I love that this show demonstrates that you don't need to move on from that classic era of Star Trek in order to be a good and successful show - that the setting has plenty of scope to tell new and different stories without abandoning what made the older series so beloved.
    I so would love a Starbase 80 spin-off.

I wanted to add on to some of the other great comments on Rutherford's removal of his implant. First off, I completely agree with you Jessie that it felt that arc was not fleshed out enough, but I think I see where this was going.
In the episode (and in bits and pieces over the season), he was constantly making comments about the limitations of the Cerritos, when in reality, it was the limitations of his implants. He knew everything there was to know about the ship, from a technical point of view. This is all when and good when you're starting off, but as we've seen with other Engineers like La Forge, Scotty, O'Brien and many others, it isn't about what the ship is meant to do, but what it is capable of doing.
So, what am I getting at?
He outgrew his implants. He has enough experience where technical knowledge was no longer his limiting factor. What he needed was creativity! Something his implants were NEVER going to give him. They became a crutch, when he is capable of so much more now. This leads nicely to his comment on how adaptable the California Class of ships are and also the overall theme of growth for the characters.
As someone who works in Aerospace, this is really relatable!
So, there's my take on it, which I think they would have shown in a longer arc next season if they had the ability to do it. Love your work Jessie, keep up the good fight!

I think the writers and actors did what they could with the situation they found themselves in. So, the issue felt a bit rushed, and some things were not fully addressed (mainly, I think there was a lot more to the Rutherford arc that simply had to get cut). I will say that the penultimate episode of the season is the one that is really going to stand out over time, as they basically said "multi-verses and fan-service are passe", and then proceeded to make a multi-verse and fan-service-y episode that rocked!

Really was an emotional episode to watch knowing at least for now it is all we will see of the lovable cast of goofballs living up to Starfleet ideals. Even knowing there were no rumors of a spin-off I had held out hopes that something would be teased to that effect and certainly where they left this season's plot there is absolutely room for multiple directions such a show could take. This show has been such a joy to watch within a group of friends active in a Trek RP that it will be quite the shame to not have more to look forward to or take inspiration from.

15:45 My excuse for buying it was that it could've been exaggerated for the audience, and maybe not what Captain Freeman experienced herself. Like how "invisible" creatures in cartoons are often shown transparent or in white outlines so that we, the audience, know where they are and what they're up to, but the other characters can't see them.
