In most Slavic languages (Ukrainian, Polish, Croatian and so on) the same word means both moon and month. Maybe, the girl was not born in US, hence there was the confusion

--> So that leaves the possibility of Canada (and Mexico, but he does not think that either)
So he was just mislead by the question into thinking that it's not the US; the rest of his logic is OK

There's many smaller countries between Mexico and South America, such as: Nicaragua, Panama, El Salvador, etc. Also several island Countries: Cuba, Bahamas, Jamaica, etc. in the South, and Greenland is a very large island in the North.
