Great example of 4 parts adding up to more than their whole. Drums, bass, all vocals, guitar...all parts elevate this song.

YES, YES, YES! That's the thing about Pixies' songs; there's nothing particularly complex about what any of them is doing, but the magic that emerges is the epitome of the 'whole being greater than the sum of its parts.' I couldn't agree more!

Get ready for some eyebrow raising and head scratching with this band. Not in a bad way, but in a “This is quite interesting and cool! I’ve gotta figure this band out” way. Pixies are a band that can keep you guessing, while enjoying the bewildering intrigue all the way.

Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of the Pixies. These guys releaaed a handful of albums in the mid-to-late 1980s. While they received some airplay here in their hometown of Boston, their influence was much bigger than their popularity in their time. Kurt Cobain (of Nirvana) said that he was ripping off the Pixies' sound and that they were his favorite band. So much of 1990s alternative rock owes its sound to the Pixies. If you haven't reacted to these great Pixies tunes, pleas do:
    Here Comes Your Man
    Gigantic
Head On (kick-@ss cover of a Jesus and Mary Chain tune).
    Monkey Gone to Heaven
There are more, but that's a good start

From what I hear it's based on swimming (diving or snorkeling probably) in the Caribbean. And the feeling of that. The lyrics make a little more sense if you know that.
But maybe he was also smoking some good Caribbean ganja before he went in the water. 😂
The cherry in top of the song is bassist Kim Deal doing those haunting backup vocals (Kim later formed the band The Breeders with her sister Kelley. They are a very cool band too).

Should do live versions of Pixies songs. Just fun to watch them. I still have my LP copy of Surfa Rosa I bought when it came out in 1988.
    Frank!
Nothing like watching very old live Pixies videos where Kim would put her cigarette in the strings on the head of her bass and play and sing through songs then finish it afterwards 😊 her great backing vocals and Gigantic❤

I love this song. The singer is on purpose always a little behind the actual beat, but he never get lost, so he is actually following the melody and beat a couple of milliseconds behind. The song is well known since the movie "Fight Club" but even Nirvana (back in the day of course; before all the dying etc hehe) and others have said that they are an inspiration. They do this live with this "tempo" between the singing and the band... hard to do (but there are not a lot to notice)

I was very lucky in the 90's. my familt got tickets to goo see U2 for the Zoo TV tour. My sis got 2 seats 3rd row center so that is where she and I sat. The opening act was the Pixies and they blew my brain with how good they are.

For me it's that kick kick snare in this song! It pulls the song along like someone with a large stone in a bag trying to drag it up a hill. A constant pull that never easies up.

Brilliant, innovative, and intriguing band ! .. Many great songs such as this for you to explore, Harri .. ( Maybe try "Debaser" next 👍) .. They were pioneers of wide dynamics, in which there are big differences in volume and intensity within the various sections of a song .. A doco about them was called "Loud, Quiet, Loud" in reference to this .. More Pixies please !

Listen to Debaser please! I couldn't get my mind off of it, and then listened to all of Doolittle. Pixies were a big influence on grunge and specifically Nirvana.
