  • Plants vs. Zombies is now 15 years old. It's no surprise that some plants have undergone massive changes and iterations throughout the course of the franchise. Whether it be changes to the plant itself, or changes to the games around it, such a plant may find its utility fluctuate drastically over time.
One such plant has been a recurring figure since the very beginning in 2009 who, despite all odds, rose from a controversial past flooded with changes and alterations, to become one of the best plants in Plants vs. Zombies 2. This plant is none other than Torchwood. But how has Torchwood fluctuated so much throughout the course of Plants vs. Zombies 1 and 2? Well, let’s chronologically dissect the tumultuous history of Torchwood.

You're undermining Torchwood's usefulness in non-endless survival. Gatling Pea + Torchwood is a pretty easy way of beating Survival Hard and you can even use Split Pea in those setups to defend the backline better.

One big balance change between 1 and 2 not mentioned is that in 1, fire peas did splash damage. If you had 10 zombies cramped in a single tiles all 10 zombies would get damaged (the main zombie to get hit got more damage and surrounding ones less but in waves it made a huge difference). In PvZ2 this was removed which made it easy to overwhelm with swarm.

    • @genio2509
      @genio2509 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

To be exact: fire peas do 40 dmg, and the splash is 20 dmg in a 1*1 area behind the main target, the same as a regular pea. The splash is cancelled if it hits metal (door, ladder or zomboni).

In particular, draftodil can stun jesters while they are spinning, allowing you to attack them. Of course, there are other plants you could use to just kill them before they would start reflecting projectiles

yeah captain combustible and the card itself is SOOO unbalanced, gatling pea and torchwood is 8 damage with DOUBLE STRIKE for 8 sun, you can do that on turn 8. if its a chompzilla, combine that with the sun production and you could do gatling pea and torchwood on turn 5. and dont even get me started with captain combustible. people absolutely SPAM black-eyed peas making it impossible to play tricks (and im a professor brainstorm player so tricks are really effective for me), along with peashooter spam. that's only his mega-grow side. his kabloom side is just so unbalanced. poison oak, 6 sun, 4 strength, 5 health, and you wanna know one of the worst parts about poison oak? oh he has anti-hero FIVE, now usually for me, around turn 6 to late game, i run out of cards more often. so whenever i can only fill like 3 lanes, they put this down in the empty lane to deal NINE damage to my hero for SIX sun.. SIX?!?! but lets take a step back a bit, because what if you combine that with the 6 cost plant that damages the zombie hero for half their health. HALF. then they play a poison oak next turn and you can't do anything. then we've got cherry bomb, another 6 cost plant, except hes a trick that deals 4 damage, but its only in that lane right? wrong. ITS IN THE LANES BESIDE THE LANE IT WAS PLACED IN TOO. SPLASH DAMAGE EXISTS FOR A 4 DAMAGE TRICK?? and finally kernel corn, which might be one of the only balanced plant cards in the game, oh but there's two things about kernel corn, 8 cost plant, 6 strength, 6 health, but deals 4 damage to every zombie on the board. im just sick of how unbalanced this game is, whenever you're a zombie and you play something like a gargantuar and have this huge army, it just gets absolutely destroyed by the unbalanced plant cards. its like you almost have to pay for better zombie cards. and i dont wanna hear anyone replying with "zombies whine to much" "get good at the game" its not whining, its facts. get good at the game when you're playing unbalanced cards is crazy. oh speaking of that, im not gonna talk about him but my most hated plant in the game. MIRROR NUT. and yeah i spent like 30 minutes typing this whole thing out giving my opinions on a lot of unbalanced plant stuff in pvz heroes. thats about it.

It does not have splash damage, that would make it completely OP in Modern PVZ2 but it also makes it unviable for the endless modes there since the Zombies scale and you need Plants like Pokra or Winter Melon that have splash damage.

I'm glad somebody else agrees that the torchwood Jalapeneo attack is overkill and overtuned. Then again, you could argue that a lot of modern PVZ2 is just "here's an even more broken plant to take over the meta" every update, but the health increase and small melee attack at least makes sense for torchwood and is reasonable, you know? It felt like a step in the right direction, and then they made torchwood basically better guacadile and made snow pea more broken for kicks. It's just a really strange update I guess...

I remember one time during an arena season there was the frostbite caves zombot and I came up with the best idea ever, I put three torchwoods In the middle three lanes 1 mega gating pea for each, 1 fire pea in between them and the next plant to thaw them, and I think I put repeaters at the back and at the start of the level I would plant food the torchwoods and let everything else go to town on zomboss . Since lawnmowers regenerate in arena I didn't care about the outer 2 lanes because dealing damage to zomboss gave you the most points. I think I won every arena match that I used that strat.

This is a pet peeve of mine regarding torchwood in PvZ2 (and you somehow omitted it), that torchwood being premium plant felt so wrong was because that it was nerfed in 2. To be more specific, it was the splash ability (that you metioned) in PvZ1 that got removed in PvZ2, which made it purely a x2dmg multiplier for pea plants. I’d say giving pea shooters the ability to deal splash damage on top of the x2dmg is the reason why it is as good as it is in PvZ1, removing it is removing half of torchwood potential in PvZ2. Also, you did say that torchwood was perhaps weak against chicken wrangler, and well, I think maybe it wouldn’t be weak against that kind of zombie if torchwood also retains its splash ability.

You can just get it after a week of calendar prizes and it's like an Endurian Jalapeno.

Torchwood is a sinergy plant, which imo its extremely interesting because on these last days its getting more rare to see this things, and its a shame, because it helps to introduce other plants more smoothly and adds complexity to a game without needing a plant that has 3 secondary abilities.
Edit: A shame that It got buffed because acording to Modern PopCap a plant can't be good without having an only specific ability...

Which is ironic considering that Torchwood has 2 secondary abilities

@@fedethegreat88 I like the plant, not his buffs. Thats why I use It in mods and not in Vanilla
In fact Im gonna edit the original comment now that you mention It.

It got buffed cause it sucked. Though after Pea Vine was introduced, it might not have needed the buff anymore.

From what i hear its getting nerfed in the next update, theyre reducing the damage of fire peas to bosses and gargantuars, but giving it an aoe GRID ITEM to compensate. This grid item *can* hit the same target multiple times, but as a grid item, it can only stack once per tile, giving a pretty significant nerf to fire peas as most peashooters that are used shoot 3 (threepeater because of ease of access) or mega gatling pea (op)

it was perfect in pvz 1, health could've been higher, pvz 2 improved it greatly, making it have a less strong jalapeno effect when killed and do damage when zombies are eating it,, bit like endurian, and with the perma plant food buff, which let's be real on any plant is usually good, it is actually great now thanks to the plant food buff , it may be the price of fire pea, but sun isn't scarce in pvz 2 and literally twice as common, a sunflower only needs to make 1 sun to have a neutral r.o.i, and i knew this when i was very young, i breat pvz 2 when i was abt 8, going through the whole game without sunflower except when i HAD to like when sun doesn't fall. so yeah.

ngl but torchwood buff we good for it and other peashooters plants like peashooter, repeater, peapod.
Torchwood HP was need for it as its no longer need use wall/defensive plants Infront of it,the melee attack makes sense As how the zombies are eating it likes a normal plant.
Benig in appease-mint famliy makes sense? As almost every appease-mint plant synergies with torchwoond most of them are peashooters and even tumbleweed works with it.
