SHOCKING RESULTS! Should you use AI Chatbots for Genealogy?

  • We're tackling questions like: What are AI chatbots? What are the top chatbots? Are they private? Why are they free and will they stay free? Should you trust the results? Watch to the end to see the shocking results I received when using it for genealogy! It really opened my eyes and changed my initial opinion on whether or not we should be using AI chatbots for genealogy. Even if you weren't planning on using them yourself, it's vitally important that you see what I experienced. Other people are going to use this technology. They are going to be integrating their findings into what they share online, and you will inevitably come across that information. In this video, I mention ChatGBT. I meant to say Chat GPT which is the one from Open AI. There is a ChatGBT which uses the Open AI API, but it is not affiliated with them. Both are Chatbots. My focus in this video is in using Bard.

There is a good video by Blaine Bettinger called 10 GPT prompts for genealogists to use. The best prompts are in the form of (1) assume a role to (2) perform a task and (3) output the result into a specific format, such as a list or table.
One example was "extract the names from this obituary and output them into a bullet list."
    "Transcribe this will."
As you mentioned, though, if you ask for a "story" about your ancestor, it will provide fiction.

Lisa, Your experience with the "creative" side of AI is very instructive. As a person of "advanced years", shall we say, I have been slow to adopt new technologies, not because I don't understand them but because I have learned to be cautious. Thanks for taking the risk on our behalf.

while I enjoyed this video, I think it misses the point, unless the purpose is to point out that these "large language models" are not much good at searching. Their value is in editing already written text, doing OCR, organizing text (outlining, indexing, etc.) formatting text (such as arranging in a table), extracting text, such as looking at an obit and pulling out the facts and relationships, such as GenealogyBank does on some of their obits. It was super interesting that the chatbot replied to your accusation though!

The point of this video was that genealogists are asking whether they should use chatbots and we wanted to help explore that. They may be "large language models", but Google's Bard (the one we demonstrated) does pull from search results and they've stated that search is the beneficiary and reason for this technology.

Yes! I hope Lisa edits the video to correct that ... at least in the graphics that displayed "GBT" ... as I believe this video will have viewers for quite some time into the future.

" The facts in this collection were found using artificial intelligence technology and may contain errors. Learn more" This message popped up under an Ancestry Hint. Appalled but not surprised. They may have taught machines many things but not what "truth" means! Original records are what we need, not a computer's interpretation. Thanks for all your hard work!

Wow Lisa! That had to be shocking and infuriating! To be boldface lied to by a bot. Yikes! I was thinking it might be useful to get in-depth and specifics on history but NOPE. YIKES YIKES YIKES. And I am so glad you thought to respond to the Bot! I always come away from your videos with solid take always. Thank you. (From Not a Bot!)

I asked the Snapchat AI to show me the paintings of Henrik Ibsen. It kept insting he's not a painter. Finally I replied he's both a writer and a painter. At which point the AI replied it didn't know that, and couldn't show me any paintings. I'm not impressed!

I personally do not like chatting with robots and keep requesting to chat with a live person when dealing with companies. The fact that you can now have AI "write" for you raises many concerns for me about liability and intellectual property and what is not being read before it goes out to the public under someone's name. But I have to say that to call out a computer and have IT, a machine, admit that all it provided was fiction is indeed SHOCKING! And pretty creepy--Do we really want computers trained to CON us? It reminds me of the increasingly clever ways robocalls are using to get you to think there is a real person on the line, to get you to interact before they start their automated spiel. I personally do not see a need to use a bot to give me questionable assistance in my genealogy research. I appreciate you testing this out for us, Lisa, and keeping us up-to-date on genie buzz--thank you!

I guess I’m “old school” When it comes to trust or maybe it’s just that I never learned to trust as a child due to my background, but I have had things pop up that said transcribed by AI and I moved on without giving it a second glance because the transcriptions were always wrong! Thanks, Lisa for sharing this for those of us who may tend to be too trusting of things that are too easy.

Absolutely fascinating. I’ve found it useful for generating ideas or giving it specific tasks in other fields but have consistently found it to be wrong when asking for information. I correct it when I can and it appears to be relying on us to do so, yet many (most?) people probably take its answers at face value, reinforcing its erroneous answers. It had not occurred to me that it was actually testing us in the ways you’ve suggested, but it seems clear to me now, from what you’ve said and my limited experience, that that is the case. Bravo for your excellent analysis, the same aptitude makes you an incredible genealogist no doubt!

Those are large language models. They are fine for coming up with creative ideas, summaries of texts, scaffolding for writing etc. But not for search or accurate information. I have used it for creative writing brainstorming and am currently seeing if I can use them to write basic first draft biographies by feeding them the data that I’ve collected and verified… so far I’m not convinced that it is of any help with that apart from summing up the data into a chronological order.

An AI Chatbot is said to "hallucinate" when it generates a complete falsehood or is flat out wrong. Like yours, there have been some very interesting examples of this. It is acknowledged that the technology is a work in progress.

I asked PerplexityAI where the ships passport records are online for a certain area and found my ancestors record. That passport told me the exact area where he was born. So I found his birth, marriage, and his childrens birth records. Now I can trace the family line back.
