what a classic song. Great job

The Bangles, the way they're supposed to sound, with those 4 part harmonies and soft electric guitars and bass.
And when they go up a half note on that second verse, Susanna's higher pitched voice kicks in, and the entire harmony goes in crescendo till the end. Perfection. And this is not a recording but a live concert.
I've always wondered how it would sound in a top quality recording.
They could have been a hit band back in the 60s and joined the Beach Boys and The Mamas and the Papas to be counterweight to the British Invasion.
And even though Susanna is my Eternal Hearthrob, all four look absolutely stunning in this concert. Something about 40 year old women that are confortable in their own skin.

    • @vallipherson6453

Yes. There's also something about 40 year old men who are comfortable in their own skin....something about humans of any age who are comfortable in their own skin.

Great take by the song penned by Sylvia Fricker. Popularized by We Five in the 60's. Love the awesome harmonies but I still am partial to the powerful vocals of Bev Bivens of We Five's version.

Yes, Ian&Sylvia were coming from the end of the folk hootenanny era, and We Five were at the beginning of the so-called “folk-rock” era later epitomized by Linda Ronstadt and her backing band who would become The Eagles.

I don't remember the original (I'll have to listen to it) this is really good, all four singers are beautiful, I always had a crush on Debbie , and Be With You is my favorite Bangles song, it came out when I was a teenager, and I was out of touch with reality back then, When I use to see the video I use to think she was singing it to me, then a few years later reality hit me like a cruel jerk and realized she wasn't singing it to me, The Bangles really do sound good live, I never have sadly gone to see them in concert, but I'm glad I can at least get to enjoy it on TH-cam ,

I grew up to this song too so can exactly relate when they say they were 4 or 5 when they first heard it. Thier 4 part harmonies are better than the 3 dudes who backed the girl in the WE Five though. They should have put this on an album, their cover of ' Where were you when I needed you' by the Grass Roots is also outstanding.

@@jamiethornton6101 You are very fortunate, please tell them they are all adored. Aside from being great musicians in their own right, they really have such a great appreciation for and knowledge of music from other earlier generations, as this cover shows. They were also huge fans of Big Star , sort of college rock godfathers, who were so obscure only the most informed of musicians got them, REM,Teenage Fan Club and the Replacements also among those. They have the style down pat too, a Rickenbacker guitar even w a nod to the Byrds.
Susanna Hoffs has to be my favorite female singer, she still has the most beautiful voice and presence IMO. Best Regards.

A massively under rated, and highly talented group. I don’t know who managed them and lined up their gigs, but it should have been way better. Before “You Were On My Mind”, you can see the blond worried about her guitar being out of tune. I’ve been up there in the lights that heat wood and steel at different rates. The harder you play the harder it is to stay in tune. So you do your best to stay in tune, not only with your instrument but the others as well. So you wind up pushing through hoping it is not all that out of tune. Well done gals. 👍👍😎

Micki Steele told me how much she liked this song in 1982 or 1983. So I went home to the Hollywood Hills and got the single out. Drove over to her house late that night and put it in the mailbox so she would be surprised to get it when she got her mail the next day. It turned into a VERY hot day in Los Angeles so when she got her mail about noon she found the single in its sleeve in the mailbox but it was warped beyond belief. It looked more like an ashtray or a boomerang than a 45rpm recording.

They were creatures of their time and their time has passed. That's just the way it is with pop music. It's all a matter of taste and tastes change. Do you listen to Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Louie Armstrong or Duke Ellington?

Musicians, many of the, still listen to Duke Ellington and some of the others. Lots of rock drummers listened to Gene Krupa. Musicians tend to pay less attention to time and genre than the fans do.

Just more proof that the Bangles were/are the greatest girl group ever.

Saw them at The Channel in Boston in '87. For their encore they did a beautiful, sad, sailing version of the Grassroots' "Where Were You When I Needed You?"

I was and still am into rock and roll. Brought up on The Who and Stones, Lynrd Skynrd. But there was something about those girls. Talented and Hot. They were really good

This song was covered by "We Five". Best thing about We Five was the lead vocals by Beverly Bivens . Song was written by Sylvia Fricker.

I keep on coming back to revisiting anything from the 70s to the millennium as things after that are just uninspiring.
