How to reload the 6.5 mm creedmoor taking once fired Hornady 6.5 creedmoor Brass, decapping, resizing, and loading. This is the first time reloading rounds For the 65 creedmoor These will be for how I do barrel break in and fouling the new barrel in the Uintah Precision UPR10 bolt Action AR-10 upper. Bullet for the 6.5 creedmoor I’m sendung Hornady 140 grain ELD-Match Bullets over Federal Gold medal match primers and powder is H4831SC which is not as fast as reloading with Hodgdon H4350 but they are very accurate Precision reloads.

You mentioned setting the seating die based on a previously loaded round. I like to set up a dummy round for each of my often-loaded rounds. I will seat a bullet in an empty case and leave it on the bench, or in the box with the dies, with the desired OAL written on it. I then throw that in the press when setting up the seating die for that particular bullet & load. I've found, like you, that I usually need to adjust the seating stem another couple thousandths beyond to get the right OAL.
That is a great suggestion from an experienced and wise reloader! I usually do have a few rounds on my bench loaded with my bullets so I 100% agree. Thanks for the tip I hope people read this and learn!

I'm very excited to get going with my 6.5 Creedmoor reloading and I am in process of gathering what I need. Just made a stop two days ago at my local reloading store and picked up a few boxes of factory ammo, bullets, and powder. Today I just ordered some brass and tomorrow I plan on ordering my dies. Looking forward to how the 140 gr. Hornady's shoot for you. I did pick up a box of those and one of my factory loads also has the 140 gr. ELD Match bullets. Excellent basics video! It's always good to see everyone's procedures as it helps me refine my own.

West Desert Shooter I hear you about the ammo costs, but I found some decently priced ammo. Maybe I'll do a short video on what I picked up. As low as $17.99 a box, regular price at my favorite reloading store. I haven't made up my mind completely on dies yet, but am leaning towards Redding. I have mostly Lee and one set of RCBS, but have never tried some of the others.
H4350 all the way for the 6.5 CM, my RPR spits them out beautifully with 41gn. to 42.5gn.and CCI PR2 or Magnum primers.

If you don’t already know this a good way to get all the media out of that brass is to leave the Tumblr on and kind of put that shell on the side of the rim and it’ll kind of vibrate everything out

Just bought a press, tumbler, primer, scale, etc. Etc.. learning from TH-cam though as the only person I knew that reloaded was my grandpa and unfortunately he's no longer with us.
Wish I was old enough when he was here to learn from him, he used to bring his portable bench to the range with him and loaded as he shot.
Edit: just noticed ur avatar n see u ride! I do as well lol, got a couple old videos of me at GMR in socal (famous canyon). Moved to outside Houston now so don't get to enjoy those awesome canyons anymore but COTA is a few hours away as well as MSR Houston so only track it now which is probably better anyway. So you must be a pretty cool guy considering your hobbies 😎😄

Accuracy tip I use: Deburr the flash hole inside the case. It makes a small yet noticeable increase in accuracy. Only have to do it once and then you're good to go. Works on all rifle brass, not necessary on typical handgun brass (9mm, 357 Mag, 45 ACP, etc). Several manufacturers such as Lyman, RCBS, Redding, and Hornady make the tool.
In order to do this I deprime the case with a Lee decapper tool (I make my own decapper pin out of a #10 drill bit since the carbide pin in the decapper made by Lee breaks too easily).
Also, while I have a tumbler I seldom use it. I wash the cases in a bucket, using hot water with some dish soap and a few slugs of white vinegar. Works especially well after flash hole deburr and case try, gets the cases clean inside and out. Rinse twice in hot water to get all the soap out. Just put the cases on an old towel in the sun to dry out. Store in an airtight container after drying so they won't tarnish.

Good info. I always weigh my cases after I do a powder charge to make sure I didn't accidentally overcharge.
I used to think reloading was a science until I started doing it myself and realized that it's pretty easy. I just reuse the brass from whatever ammo is cheapest (usually federal). Whinchester primers, ramshot big game (which I think is their version of 4350)40-41gr give or take and 140 hornedy bullet. Round length 2.759 with no crimp. From 100 yards I can cover 4 shots with a dime. Only took 3 shots to hit 22 in target at a 1000. Using a RPR 6.5 creedmoor with a swfa 10x42.
It is a science but someone else has already done the hard part making the Reloading manuals. Stick close to them and it’s really not that tough. Sounds like you got it figured out man
West Desert Shooter I agree 100%. If you're a competitor looking to shoot 5 rounds through a single hole or hit a tight group at 1000, there's a lot of tweaking for that kind of perfection. But for a weekend shooter out to plink some steel at 600-1000,not too hard.

I always give the cases a good wipe after resizing to get the lube off, this also removes a lot of crap from the outside of the neck and keeps the tumbling medium from getting dirty quickly. One Shot is the best lube ever. I’m using IMR 4166 at 35gr which works well with Hornady 140gr ELDs and 130gr Sierra TMKs giving 2550 and 2600 ft/s respectively, you don’t need to go any faster. When setting up my seating die, I place my brass in the brass holder then run it all the way up then lower the die as far down till it hits the brass then back out a half to 3/4 turn, then I put the bullet in and set the seating, Then set my crimp. Never tried it this way but as long as it works.

For safety the powder your loading should be the only powder container on the bench. Also as I take my cases out of the tumbler I put each case in the head space gauge to make sure they were resized right.

FYI: I added some old .55gr bullets to the bottom of the Hornady trickler and covered it with duct tape to give it some stability. Filled it about halfway up. Anything with weight will work.
Also bought some cheap funnels from Dollar store and cut the ends off and glued them inside Hornady funnels so there is very little movement when the funnel is slid over top of casing. Did this for my 6.5cm and especially the .223 casing that wobbles a lot. Now when I slide funnel over casing it fits very tight but not so tight that funnel can't easily slide off.

I have only been reloading for a couple of weeks (same press and everything that you have) and I have got to say, RCBS Universal Hand Priming Tool has been the absolute best $65 I have spent so far for the reloading table. I was not getting great results with the press mounted priming system and that hand primer has made a world of difference. Not having to swap out shell holders is also really awesome if you reload multiple calibers!

Started reloading 6.5 CM couple weeks ago. I find if I used small rifle primers, the powder charge needs to be about 1 grain more than load data suggests, got couple hang fires just like Johnny Reloading experienced in his video series. The published load data all assume large rifle primers.

I got .280 group @ 100yds using reloader 16 powder, hornady 140gr BTHP match bullets and random brass reloaded from match grade factory ammo.
Hybrid 100v is my first choice for 140gr 6.5 Creedmoor. Better velocity than H4350 and just as accurate. I have seen a lot of people that say they didn't get good accuracy with Hybrid100v but all of my rifles shoot well with it.
I forgot why I bought the Rock Chucker until last night. Resizing once fired range brass. Some of those case I am hanging on the lever going down and mucel man lifting the lever back up. Rock chucker is a beast. Got 200 shells sized last night. New gun going to the range tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
When loading powder in the cases, I just put a bullet inverted in the case I just filled, before going on to the next.
That way, I avoid making a mess if I double charge a case inadvertently.

Leave the tumbler running and hold the cleaned cases upside down against the edge of the bowl to vibrate the media out of the case

Thanks for sharing you experience , i do the same for primers But ! i did a test last week i loaded two brass with only a primer and filled the case , one with water the second with clp. waited 24 hours empty the case and chamber the cases in the rifle, and squeeze the trigger in a safety direction, both went boom and loud. kind of surprising
Yes, I have tested since this video as well and have gotten them to detonate. My suggestion these days is put them in an old water bottle with some water in it and throw it away while in the bottle and water

The 100v is my go to powder for the 6.5 I get better groups and higher velocity with it. 42.6gr in starline brass WLR primer and 140gr nosler rdf is going 2870fps with no pressure. Might work good with your hornady bullet too.
Great video, but I use a pipe cleaner to clean out media from my primer holes. Very effective.

What equipment do you have, where did you get it from, and what was the cost? I'm looking to start with some basic equipment and it looks like you have a really good system that works.
Watch the tips of the bullets coming out of the seating die. The Lee die wants to leave a little ring around the bullet just below the tip. I put a tiny corner of a paper towel in the seating stem. This will cushion the bullet. I haven't had any issues with the overall length by doing this. There are different stems you can buy, but they only work in Hornady dies.
Yes, I did notice that and its unfortunate, I just try to be gentle on the upstroke before it comes in contact with the bullet and seating die. I will try your trick! Ill let you know how that goes
Close enough works for me as well. The only one I completely handload are my 10g 300 blackout Subsonic rounds. But everything from my .45 to 5.56 is "close" Appreciate the video Sir!
Good video. I like Lee too. Resizing dirty brass is not that good for your Lee dies. I first use the univ decap from Lee.I do a first quick clean with the ultrasonic. ( i use the solution that was used for removing the oil from the resized brass). I anneal every 4 reloads for de CM6,5 (brass must be clean). ps. i never used a primer pocket cleaner.(no need),thanks for vid

You said you dont have a fired piece of brass to find out the headspace, but all the brass you have is once fired and fireformed. Did you shoot that brass in a different gun???
Suggestion: If you're going to use a press to seat the primers, buy primer tube that attaches to the press. You can put a dozen or more primers in the tube for nearly an automated priming. A better way to seat the primers is not to use a press but with a hand press primer seater. A hand primer seater allows you to feel the primer going into the primer pocket and will allow a better control of the primer seating depth.
You're reloading method is good but it's not tailored specifically to your gun. You should look into neck sizing die and use the neck sizing die on your chamber fire-formed brass of you gun. The fire-formed brass is specific to your gun, and, in general, if you do your part correctly, along with the bullet seating depth, will be more accurate than than the factory or your previously made reloaded round.

One small detail you're forgetting Tyrone with just neck-sizing. Yes, it's true you're getting fire-formed brass specifically for your gun, however you neglected to mention shoulder bumping. Agree partially on the priming. Priming tube is nice and if you've reloaded more than a couple rounds, you get to know your press pretty well and know what's right and what's wrong by feel.

Did you have to drill the lee seating stem to avoid damage to the bullet close to the plastic tip? Been hearing people having issues with eldx and eld bullets. Ill see what happens once i have my all my tools to do my first reload.

easiest and less messy way to lube your cases,use a zip-lock.Put them in there,spray them and move them around by hand.Less of a mess and you use less lube.
If you use once fired from a different rifle would you use a small base die?

Hodgdon does not recommended using small primers for any large rifle! Researched it and found no significant data that small primers are more accurate. Might be great if you have a constant temp of 90℉
...and Chevrolet does not recommend driving a Corvette above 65mph either. The main reason for switching from large primer pocket to small primer pocket is brass life, that is assuming you're reloading your own brass. The first thing that will go on any piece of brass is going to be the primer pocket. Having the smaller primer pocket means it has a smaller hole and thus has more brass which helps it maintain it's rigidity a wee bit longer. At least that's the theory. Might get you one maybe two more reloads on a piece of brass. At least that's the consensus amongst 25 of the top 30 competition long range shooters. I personally have shot both small primer and large primer and there's not much of a difference in accuracy like you said. Some believe the small (magnum) primers will burn more consistent. Just my 2 cents..

RCBS BENCH MOUNT PRIMER IS THE WAY TO GO WITH IT THERE IS NO FINGER CONTACT, AND YOU CAN LOAD UP TO 100 AT A TIME AND VERY EASY ON THE HANDS, I USE TO LOAD SLOW LIKE YOUR DOING HERE 25 YEARS AGO I WENT TO POWER POWDER DUMPS LIKE THE RCBS 1500 AND I HAVE NOT LOOKED BACK SINCE, WELL ANYWAY LOADING SLOW LIKE YOUR DOING IS A GOOD WAY TO START OUT ONCE YOU LEARN IT YOU CAN SPEED UP THE PROGRAM, GOOD LUCK IF YA HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SOMETHING LET ME KNOW I TRY TO HELP YOU OUT. I use the universal decapping die from Lee and then wet tumble.
After that I use a Lee resizing die and since the primer is already out I just removed the decapping pin....
An extra step but I don't mind since I don't make a whole bunch of cartridges.

FYI: I make primers for a living , double check the primer , using magnify glass and light , not all primers pass Quality test , before they’re sent out .
Check the mix, make sure the mix is evenly distribute inside the cup, and the anvil sitting is center and not side way or off set
Set my primers w tweezers with masking tape on the tips. Good grip, no possibility of body oils contaminating the primers.
I get why but of the couple thousand rounds I’ve made just grabbing primers I’ve had one fail. And that could’ve just been a bad primer. Do what you want but I’ve had really good luck so far.
West Desert Shooter , Your lucky your not a klutz like I am. Handing thoes lil suckers is hard! Cant count the ones i dropped into the carpet. 😁 Kinda like the hand presses too w the shaker pans on em. Seems to give a better "feel" when setting the depth. Like to set mine just slightly below flush when i run my finger across em. Was told that sets a "preload" on the primers for positive ignition because the cup is set tight on the bottom of the primer hole. Never had a misfire doing that. Also do an inside primer hole ream to eliminate the lil "tang" from the factory primer hole punch, leaving a slighty reamed out flared "cone" inside, THAT really improved my velocity spreads. Was told that inner cone shape shoots the primer flame out in a fan shape more consistently across the bottom of the powder charge ignighting the powder from bottom to top better. Seems to work. ESPECIALLY w 44 mag & 45/70 loads maxed out for big bear loads. (Live in Alaska bush & we have freikin bears EVERYWHERE!) The inside reaming does increase the size of the flash hole a bit but that never seemed to hurt & maybe even improve powder ignition.
Awesome video. I'm just starting to reload 6.5 so this was very helpful. Question, after tumble cleaning with dry media and pushing out stuck pieces from primer pockets, does it matter if there's some residue from the media inside the case?

Get the lee primmer. You will wonder why you did not do it sooner. I have mine mounted on a cedar picket that's long enough to lay on my lap. It makes it so I can sit almost anywhere and load primers.

I mostly stick to TH-cam and the reloaders network. You will find the people who want to share and help, not dick measure over velocities and powder charges. Definitely a great source of info!
