- October 31, 2011 - A short list of things you can do in preparation for a hurdle day. There's a 1001 things one can do and this is simply one combo I like to use with my athletes and myself.
1. Hurdle Walk overs
2. Sideways hurdle skip over middle
3. Lead/ Trail skips over the sides
4. Over the top hurdle skip/ hurdlers hurdle hops
5. Short Approach - in place bounce (step one aka energy step, 2, 3 hurdle through Women 30/33 inch barrier Men: 39/42 inch barrier
Once you've done this, you can do more prep if needed lead leg/ trail leg/ over the step 5-step drilling.
great videos! i'm going to try the last thing you mentioned, the bounce. I'm good at 300m hurdles but I still usually stutter somewhere within the last 100m, and as for 100m hurdlers I don't even run because I can't get my body to 3-step and take that big leap. hopefully that will help out, thanks for the slo-mo too, it helps a lot.
@teereesejr Okay, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I think that helps a lot with takeoff angle into the hurdle too and the ability to adjust when coming up too quick on a hurdle. I find that when I leave my hips behind me its harder for me to drive my knee up quick enough to adjust to a hurdle I feel is rushing up at me. When I push my hips forward the lead knee drives up a lot quicker allowing me to clear a hurdle I might have otherwise ran around or crashed or what have you.
I find all your drills and videos to be very useful, i especially like that short approach drill you did at the end of this video! I am going to try to use it today in my drills! I'm so glad i subscribed to you dude! Also, do you have any workout for the 400m hurdles?
@teereesejr That's not something my coaches ever really pay attention to. But thanks a lot for the advice, I'll definitely keep that in mind going forward.
When you talk about breaking your hips doing the lead leg drill can you elaborate a little. Is that just a constant effort on your part to keep your hips tall into the hurdle. Sinking into my hips is something I've noticed I do and im trying to correct. When I do it right, it feels better but a lot of times its hit and miss. So just trying to find a good drill to work it out. Any other drills you know for keeping your hips into the hurdle beside just repping it out (which is waht im doin now)
Great video! but i must know the song!!
