  • It's one of the most advanced mechanical timing systems ever created: the The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher. Understanding it takes a little work, but lucky you - we got Giulio Papi, the brilliant complications specialist who actually designed it, to explain to you just how it works its magic. Wonderful craftsmanship. Not a watch I would like to own, but it's interesting to see watchmakers pushing the envelope.

    An astounding movement, Watching the chrono being engaged through the caseback would keep me happy for months.

    I have absolutely no idea how does that work or what it measures but the "want and need" factor is growing

    The engineering is seriously on an alien level the assembly of these machines must be insane.....

    Lovely craftsmanship and design. Very impressive with the two second hands to compare the lap timing but I was left wondering if MS ever actually used one in a race? I assume he didn't or it would have been mentioned in the video.

    I've been thinking about this one for quite some time , and I think I'm beginning to like it , not in an aesthetic way but out of a technical viewpoint . I think it is best quoted by Wilhelm Schmid : "But what we learn form one watch will help us develop the rest", from "The A. Lange & Söhne Grand Complication " By HODINKEE in 2013 . This piece is an important technical innovation in the sense that the company builds up the know how , on how to produce a complication like this in larger quantities. Just imagine a classic looking Royal Oak chronograph with a laptimer ?

    I'm just seriously confused as to why they'd make a see-through dial. The second's hand blends right in with the mechanics of the watch and -- if anyone is REALLY going to take this on the F1 track -- will be practically invisible in the middle of a lap...

    • @BakersTaste
      @BakersTaste 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nick K 1. why in God's name would one take a (probably) 500,000 dollar watch on an f1 track? (only f1 drivers can drive f1. no dumb rich guy can just get into one)
      2. this is not a serious piece. to time f1 is not the point. its for someone who wants to say "ooo look i have a laptimer man!" not to seriously take a lap time.

    • @sultanabran1
      @sultanabran1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick K no one is actually going to use this as a laptimer. it was an idea that michael schumacher gave. traditional manufacturers like AP, Patek Philippe, IWC Shaffhausen don't make timepieces like these to be used, they make them to keep the tradition of watch making alive. without invention, the know-how in a company will die. they invent new movements so that this generation can learn 'how to do it' and not just reproduce existing movements. these timepieces are showcases for know-how and to pass tradition, experience, knowledge etc to the next generation.

    People hate this because Zenith never got the fame associated to actually get the idea to make a mechanism like this. If it were the same as Zenith's standard, it would never have gotten into GPHG finals, Zenith was and still is filled with old hags and 1960s

    • @pat81689
      @pat81689 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      StanO011 Hublot actually copied the AP Royal Oak form.

    • @csabarikk9525
      @csabarikk9525 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      StanO011 well technically Jean-Claude Biver established Hublot but before that he worked at AP, but he explains it in the talking watches video which Ben did with him, so i suggest checking that :) cheers

    • @BakersTaste
      @BakersTaste 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      StanO011 yes exactly as Csaba Rikk says, Biver took the design of the royal oak on purpose because it is just so awesome and recognisable.

    How is this different from a rataprantte/split seconds?

    • @ofahlstrom
      @ofahlstrom 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a split seconds chronograph one of the hands is continuously running while the other one can be stopped and then made to catch up with the "main" seconds hand. Here, however, using the lap timer function stops the running seconds hand and starts a new sequence from 0 with the other one. It's basically two stop watches in one. Stopping one resets and starts the other.

    Way hard to read when you drive a high speed car ! You need a clear dial you can glance at ! This watch is not it.
