I remember years ago Ray saying in an interview that he was a novice boxer. 88 fights and only 8 losses is bloody impressive, just shows how modest he is, proper gent.

@Winterwood768-yx9kx That shows how good Winstone was. It would have been much easier to give it to someone with a Glasgow accent because it carries so much gravitas for a hard-man role. To be believable with a Southern/London accent back then as a hard-man, was a tougher job, but Ray passed with flying colours!

@@mattlegg1976 Not trying to be a dick her Matt and the poster you are replying to wrote Winston (as in Churchill) and you pronounced it like that in your introduction, but you spell Ray's name Winstone (as in made of stone), and so I think that the second syllable of his surname is pronounced as -stone.
I might be wrong though, so perhaps you can ask him if ever in his company again and might even earn some Brownie points if he was too politic to say anything previously, or if you have a mutual friend or contact then maybe ask them instead.

Great to watch. Old school chaps reminds me of my childhood growing up around my dad and his mates. Sitting in the back of his London black cab on the floor looking up at these characters. Clean shaven, nice suits smell of aftershave and booze 🤣 the last of a memorable era. Thanks matt.

Was on same show as ray in the 70s. He Was a very good boxer...also what was said about nice guy boxers. I've not meet many bad ones in boxing gyms in my time.
I still have a move about now in my mid 60s ... albeit a slow move about 😂😂😂😂 great chat matt.

@mattlegg1976 got to keep trying mate 😆 it's funny but after all these years I get in the boxing gym and all my worrys go away and most times it's me and the bag ( I often go before any normal people are up 😆) once a week I have a spar with a fellow old git 😀 and mate I absolutely love it and get massive withdrawal symptoms if I don't train at least twice a week but i do try to do at least 3 sessions .. feck this getting old 😆 🤣 😂 I can see myself being pushed in my wheelchair to the gym in a few years

Ray Winstone went to the same school as me Edmonton County, he was a few years older than me saw him when he was a short blond haired kid bowling down Edmonton as if he owned it cos he just don the Borstal movie .He also remembers my Physics teacher Mr Povey cos he mentions his name on the Jonathan Ross Show as a great teacher and he was a pretty good teacher he was very fair but you didn't want to mess with him hed rough you up a bit ...I got 95% in Physics second in the class because of him

I remember Ray saying a bit about amateur boxing as a lad, had no idea he had 88 bouts!
And, showing our bloody age again (or mine!) my fav was Robinson, l even knew what Ray was saying about KOing his opponent moving backwards! Sweetest left hook!!!
Also, lm not the biggest fan of pressers...gd fighters put arses on seats, you go to watch the fights, not two blokes slag ea other off... but just my opinion.
Pity you didn't get Eddie on tape mate, these fellas don't last forever.

Thank you Matt for another great video. Have followed Ray's career since his role in 'Scum' and I have really enjoyed watching him in his many films and TV. To think he was an amateur boxer kind of doesn't surprise me. Loved the story of the Richardsons and I have respect for what they used to be, cos they kept the London streets safe for law abiding memebers of the public. There certainly wasn't the street crime and mindless stabbings that there is today.

I read that Ray wasnt going to het the part in acum ,but they changed their mind when they saw him bopping out after the audition . Got a few mates who box and they all have a certain confident bop/walk to them .
That's right, he was with his mates who were auditioning, and he got spotted, lol

Enjoyed that video very much. My long-time old friend Charlie Braker/Breaker, would normally be present at such events but he suffered a stroke. He is recovering well and uses a mobility scooter to get to the bar. Can't keep a good man down. 👊

That cliff fileds story reminded me a story my dad told me - He turned up first day at building site, the head guy asked him to go to the shops to get some food and drinks for himself and the other few workers, so the guy gave him a 20 pound note ( a lot 40 years ago) and reeled off the list to get, then told my dad to get whatever he wanted too, so my dad come back and along with the drinks and food, he had bought himself a Ben Sherman Shirt 😂😂

Thank you Matt, great production (another antidote to the world of woke). Favourite comment: You like Tyson? "I do, but I suppose I like the craft of it" One line from an English man of class, speaks volumes. It tells you he knows his stuff. He personally prefers Leonard to Tyson. He isnt frothing at the mouth just to see one big bloke get knocked out. He's interested in the art, the heart, how the battle unfolds, the psyching out, how each fighter reacts when their on top, or close to the end, or something unexpected happens. Can he still think when he's being pushed around? Can he pull back when he's on top and being led into a trap? Has he got plan B, C, D?
Leonard had the biggest heart. Tyson was the only unstoppable fighter IMO (before King set him up with Delilah), I dont think there is anyone else in his category.
I had no idea the great Ray Winstone was a fighter, read him all wrong, thought he was a tough guy on TV only. 80 / 88 wins impressive. Then he says he didnt go pro because he knew he wasnt good enough (at what level?), a pro has to have something inside, a special gift. He's right, and he is smart enough to know you need it ALL, and strong levers, not easily cut, and good recovery from injuries.
Maybe boxers are encouraged to trash talk because MMA doesnt have the honour and respect that exists in boxing, so the promoters had to knock boxing off its pedestal? (MMA is a far more complete fighting system, noone doubts that). Ray Winstone is also correct on this, trash talking doesn't suit boxing, it is rare that boxers don't respect each other for what they do. It DOES leave a stain, as he says.
Sexy Beast is an excellent film, Ben Kingsley knows the psychopath well.

Those old school guys are real gentlemen and respect each other in the fighting game. Nowadays there is a lot more bad talk at press conferencies and maybe the fighters are told to do that to sell more tickets, but I think it's bad for the sport

Would be great if you could do a sit-down interview with Eddie Richardson,i'm 62 and from Peckham so i've heard a lot of stories cos one of my mates his dad was on the payroll for them so he said one day "do ya wsnna go to a party?" we woz little kids in the 60's so me and my mate's dad took us one sunday to the "surrey docks tavern" and there wrre some kids there havin a party for one of the firm's sons he was about the same age as us 5 or 6 and we had a great time. was told muck.h later by mate's old man that they were all there,Charlie and Eddie,the old man,fraser,even George Cornell before he was topped.
