Beginner here, in the process of understanding and learning the SP. Just discovered your channel yesterday. Not only does your work blow my mind and break my neck, also you made me going a giant leap forward in my learning. Thank you! Watching your videos is the best tutorial I found so far!
Haha dope man, been seeing your comments today (I’m behind on that…), sp404 learning curve starts steep but once you find your workflow it’s all gravy. Cheeeers!
Great vid! Helped a lot, thanks! One thing: For the mute trick at 5:30 to work your SP must be set up accordingly - mine wasnt. To set it up go to EFX SETTING (shift + pad 16), scroll all the way to the right with the CTRL 3 knob and set „Mute Bus“ to BUS instead of ALL.
Wow! The best FX explanation video I’ve seen so far 😎 Clarified a lot… not overly complicating things, but straightforward and to the point 👍🏻 Also the subtle visual cues for routing and corresponding to the actual pad colors, demonstrates that you know how to transfer knowledge 👌🏻 Some practical examples and bonus tips… thanks for these valuable 9 minutes on learning the SP 🙏🏻
Thanks heaps for the kind words! I was pretty stoked when I figured out I could do the colour route path thing in the video, seemed logical…glad it helped demystify bus routing, cheers!
You've outdone yourself with the excellent details in this tutorial fam, thank for the close up on the screen, and for really breaking it down! Great job bro, much appreciated!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Can't remember if you showed this in video, but the shortcut to toggle Bus 3 & 4 on/off without menu diving is to: press and hold [value] knob and tap [Bus FX] pad. This is different from Mute Bus and bypass.
Thanks mate, glad it helped. One thing I like to do with beat sets is, for example, with beat 1 set to bus1 n beat 2 to bus2 then beat 3 to bus1 etc…this lets you do delays or djfx or filter stuff to end on beat to transition into the next without the effect being on the next (bus config in parallel mode)
Finally got my mkii after waiting for our 4 month backorder to clear, I’m grateful that this video exists to better understand this animal. Thank you so much for your work!

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I have had this for about a year now and really still wonder why Roland designed it this way. Not the easiest routing at least for me and I have used the 808 for years and have applied simple effects to my samples.
Thanks for this one. I just bought this amazing sounding sp404mk2 4 days ago. I've been on it experimenting nonstop, and your tutorials have been a great help. This is not an mpc. Hello my friend we haven't talked in a while, I've been on a TH-cam break. I came back to check this out to add it to my workflow. You do an amazing job of explaining and breaking stuff down, and I appreciate what you bring to the community my brother!!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Thanks heaps man, much appreciated as always! Something that might be down your alley would be running your mpc into the mk2 like you do, assign JUST Ext Source to Bus 1 and all the mk2 samples (vocal chops etc) to Bus 2 - then set Bus Fx to Parallel mode so you can put wild delays on the vox stuff then do djfx type stuff on just the MPC.
@Nonjuror 🔥🔥🔥You just blew my mind bro!!! I researched this video because lately I've running the outs of the MK2 into inputs 3/4 of the MPC X SE, and when I turn the monitor of the sampler, I can hear the beat of the MPC, and Vox fx of the MK2, am I doing it correctly?? I'm going to try what you just said now, but how do I get it to Parallel.. by clicking the knob? Also.. I've seen DiBiase use Bus 3 and 4 with vinyl Sim 303 and compression as the anchor of everything, so to speak. I'm really trying to marry these two, and rock out!🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Yep, parallel mode by clicking the knob (2:43). Don’t quote be but think Dibi connects his MPC (or whatever damn thing he’s conquering) outputs to the MK2’s line in so he can put the bus 3/4 effects on the MPC’s beats and use it as his computer’s interface to record the beat into his DAW…I think…
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my brother!!! On your Bus 3 and 4, do you always keep all the levels of Compression on zero? I'm gonna experiment more on my break away from the channel!🙏🏾✊🏾💚

Cheers for checking out the vid! Yeah, the Bus workflow is unique thing on this thing, once you’re comfortable with the different ways to work it it’s really awesome.
Thanks for the video. Is there a way to a two or more different Effect on different pads. Eg. a filter on pad 1 then a looper on pad 2 and compression on pad 3 all playing at the same time.
Great video! Just one question, I don't fully understand how to save the effects on bus1 and bus2 so that every time I turn on the SP, just by pressing the "Bus FX" pad, all the 5 default effects of each bus are loaded, that is to say ( in total the 10 effects on both buses). Because when I do it and change the bus, the same effects remain on bus1 and bus 2, that is, only 5.
Great vid. Thank you. How do you keep the fx page up? It keeps leaving the screen back to the BPM after a short amt. of time. thanks EDIT: Found it hit REMAIN then the FX button. It then stays on screen.
Helpful video , thank you. One thing I’m still confused about is the “favorites” though. When I go in to select bus 3 and 4, it tells me to select a favorite. But they aren’t setup, they are all empty and won’t let you select them. So i can’t find any material on how to edit the favorites or set that all up. Basically anything about “favorites” in the bus effects trips me up and I get so frustrated. Any help out there ?
Hmmm interesting…so basically what I do is open Effect Settings, turn the Enter knob which should start scrolling thru the favourites (1-12 have presets already but can be changed, 13 onwards are blank), you have to select one of them - it can’t still be set to “bypass”, then use control 3 to change tabs to Bus 3 or 4. When you first change tabs, turning the Enter knob moves the curser up and down, with the curser on “EFX Type” push in Enter - the effect is now highlighted, turn the Enter knob to scroll thru fx then push in Enter again to select it. With the curser now free to move again, scroll down to over the effect’s settings and use controls 1-3 to change them. Hope that helps!
Hey thanks so much for it. I just havent succesfully muted the bus2. When im pressing shift plus mute bus it mutes both buses , what am i missing please?
Hey I’m really new to samplers. Wondering if you know if there is a way to route the click out to the headphone jack but not the main outs? Would like to use this with a band similar to the spd-sx but I like the smaller size of this.
Nice one as always. I have been using the effects quite similarly. I’m hoping you do a video on the new pad mutes soon! I’d definitely like to know your workflow with this. BTW, I finished my first full track on the SP, up on my channel. I did a bit of a dub session, and sampled myself playing organ, guitar, and did some vocals. Great learning experience. I totally screwed up the guitar levels, but you live and you learn. I made the mistake of sampling it in mix and should have kept it separate so that I could go back and fix the mix when I finished the rest of the parts of the song. I’ll definitely sort it out next time though. Anyway, thanks for all the tutorials. Definitely helping.
That organ sounds wicked, I didn’t realize it was live - sick! You nailed the fx on the jam too, those delays are on point. Portastudios are the best, I started on my brother’s 244 when I was a kid.
Hi bro. When I press shift+bus fx, both buses are muted, the message "BUS 1&2" appears, do you know why? (firmware 2.01). Greetings and thanks for the info!!!
So if I’m right, if I have my drums in Bus 1 with a filter on it, and I have my sample in Bus 2 with an isolator on it, I can’t use FX like the DJFX Looper to be active on the full beat? Should I resample everything to make space for the effects? Thanks for this amazing tutorial btw!
I would always do the resample thing just to lock in to be aafe, so, like you said if you want easy access to DJFX Looper while jamming on the beat you couldn’t have fx already on Buses 1 & 2….BUT that doesn’t mean it’s not possible coz you can have DJFX Looper as Bus 3 or 4. It’s a little trickier to get to obviously but if you in a situation where you need filter on bus 1 drums n iso on bus 2 samples it is still possible to control DJFX from Bus 3 or 4 in Effect Settings. Great question man.
Another fantastic video man! For real. Amazing. Silly question though. Do you think there is a way to isolate the sampling input from the output? The idea is to allow the MK2 to utilize resampling of external stereo effects without a feedback loop occurring. Pretty much kill the EXT IN from going out the main out. Just monitoring through your headphones both signals. Just a thought I had for some external effects loops.
I know what you mean, like you want to send a sample for example to a wah pedal and then sample it on the way back. I’ve never done such a thing and I’m honestly not sure if you can BUT I’ve also never use the “CUE” mixing function (Shift +3), this (from my limited understanding) would would allow you so send a sample from a pad (or pads) to JUST the headphones out and NOT the Line Out at the back…it may be possible doing it this way. Of course you would then need to find a way to listen to what’s coming back into the mk2 via the Line Out which is no big deal. Maybe peep the “Monitoring with Headphone (Cue)” - this might be crazy enough to work…
@@Nonjuror holy crap!! Didn't even know there was a cue feature. That is exactly what I was after. Going to try this. You nailed the concept explanation too. Exactly the same page I was on.
@@Nonjuror I'll keep playing around with it but I don't think with the current firmware version it is going to work. Seems like an update could fix this though. Right now Cue works to preview an already sampled location. What we need is; 1-Monitor EXT IN through CUE (not main outside) 2- Enable re-sampling to new pad through CUE in 3- Enable sample triggering through main outs while in this new "ReSample Cue" mode Has some potential to be a great feature.
Man, thank you for breaking all of this down! I'm wondering if you have a video(s) that would explain the process of using bus effects with the ext source (running beats from another sampler thru the sp as an effects processor)?
Thanks for checking it out! It’s actually exactly the same as everything in this video - the Ext Source is by default Bus 1, like the pads you can hold Remain to bypass or select Bus 2 (…etc). Just plug it in n go, more or less. I guess if it’s an iOS device you can connect via usb too.
@@Nonjuror Awesome! Thank you! I was so confused about assigning buses until I watched this video! I hope Roland is sending you a paycheck at this point
Haha hopefully one day they’ll put me on the payroll. I use the mk2 a lot with my mpc60ii (which has no fx), I run the samples thru the mk2 Ext In for fx and leave the drums on the output and record them all into my DAW on separate channels (1/2 mpc drums, 3/4 404 fx on samples)…
Great vid. Is it possible to assign the inputs to separate bus fx? For example, a guitar plugged into the mic/inst input to bus 1 and a drum machine through the rca input to bus 2?
Hmm…I haven seen what happens when you run something thru the mic input n line in at the same time, I don’t think they can be separated, I know what you’re aiming for but I don’t think so, sadly…
Thanks for this video, I learned a lot of thing, but I don't know why when I'm pushing enter in the efx settings, nothing happen :O someone have an idea ?
Resampling different samples with different effects has really opened a rabbit hole for me...thanks for the explanations! Great video!

Awesome job, thanks man!!
Appreciate you checking it out, cheers! 🍺🍺🍺🍺

Is there fx send level for each pad? Or you can only torn on/off fx send to bus?
Hey thanks so much for it. I just havent succesfully muted the bus2. When im pressing shift plus mute bus it mutes both buses , what am i missing please?
Easily fixed, go to EFX Settings/Other and change Mute Bus to BUS instead of ALL.
You are the 🐐
Cheers fam! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Love your logo, how did you print it? Design it, font wise
Nice video! How lovely wouldn’t it be to have a colorscreen?
Thanks! Would be wild, esp having like 4-bit startup images
Hi bro. When I press shift+bus fx, both buses are muted, the message "BUS 1&2" appears, do you know why? (firmware 2.01). Greetings and thanks for the info!!!
Easy as, Shift+16 for Efx Settings, Scroll to Other tab, change Mute Bus from “All” to “Bus”. That should do the trick!
Let me know how it goes!
@@Nonjuror I'll keep playing around with it but I don't think with the current firmware version it is going to work. Seems like an update could fix this though. Right now Cue works to preview an already sampled location. What we need is;
1-Monitor EXT IN through CUE (not main outside)
2- Enable re-sampling to new pad through CUE in
3- Enable sample triggering through main outs while in this new "ReSample Cue" mode
Has some potential to be a great feature.
Hmmm this is probably gonna keep me awake tonight thinking on it 😂
Man, thank you for breaking all of this down!
Thanks Brother!
Cheers! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
Some people binge Netflix, I binge you lol
Hahaha cheers man! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
is there a way to route different external instruments to different fx bus? trying to get a turntable to come in clean and add effects to the a guitar
Hmmm not that I’m aware of, would be dope tho!
Thanks for this video, I learned a lot of thing, but I don't know why when I'm pushing enter in the efx settings, nothing happen :O someone have an idea ?
well I updated the SP404 to 2.0 version and it's working now :D
Wicked, good to know that v1.00 didn’t do that…interesting. Glad it worked out!
