I was always put off playing EDF. All because the Devs seemed to go way too hard to make the giant bugs (and spiders) look at realistic as possible. And then, I picked up EDF 4 and after a few hours. All I can say, Fuck Tunnels, man. Fuck them. If there are giant spiders down there. Just gas those fuckers. I ain't going down there. Even with a UFO overhead shooting disco death lasers! And launch alien frogmen down to the surface.
@@Qardo Yeah for the tunnels I just get a weapon wit hbig splash damage and unload down the tunnels. EDF 5 has more open spaces in the tunnels so not always viable but in 4.1 worked like a charm. Or use wing diver with phalanx, that has so much spread it can close tunnels and reloads insanely fast. I'm scared of spiders but the ones in edf actually never were that bad for me, while in other games I can deal with it but not nearly as well. I think because they made the spiders almost cute and because they just hop around instead of skittering about.
@Old Man Reacts fun fact, the EDF series is not an fps (first person shooter). it is a 3rd person shooter, accuracy matters less since the damage is flat across all body parts & the series is entirely player vs the environment. (friendly fire not withstanding, of course)
All the classes are fairly viable (not balanced) but Ranger is the easiest early. Wing Diver is also fairly easy while Air Raider is a bit trickier because most of his strong attacks reload on a point system so if you play alone you might just end up not being able to reload your weapons. In multiplayer that isn't an issue because your allies kills also give you points. Fencer is definitely the hardest to master because of his movement. If you can't get that right your constantly running behind your friends unless they wait for you. I'd go personaly with EDF 5 until 6 comes out in the west since it has a few nice additions like also being able to get weapons for other classes (allowing you to quicker go into harder missions wit hthose classes) as well as an upgrade system making duplicate weapons actually usefull instead of a complete waste of time.
Very big "IF" about slow fencers tho. If your air raider is smart, and fencer armory allows it, you can just strap the guy to the motorcycle as a mini-turret and watch him pulverize bugs until they're gravel. As long as piloting skills are up to par.
I remember when playing EDF1 back in PS2 (iirc), had to fight a godzilla and mecha godzilla... ON MY OWN?! I was like : "Hello! EDF?! Where's my backup? reinforcement?!" XD
This series is (Mostly) B-Movie: The game series. Infinite ammo, corny sci fi, giant insects, hammy acting, nonsense out the wazoo. On the off chance you want to try one, or recommend tryring one to a friend, there are 3 I'd recommend. 5, Iron Rain, and World Heroes. 5 is a reboot with quality of life improvements and class enhancements from 4.1, Iron Rain is a more subdued entry in its own timeline with less insanity and more experimentation (also letting any class have female characters and not excessively sexualized unless that's your cup of tea), and world heroes is a love letter to the series, baby's first EDF, the least nationalist, and the goofiest. No need to worry about me getting sick of hating the Xenos here, aside from 5 making some yikesy background chatter that sounds like they're using the bug monsters as an allegory for immigrants. Don't be fooled by the weapon number. Some of those are iterative, and others are flat out jokes or impractical in all but a handful of niches. Ranger's upgrades for 5 include being able to call in some vehicles. Basic stuff only though. Bikes, APCs, and Tanks. Which somehow not only includes the self propelled railgun, but the legally distinct mobile Maser Cannon. I disagree on the "Must use rocket" from what I've seen. Wing Divers.... one of the biggest turn offs to people who come for boom not horni. Air Raider's buff in 5 is that when anyone gets a kill, all Rangers and Air Raiders get credits. So if you're all air raider, you're not fighting over a communal pool of single instance kill credits. Also, some of the weapons got changed from kill credits to timers. Allowing for easier access to raining death at a more sustained rate. So you can get into fire support quicker. Just... not in cave missions. There's like one series of vehicles that can be spawned in caves, and none of your fire support requests work. So you're stuck with turrets, sticky bombs, special scatter guns, items that buff you and allies, and the subterranean capable spider bot. Air Raider is Support. It just so happens that the most popular kind of support is FIRE SUPPORT. I see they used a model of the Barbatos Gundam. I think you'd like it. Very mean and built for close quarters. Imagine a Wraith Knight's size, precision, and mobility fused with the feral brutality of a Death Company Dreadnought with its iconic pilot. Also, calling the Balam a Gundam because it's punching a giant lizard doesn't work, since Gundams are near universally used on humans or human creations. You want robots that fight kaiju? Gundam ain't that. It's about man versus man. Occasionally Man vs Machine. The giant robots in EDF are good at 1v1ing the kaiju, and that's it. Unless you're talking about the much smaller walkers of Iron Rain, which are for shooting. The dash canceling was replaced with an explicit dash mechanic in 5. And you can dash up or forward depending on which weapons you're rocking at the moment. Another QoL improvement in 5 is that you are able to progress the other 3 classes you're not playing, just slower. So if you want to switch, you don't have to start all over. Oh, but you will need to play max difficulty to get the VERY best weapons and armor levels. In most games. Not apparently in Iron Rain and I don't know about Heroes, especially since that one has very different mechanics about characters and classes.
Too bad this is not the original version for the removed version of this because the original take liberty had the animal girl that keeps appearing and pretty much that showed as the female EDF soldier was literally in a very accurate suit of an anime make girl suit but you know like a swimsuit kind of look with robotic future escape parts on her and throwing in actual game audio from when they got snared in a spider's Web
EDF 4.1 and 5 are both amazing games. Massive swarms of enemies with just as many guns to deal with them. The story is silly b-grade sci-fi, and that makes the games even better. When you question why humanity is that stupid and worth saving while at the same time firing plasma/shells as big as a 18wheel truck. That is when you know you are playing something fun. Avoid EDF Iron Rain. The newest one that sacrificed fun gameplay for pretty graphics.
I'd argue it's still fun horde busting and has overdue improvements like being able to loot after the fight and having female players characters have as much or as little dignity as the player wants.

EDF games are really fun even if you play them alone but they involve a lot of grinding and definitely more fun with other people.

Oh for sure, a hard grind. Least so in World Heroes, but grinding is otherwise a core element.

NPC allies was just first introduced in EDF 2017 or 3. EDF 2025 add WDs and Fencers. EDF 4.1 add Allied Vehicles. And so on.

Most EDF mechs are too slow, bulky, and (usually) lacking in firepower to be compared to Tau. So no worries for you.
