Life isn't fair and no one gets out of it alive. I got hurt on the job in 2010 and it effectively ended my career, and I remember every doctor I went to asked me if I was depressed. I wasn't depressed, but I was mad because more of all the red tape. In the end I was retired on disability, and my life changed, but it didn't end, it's another chapter in the book and I just learned I needed to do things differently and find other things to occupy my time and my mind. Had I decided to sit home and feel sorry for myself, who knows where I'd be. Instead, you just move on because life is going to keep going and the world isn't going to wait on you.
It was 20 years ago for me. I had a rare illness and no one could diagnose much less help me. I was confined to a bed for 8 years, at least I couldn’t get far from it. So I picked up model railroading, got seriously into it. Since then I’ve had an operation that has helped a lot, and I gave up the trains, but they maintained my sanity. Kept me from going crazy while confined to 12x14 room. I jokingly say I’d make a good astronaut, if I can pull 8 years in that room, I could take a space trip most anywhere! Still disabled, still can’t do much, but I still enjoy life.

I just woke up and started crying because of the situation I’m in right now which because of all the medical bills coming in I don’t know how I’m going to get out of. I think this might of been Gods way of saying stop feeling sorry for myself and figure a way out. With his help hopefully I will.
My start date is/was September 5 1979, a Mack truck ran a stop sign & killed both of my kids, Dixie was 4&1/2 Jim was 22 months. That changed my life, I had some down times, yes I did, got turned around June 1980 Heavenly Father really came through, oh he’s a nice guy, couldn’t live without him. I don’t thank him enough or often enough.

The first time I ever heard of Willie Nelson, was on an airplane. The person next to me said, "Did you know Willie Nelson is on this plane?" and she pointed to this old man, two rows forward on the opposite aisle seat from me, old guy with a ponytail. The woman next to me reaches into the magazine rack, pulls out a magazine, with Willie Nelson on the cover, same guy, shows it to me. My mouth fell open. So I started paying more attention to him. I'm guessing this isn't the way most people first learn about Willie Nelson.
He used to hook up with my sister when he was in town in the 1970's. I still find his hair once in awhile.
Many of us were subjected to endless Willie in the 70’s when our alcoholic mothers tortured us with his Red Headed Stranger record album played over and over again. And then we grew up and moved out… and bought our own Willie Nelson cassette tapes.
This reminds me of how I’d never heard of Art Monk. And then I was on a train to Washington and the person sitting next to me said to me “did you know Art Monk is on this plane?” And I said “this is a bus!” And she ignored me and pointed out this guy sitting 2 rows forward. Ever since then I followed Art Monk. Then there was the time I didn’t even know who Madeleine Albright was. Boy, I was on a bus, train AND plane, and each time this old lady was sitting next to me. She said “did you know Madeleine Albright is on this bus/train/plane?*” (delete as applicable), and I said “no! Who is she?” And she said “it’s me!” And I said “wow!” (On the bus), “you again???” On the train and “get the fuck outta here!” (Eddie Murphy style) on the plane. After which I began reading her books. Which just goes to show.
I got to meet Willie Nelson in 1995 he was funny, down to earth, and never once acted like talking to me was a waste of his time. It absolutely was. PURE CLASS.even in worn old blue jeans.
The cat is good, real good, he's humble and down to earth.

I do listen to Mr. Nelson and, in the natural course of learning about his life and his rich friendships and collaborations, and whom he admires and points to and says deserves a listen -- I've found myself listening to enough genres that I'd better not say whether I do or don't listen to anything in particular any more!

But not old school get-off-my-lawn bitter old man. At peace with himself and society. I’ve never seen or heard of an angry or hateful bone in his body.
It’s rare because not everybody has the chance to do it. What he was talking about, a lot of people are like that for a little while. Then something happens, then something else happens, then another thing on top of that, then next thing you know they just get trapped in something they never wanted or imagined. To really stick to your guns like that, not only involves luck, but being able to handle it over the long haul. Look at how many people were thinking that way at 19, and how many are still able to do it at 91. It’s almost like yeah, there’s that one guy right there in this video.
I know a few people who definitely stuck to their music and were not going to get trapped in any job but their lives were not anything you would want. Poverty, addiction, illegitimate children, jail, poor health and an early grave were all it amounted to for them. One had a lot of friends and another one wrote a few great songs, but that was about the best of it. To do what you want, the way you want, for as long as you want……… I mean that’s just hitting the jackpot of life.
Willie is a true survivor and has been through it all - a long and amazing iconic career... You gotta respect and love this guy. Keep strong Willie!

Willie used to sneak in a nightclub as a teen to hear my gandfather's Texas swing bands.....rockabilly stuff. It inspired him. Glad to see he still carries it. Grandpa would be proud of him.

If you can try and,watch it . just Beautiful .. at end Willie standing on Front of stage .. I think he even tossed his hat out to crowd .of course he,was getting a,Standing ovation .. I love Willie Nelson! I was drawn in by his country music, but he has proven to be so much more than just a singer/songwriter country music legend. He’s a role model, and he has given so much of himself for his fans.

He has written some of the best cowboy songs ever, he put the words together well, and as an amateur guitar player singer and song writer he is right it is not easy, but when your done or complete a song its rewarding a good feeling.

Met this man in '92 in Branson when I was 7 years old. He threw me a Texas Longhorns hat during the show and signed it after the show. Still have that hat, one of my most cherished possessions. Wish I would have been old enough to smoke with Willie as I'll never have the chance again. National Tresure he is!
