This is a great early game build. You can make it on day two if you spend a full day mining the cobblestone. Every mob loot collected can be sold for emeralds or used for crafting later in the game. Add an item sorter later to make your life easier. Storage can be expanded using another hopper under the chest going to another chest.

The roof can be glass. Glass does not allow spawning - so no torches necessary. It also lets you examine the farm for problems

You would need solid blocks for the roof to maintain 0 light level. If you use glass for the roof, then the farm won't work during the day.
