멕시코시티에서의 여정은 우리를 멕시코의 역사와 문화의 풍요로움에 더욱 깊이 빠져들게 했다.
이 곳은 아즈텍 문명의 중심지로서 그 역사적인 유물과 유적지로 가득 차 있다.
우리의 여행은 멕시코시티의 중심부에서 시작하여 고대 아즈텍 문명의 흔적을 찾아 1시간 거리에 위치한 테오티우아칸으로 향했다.
테오티우아칸은 멕시코시티에서 북동쪽으로 약 50km 떨어진 멕시코 계곡에 자리한 고대 메소아메리카의 도시이다.
기원전 200~250년 사이에 건설된 이 도시는 당시 세계에서 가장 큰 도시 중 하나였으며 아메리카 대륙에서 가장 영향력 있는 콜럼버스 이전 문명의 도시였을 것이다.
테오티우아칸의 고대 도시는 당시의 건축 양식과 신화 체계를 보여주며 그 위대함을 전 세계에 알리고 있다.
태양의 신전과 달의 신전, 죽은 자의 거리 등으로 이뤄진 테오티우아칸 유적은 현재 유네스코 세계 문화유산으로 지정되어 있어 많은 관광객들이 찾아온다.
이 도시는 대형 피라미드가 특징이며, 그 중 가장 큰 피라미드는 태양의 피라미드이다.
깃털 달린 뱀인 케찰코아틀을 숭배하고, 인간 심장을 제물로 바치는 등 메소아메리카 특유의 신화 체계가 이 문명에서 유래해 마야(4∼9세기), 톨테카(9∼12세기)로 이어졌다.
달의 피라미드와 깃털 달린 뱀의 신전이라는 두 개의 다른 주요 피라미드와 작은 사원, 광장 및 주거 단지가 함께 어우러져 있는 이 도시는 아즈텍 문명의 중심지로서 그 중요성을 고스란히 전하고 있다.
이곳 테오티우아칸의 피라밋은 확실히 이집트의 피라밋과 다른 모습이지만 닮은 모습이다. 그 규모로 보아선 비슷하게 보이지만 테오티우아칸의 피라밋이 더 웅장하게 보인다.
멕시코시티에서 테오티우아칸으로 가는 여행길에는 아즈텍 문명의 흔적들을 발견할 수 있는 휴게소가 있다.
그곳에서는 각종 조각들과 수공예품을 구경하며 여행의 휴식을 취할 수 있다.
또한 주변 마을의 전통 야외 음식점에서는 멕시코 음식과 전통 민속 공연을 즐길 수 있어 여행의 피로를 푸는 좋은 기회가 되었다.
테오티우아칸을 방문하면서 우리는 아즈텍 문명의 위대함과 세계 역사 속에서 그들의 중요성을 깨달았다.
그들의 거대한 유적은 우리에게 과거로의 시간 여행을 제공하며, 그들의 문명이 어떻게 발전하고 소멸했는지를 엿볼 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공했다.
이 여행은 우리에게 멕시코의 역사적 유산을 경험하고 그 깊은 뿌리를 탐구할 수 있는 소중한 기회였다.

Our journey from Mexico City immersed us even deeper into the richness of Mexican history and culture. This city stands as the epicenter of the Aztec civilization, adorned with historical artifacts and archaeological sites. Our travels took us from the heart of Mexico City to Teotihuacan, situated just an hour away in the northeast of the Mexico Valley.
Teotihuacan, an ancient Mesoamerican city located in the Mexico Valley about 50km northeast of Mexico City, was constructed between 200 and 250 AD, making it one of the largest cities of its time and likely one of the most influential pre-Columbian cities in the Americas. The ancient city of Teotihuacan showcases the architectural style and mythological beliefs of its era, proclaiming its grandeur to the world.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruins of Teotihuacan, featuring the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Moon, and the Avenue of the Dead, attract numerous tourists worldwide. This city, with its grand pyramids, small temples, plazas, and residential complexes, stands as a testament to the significance of the Aztec civilization.
Along the journey from Mexico City to Teotihuacan, travelers can explore roadside stops displaying traces of the Aztec civilization through various sculptures and handicrafts. These stops offer opportunities to relax and indulge in local cuisine and traditional folk performances in outdoor eateries in nearby villages, providing a refreshing break from travel fatigue.
Visiting Teotihuacan allows us to appreciate the greatness of the Aztec civilization and understand their significance in world history. The monumental ruins offer us a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the development and demise of their civilization. This journey provided us with a precious opportunity to experience and explore Mexico's historical heritage and delve into its deep roots.
