    Bought my first Porsche in June. 991.1 Manual. At my advanced age of 51 I no longer worry about being perfect. DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!!! Its a Porsche and that is what is made for. I commute 108 miles five to six days a week and LOVE driving this car. Resale value won't give me a ton of great experiences and memories!! Great channel!

    I know this vlog is few years old. But I never understood people that buy a 911 and turns it into a garage queen. All generations of 911s should be your daily commuter. It makes the commute so much enjoyable. If you can't drive it due to any reason, then yes you made the right choice in selling it to a person who will use it like it was meant to be. Btw, do appreciate your other vlogs as a subscriber.

    Thanks for the perspective. I just bought a 996 with 75k miles (and a good amount of overdue maintenance needed) for a little more than $13k. At that price point, I'm not afraid to drive it, wrench on it, or park it in crowded parking lots. I AM a little jealous of the guys around town in the newer 997s and 991s, but I've got no payments, and that makes my 'weekend toy' that much more pleasurable...

      I bought a 2.7 2008 Cayman and I love it. According to forums : the 2.7 is the more reliable Gen1 cayman. Not saying there is no risk, but definitely less risk as far as the cooling problem goes. I will not be tracking my car for this reason but will wait until I can afford a 981. But planning that to be about 5-10 years from now. My car has 80k miles, 10k of those I have put on with no issues! The flat six howl is amazing with my soul cat back exhaust. The 5 speed is great and has that rifle bolt feel, handles like a dream.. Recently took a buddy 90mph around a sweeper and he was hooked. Now he wants one! No tire squeal whatsoever.. Not sure where the limit is on this mid engine'd masterpiece. Did I mention I only paid 22k for this example? From the Porsche dealership in Atl! And a 3 year warranty on a 10 year old car, damn I love my Porsche 😍

      Obi-Wan Kenobi hi, thanks for your post. I too am looking at a 2006 to 2008 Cayman, but worried about IMS. Did that enter into your decision at all? Have if me thinks that it is overblown but the other half thinks that my luck blows and if the IMS is gonna go, it will go during my ownership of the car.

    Agreed. My two last "fun" cars kept me constantly worrying about where to park. It's funny how every time I start car shopping again, I always forget that part of ownership.

    I totally agree with you on this, I bought a 996 a year ago and drive it hard all the time. I do still worry about things happening to it not because of its value but because I love the car so much but because it's cheaper I don't worry about putting miles on the clock and affecting the value as it wasn't worth much to start with.

    Between living in a place with harsh winters and having young kids, having any sports car as an only car was never really an option for me. Over the last 20 years of owning sports cars as second or third cars, my biggest regret with each of them is putting too little mileage on them due to concerns about keeping them "perfect". Unfortunately, I've always ended up keeping them perfect for the next owner! My reason for not driving them has never been operating costs - once you remove the depreciation, Porsches are generally pretty reasonable for ongoing costs. Unless something unusual goes wrong (which always can happen with any car,) the biggest expense is the bi-annual tire replacement. For me it's more the "keeping it clean", avoiding parking lots, or having to pick up the kids after work.
    With my 2009 Carrera S, I'm trying hard not too worry about that, and to just drive it and enjoy it (at least between April and November). The small rear seats allow me to use it even when picking up the kids, and the frustration from the wear & tear they put on the interior is offset by the smiles on their faces as they tell me to "go faster", and when my 6 year old tells me that this will be his car when he starts driving.
    I hope you keep your car. Where are you looking at moving to that you won't keep the 911?

      speedcanada1 I swear you wrote this for me. I have a brand new Mustang GT with the performance pack sitting in my garage as a fourth car. It won't come out until spring. I'm going to try and keep it so all the miles are mine regardless but you just never know if you'll have to sell it. I really want your car. An ideal garage would have my Mustang and a 997.2 911 right above it on a lift. I really think those 2009-2012 years are going to start appreciating here soon. Those years are so ideal compared to the IMS 996/997.1 and the newer larger 991. Not that the 991 isn't valued, it's just larger and and on a massive depreciation curve due to popping them out like crazy. Those 997.2 cars are unique.

    • @speedcanada1
      @speedcanada1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, my friend. Personally, I found that the 997.2 was the sweet spot in terms of modernity, materials and build quality, and performance. Although the 991 is a beautiful, capable car, the increase in size just decreased the appeal to me as a sports car (although it may make a better commuter car!).
      I love the new Mustang GTs... I had a convertible as s rental last spring and couldn't get enough of the Coyote engine sound. I drove around in circles downtown just to hear that exhaust! I can definitely see getting one of those used as they head down depreciation street...

    • @MrAchilles113

      997.2 suffer from bore scoring. There are no perfectly reliable cars, let alone 911's. Owning a high performance machine is always a maintanance gamble. Sometimes you luck out, other times you're scraping the savings account.

    • @713vinh
      @713vinh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrAchilles113 it's uncommon to have bore scoring on the 997.2, more common on the 996 & 997.1.

    Like your perspective. I was recently having an internal battle over whenever to get an R8, or a 997 Cayman S.
    I could fit either in my budget, but I decided to be super logical, and do several test drives.
    Long story short... I got the Cayman, and I couldn't be happier. As fun as anything I've driven, and it has beautiful lines.
    long story short. I have fun driving my car everyday, and have extra cash flow, for whatever.
    I'm with you. Think these things out people.

    I just bought a 1999 996 with 76K on it. It has the Tiptronic transmission, it's in beautiful shape and I paid $16,500. I am so happy with it!! Its my first Porsche but the best part is I don't have to worry about it like more expensive cars I've had. I can drive it in the rain, snow, its an everyday driver. It is a blast to drive has very nice power, its small, comfortable and you are literally wrapped in a beautiful leather interior. People are almost giving these cars away for the price of a used honda civic. The fun to price ratio on these is way up there and you can afford it.

  • @apolloandratti7922
    @apolloandratti7922 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    thanks for the honest reflection. The more seat time I get in a wide range of cars, the more I find myself appreciating the experience of less expensive cars--Honda s2000, Miata, sub-30k Porsches, etc. As you mentioned, it is somewhat liberating not feeling one has no much money riding on a car, to the point where it is taking away from the ownership experience--e.g., worried about milesage, parking, spirited HPDEs, etc. I am reconsidering my search for a 997.2 and am looking at 996s and Caymans instead. Do you think it's worth paying the premium for a 2009 Cayman to avoid the IMS issue?

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The IMS really isn't a big issue on a 2006 and up Cayman. Porsche switched out the IMS bearing with a more reliable one in 2006 I believe. You'd really just be paying for the updated exterior/interior, more refined suspension, and a little more power. You have to ask yourself if that's worth $10k to you. You'll likely pay around $25k for an average mileage 987.1 S vs. $35k for a 987.2 S.

    • @apolloandratti7922
      @apolloandratti7922 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Car Fanatic thanks. That's quite a price difference, and 997.1 territory. Putting the IMS aside, I would say it's not worth the premium.

    • @PaulEubanks
      @PaulEubanks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bore scoring and oil starvation is the bigger issue with the older Caymans. People theorize it's due to heat on one bank of cylinders, and can be prevented by using a GT3 radiator, but I'm not sure that's been definitively proven yet. The M96-7 engines just weren't a good design IMO, and it's probably worth the premium for the 9A1 engine in the 2009+ models which corrected these silly issues. Plus you get the option of having a PDK in '09+.

    • @apolloandratti7922
      @apolloandratti7922 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Eubanks good points. Besides reliability maybe the 2009+ will hold their value, will also be a better car to hold it for a long time. What are they thoughts between the S and non-S 2009?

    • @PaulEubanks
      @PaulEubanks 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      S and Base are both good, just one is faster/torque-ier than the other. Many people think the base is anemic by comparison, but really it's just because the S is such a monster of a car.

    CF, I agree with your advice to keep that car payment down as much as possible or avoid if possible. I just purchased my very first Porsche two months ago. I almost got into a Boxster, a friend talked me out and I got my 2009 Carrera S Cab with 26k miles on it. I now have 62k and it is flawless..... I drive it daily, use the cab 2-3 times a day, and will never get anything else. I got off the lot for a 77k note. That included Platinum Insurance bumper to bumper and that was 3.5k (Yes, you need to get some insurance for any major default).
    I've owned a 328, 335I, M3, X5 loaded, (2) GTI's (those were fun), and now my sled. Every mile is a smile. And the fasted I have taken my rig is 171 8 West get off at Old Highway 80. Top end is 183, but I don't want to risk being tasered, beaten, and cuffed and stuffed with a reckless driving mark on my record. I keep it light.
    My thoughts: Don't get a Cayman, get a full blown badboy, find the credit/money and enjoy everyday of your life. If you test drive, you will be freaked out. Don't go with your woman, she will do and say what she can to make sure you either get the sled or get her a ring.... go test drive by yourself and hopefully you have a guy like my experience who let me use Sport Plus.

      I missed my older Boxster so much that I almost bought a 2009 C2S Cabrio (No Chrono) as it was an apparent bargain with 12K miles on the clock for $54K at a premier lemon-lot. With the warranty and tax...I was looking at $60K+ out the door. Silver and looked great. However, I think I'd still prefer a Cayman or Boxster for far less money and better weight balance. Does your C2S handle as well as a Cayman??

    Had an 06 987S. Great car, but my GTS is another level of fun and functionality. The extra 100HP adds a lot of fun. The back seat/storage area are functional for golf clubs and I can finally recline where I want to be. I am growing old with the 997.2 so I could car less about mileage. A little extra walk in a parking lot was done previously so no change there. Ya, if you can’t afford a 997 a 987 s is a great fun compromise, but it IS a compromise from a 911. No remorse for me.

    Really enjoying your V-logs! I am in the hunt for 996 here in Japan. In Japan, most people uses trains to work and therefore lots of used cars here are with a very low milage and a good condition. I am debating the choice between manual or tiptronic transmission for 996. Can you give me your thoughts on that?

    • @CarFanatic

      Manual all the way! It's more engaging and has better performance. It's also a simpler transmission, thus easier to fix if something goes wrong. Good luck and keep me posted!

      Thanks for you your quick response and advice. I will go for manual. One more question. i know you have driven both 996 and 997. Obviously 997 is more modern with updated technologies and a faster car but in terms of the driving experience (engine sound, tightens of the car, handling, etc), do you think 996 is just as fun to drive or do you recommend 997? I am asking your opinion on this because price diff between 996 and 997 is significant in Japan as well and if 996 is just as fun to drive as 997, I would rather go for 996 and spend extra to upgrade the car with after market some option.

    I think that there may be a feeling of complacency among young people that those of us with more miles don't usually share. Things may not always be as good as they are now in our Country and it's prudent to prepare for an uncertain future just in case. One of the most important aspects of that is to be aware of the time-value of money.

    I bought my first generation 997 (with upgraded IMS and RMS replaced) back in 2018 for 31K cash. 68k miles. So far I have added 3900 miles no major issues or major expense other than registering the car Modern Key Fob replacement, insurance (997 takes about 70% of my insurance bill), gas and so on and I am in for a running total of 36.5k in just over two years. Currently at $186.56 per ride, $9.23 per mile.
    Not sure how some measure the cost of ownership but I track everything for this car on a spreadsheet and if I eventually sell it I guess my cost of ownership will be my running total minus my sell price. Not sure if I am tracking this information correctly but that is how I am doing it. I've seen a couple of youtubers leave out insurance/gas in many cases so I could never get a true gauge of what it cost to own these cars.
    I plan to do a full suspension refresh soon as well as the starter motor/battery cable (hot start symptoms) so that will add a couple of thousand dollars to the above number. Anyway, New tires soon after and buying some Fuchs if I can find them.

    Early non-Mezger liquid cooled Boxsters, 996 and 997 might have issues, in a relatively low percentage of units, related to IMS bearing and cylinder lining cracking. I wouldn't accept any non-Mezger engine powered 996 or 997 in exchange of my 964.

  • @K1dPhresh1
    @K1dPhresh1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hitting the nail on the head. I do want a 997.2, but 997.1 prices are much more in my reach right now. I just can't stand the stereo/infotainment system and I'm scared of IMS. I probably should get a nice 997.1, aftermarket head unit and either make sure the IMS has been addressed or calculate that into my price. My automotive fanaticism is slowly fading from what it used to be. Who knows where I'll be when it's time to pull the trigger.
    Either way, good points. Buy a nice used example if something in your price range and enjoy it. Not worth going into debt/financial hardship over. Live within your means.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! If you go for a 997.1 with plans to upgrade the IMS bearing and head unit, make sure you can get the car for significantly less than a comparable 997.2. A new IMS and head unit will run you close to $4k. If the price different between comparable 997.1s and 997.2s isn't much more, go with the 997.2 because you'll get refreshed exterior along with a bunch more power. Alternatively, you may be able to find a 997.2 base Carrera for the price of a 997.1 S with new head unit & IMS bearing. The base 997.2 has nearly as much power, better torque curve, and engine seems to be issue free.

      Car Fanatic absolutely! I did a little comparison "shopping" after your video not taking into account options. I just looked at MY (.1 vs .2), mileage, and price. There are some deals to be had, but in a lot of cases the price difference wasn't enough to warrant passing on the updated .2, so st the current time it would have to be the right deal. I did find a sweet Atlas Gray (I believe that's the color, same as your basically) C4S with two tone red/black interior with low miles for a very nice price. From initial checks it seems to be the perfect deal. Again, I didn't look at options or maintenance history. So the potential is there.
      Edit: here it is - www.cargurus.com/Cars/share/163056904
      Meteor Gray, not Atlas.

      A side note...spending countless hours on the forums, there has developed a consensus in the Porsche forums that the IMS bearing seldom brake in cars that are driven hard, tracked etc. Porsches like to be driven hot every time they are taken out. So if you have the original bearing in your car, there is even more reason to dive it like you stole it.

      C63 sounds sweet. One thing I've really come to appreciate about Porsches is the balance. The cars aren't insanely powered, but nicely balance all around performance and driving experience. I think we'll see Caymans and 997s drop a little bit more in price, but they'll bottom out soon. Even a base 997.1 is so much car for the money. I'd have a hard time believing one with average miles in good shape would sell for less than $25k.

      vdubjetta02, I fully agree with your comment. Sometimes it can be a real relief to own something that's fully depreciated and you can enjoy without the worries. Once the IMS/RMS repair is done on the 996/986, you've got an incredibly reliable, somewhat modern, very high-performance automobile. The 996 at under $20K, the 986 under $10K and the NA/NB Miata ~$5K are the sports car bargains of our time.

    I'm surprised. Why a Cayman over a 996 911? They're both roughly the same cost and you could probably get more functionality from the +2 seats of the 911.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I prefer the Cayman to the 996 for a few reasons:
      1) Porsche really improved their build quality when they moved from the 996/986 to the 997/987.
      2) Aesthetics - Cayman has the better interior/exterior in my opinion.
      3) Mid-engine balance - I love the rear engine bias of the 911, but a mid-engine car would be better for canyon carving.

    This is some pretty good advice. I own a Honda S2000, WRX STi and a Gen 5 Viper GTS. The Viper is a $100K+ car, and the amount of stress associated with its ownership is commensurate with its price tag. I park it a mile away from any mall entrance and still stress when I'm inside.............. But, the enjoyment of driving the car and owning the car outweighs the stress. I guess the bottom line is, it's nice to have a couple other cars to hop into and drive without the worry.............

      As a porsche owner, there are other great sports cars out there. Some that I would argue are more special. The 911 just happens to be a better overall car than all others except say a corvette. I bought a 997.2 at around the same time you did and my thoughts are fairly similar - although I love the car, if I had to do it all over again I'm not certain I would have, mainly due to the fact that I don't drive it that much. My other vehicle is a 4th gen Toyota 4Runner which I drive far more often, primarily due to two reasons: 1) My office is located only a couple miles from home so if I take the 997, the engine doesn't even come close to warming up all the way, and 2) I ride a mountain bike regularly and it's just a lot easier to throw the bike into the SUV rather than mount the bike rack on the 997. Funny thing is I actually owned an AP1 S2000 several years ago - that was a great car but I outgrew it. I needed torque. :)

    A lot of good sense in this video. There's a huge industry of manufacturers, magazines, youtubers etc who are here to tell us we need the latest. I'm not sure how much slightly newer and slightly more powerful (which usually can't be used on the street) means in terms of fun. I drive a 14 year old S2000 every day when the weather is above 40 degrees. I don't blink once about taking a 2000 mile road trip. Consumables are cheap. I don't wash it that often. What's a detail? Money aside, I'm not sure there's anything under $100k I'd trade for the car 'cause its that good. I'm not here to start a Honda vs Porshe war because I'd be plenty happy in Boxster too.

      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Romulus Deadphone I wouldn't, however, at $30k you're looking at a 05-06 base Carrera with higher miles. Nothing wrong with that, but the 997.2 is a significant upgrade. But with that said, those 997.1s are still fun to drive. Just make sure a car that cheap was properly maintained and didn't have any issues. If so, you're better off spending a little more to get something in better condition

    Just to give another support for the Cayman...
    (All $ figures below are Canadian dollars)
    I bought a first gen Cayman S for ~$32000 (including tax and registration) two years ago. Had only about 30k miles on it.
    I drove about 12k miles since then. It is my only car but I only drive it for pleasure.
    I spent about $5000 on maintenance, minor repairs, new summer tires, and used winter tires / rims.
    In the used market right now, people have posted ~$33000 on average for a car like mine. Let's say I apply 10% discount and can sell it for $30000.
    So not including the insurance, gas, track fees, etc. - it cost me $3500 a year to own this car
    And I have a lot of fun every time I get on this car. When I go on smaller tracks, I can compete with 911 Turbos!!
    So yes! You can afford a high performance sports car with a reasonable budget! Of course, this is barring major failures, but I'd say that could happen to any performance cars.

    I think this is a very good piece. Balanced. I know all too well what he is talking about as far as a car too nice or too expensive to do anything really fun with it. Like drive it a lot. Or drive it to any and all places. If it sits in the garage because you don't want to take it to the mall, is that really worth all that money? To some, maybe yes. But when I recently had close to $3k maintenance costs on a car that I drove 900 miles last year, I start to wonder if it's all worth it. Add another grand for insurance and such. I couldn't bear to part with it, but sometimes I wonder if an old 944 that I drive everyday everywhere, with abandon, would ultimately be more fun.

    Great commentary, but if you can afford $50-60K, is a lower mileage 997.2 S a good option vs. other new/used cars out there at that price point? It seems like a car one could own for a decade without regret.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I had to spend $50-60k again, I'd definitely get a low mileage 997.2 over other new/used cards. What new cars in that price range can stack up against a 997? Sure, there will be faster cars, but none that are as well balanced and timeless as the 997. The real dilemma would then be a) Do you spend the extra dough to get a 997 GTS or b) Do you wait for the 991 S to drop in price?

    • @TheSnoopy1750
      @TheSnoopy1750 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it depends on the reliability of the 997 vs. 991 (997.2 seems pretty bulletproof). I personally like the 997.2 coupe style (as you said, timeless) and feel the 991 is too big but the 991.2 is unbelievably fast (0-60 in 3.4) so it's a tough choice but it will be a a few years until even the 991.1 S is close to $60K. Today, I would go with a lower mileage loaded 997S.

      JosephM1750 sorry to jump into your conversation but I would go with the 997. Sure the 991 is newer, faster, updated but I prefer the look of the 997 over the 991. Now I haven't driven either, but I'd imagine it is the same with all cars nowadays. The newer the model the less of a connected driving experience (i.e. hydraulic vs electric steering, exhaust sounds, etc). Besides in 15-20 years water cooled Porsches will be the new air cooled with Porsche developing hybrid and electric cars now, LOL.

    I will be 16 this year and I want to save up for a Porsche 911. what year do you think would be the best?

    • @TheSquiddlyspooge
      @TheSquiddlyspooge 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Fann 2009-2012 997.2. The 1999-2008 years were the first water-cooled engines and suffered massive IMS issues in the M96 and M97 engines. Google IMS failure and you'll understand. The previous air cooled engines are a lot more valued. The current 991 of the 911 is larger and a slight departure from the classic 911s. They're still depreciating like crazy but are considered excellent cars and will eventually level off. The nice thing about the 2009-2012 years is they are smaller being more true to the 911 experience. They have the current gen 9A1 engine which is excellent. They also have PDK and hydraulic steering. They are about to level off and start appreciating due to the long run and glut of quality 911s from all the crap 996's out there no one will buy. There is an exception though, any year Turbo is good. They have a different "Mezger" engine which is valued highly due to its racing pedigree. The 996 turbo is probably the best deal out there right now. That or just buy a new S550 mustang. I looked up Edmunds track review out of curiosity and a modern Mustang achieved something like 68 mph in the slalom over a 2003 911 turbo at like 62 mph. You really can't compare them though.

    • @vdubjetta02
      @vdubjetta02 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheSquiddlyspooge IMS is not massive, it's less than 5% of actual vehicles...... And the IMS tapered off even more after 2005. There are many many 996 owners with 120,000 + miles on stock IMS/rms...

    • @TheSquiddlyspooge
      @TheSquiddlyspooge 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      vdubjetta02 I think it's more like 10%. Regardless it has caused values to plummet. The engine is no where near as stout as the 9A1. If you do happen to experience an IMS issue you might as well write the car off as a loss since it'll be prohibitively expensive to fix given the value of the car. Of course you could do preventative maintenance by upgrading to an aftermarket bearing but to do that in an M97 engine means pulling the entire engine apart. Just isn't worth it. They're crappy years for the 911 and there's no way around it. He asked for the best and without saying GT3 I decided a 997.2 was ideal.

      Alex Fann There are two turbos for $33,900 (2001 & 2002) on Autotrader right now. I also found 09 Carrera's' starting at $34k with lower mile options in the $40s

    You spent the $$$$. Why baby the car? Who are you saving it for? Keep it pristine for someone else to enjoy when you're dead??? Granted, I'm always anal about my cars when I fist buy them, but after 2 years or so, screw it! I USE them and make sure to maintain them. I babied my 2015 WRX till I got my first parking lot door ding and a few highway rock chips. After that, the futility set in. Cars for the most part are horrible investments anyhow.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ALT3REDB3AST I hear you. I am not treating the car as an investment or saving it for someone else. When I grew up, I noticed that once I stopped caring about something, it would turn into garbage. Great example are shoes. Shoes will inevitably get worn to the point you have to throw them out. However, I do feel a car is more durable and, by taking care of it continuously, will greatly extend the life of the car.

    Unfortunately my expected Porsche 997.1 fell through and I have to find another option. What are your thoughts on the BMW Z4?
    I live in Germany and cars are around 20% to 30% more here, so a decent 2012-2013 Z4 would run me around 30-35k €. However, this would be a bit over my budget and I really should look for cars around 25k, but hey your almost dream car for only 5k more. It's the same inner argument which I'm sure you had as well. Get the 997.2 for 60k or the 997.1 for 40k. Well f the 10k I'm getting my dream car :P
    Nice year of 2016, keep up the good content. Really enjoying your channel, even with the cayenne ;)

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +iokone my advice would be to wait for another 997.1 or save up for the 997.2. my cousin bought a 2014 Z4 and sold it shortly after because of its electrical issues. I'm my opinion, you shouldn't settle for a BMW if what you really want us a Porsche. Just wait however long you need to because you'll want to keep the Porsche for a long time whereas that may not be the case for other cars.

      Makes a lot of sense! I love my 911, but if I could do it all over again, I'd probably get a cheap Cayman. I think that's one of the best cars for the money at the moment.

  • @Aardvark49

    This is a good channel with good tips. CF is very smart in that he saved up and paid cash for his 997. At 68 I'm prolly older than most here, but still a car enthusiast. Just sold my E39 M5 after three years' ownership, now hunting 997.2 Carrera or 981 Cayman S. I've owned 30 cars in my lifetime, and have blown a lot of money on them. For the overwhelming majority, cars are not investments; they're expensive toasters, hunks of metal with a motor (ah, but what a motor...). I echo CF's advice: Pay cash and DIY as much work as you can. That way you own the car, not the other way around.

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Vic Sorlie thanks for the kind words! You are right that you should pay cash for a car if you can. Unfortunately, I didn't purchase my 997 outright. However, when it came time to purchase my Cayenne, I bought it with cash. Now, I just have a little left on my 997 before it is completely paid off. Thanks for watching!

    • @CarFanatic

      I have to say that is a fantastic deal. Great job with that!

    • @CarFanatic
      @CarFanatic  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cayman R's are very nice. I think they will hold their value much better than a standard Cayman S, however, I don't think they'll appreciate like a Cayman GT4. The Cayman GT4 derives its value mainly from the 3.8L 911 motor followed by the GT3 suspension bits and larger brakes. On the other hand, the Cayman R is really a factory tuned S. If you can find one for a good price, I think it would be an excellent car to own...especially if you can find one with full leather interior and carbon bucket seats.

    Your dead on. 10, 20, 30 grand MORE does not return MORE driving enjoyment most of the time. I have had and tracked 997's, 987's, 3.2's and a high mileage 986s was the smiles per $ winner of any of them. There are a lot of people buying porsches for prestige - they need the new toy - enthusiasts want the fun experience.
