  • Today on the #vfx livestream I'm recreating a photo in #3d using #cinema4d. The trick is to use displacement maps and noise to create the night-city effect in order to save polygons and vram.

I'm too late to this party, but here is an AE tip.
Create an adjustment layer above the mosaic adj layer.
Add FIND EDGES and then set the later to multiply.
That will add a small black edge to each of the squares and separates them when you use the image as a disp map.

A simple way to add variation to noise is to add the sine of an arbitrary angle to the noise values, this angle can be defined by the planes coordinates with a hash21 function

Looking good! Makes me think of L.A. skyline at night - an the show Bosch as he lives on a penthouse on stilts in beverly hills in the show..
i think one detail though at 2:47:54 there should be a black corridor under powerlines.. usually people wouldnt like to live beneath humongus powerlines, that doesn't compare with those small houses in size. When you compare it with the size of the lamps the powerlines look huge so perhaps something could be done to the scale and the perspective (even smaller powerline towers in the distance)..

Wow dude you mentioned the feeling of tiny in huge space and the reverse of that, that was exactly my thought of that image before you mentioned it. That feeling is soooo vividly weird, I always got it when I was feeling a bit sick and was drifting in and out of sleep. It always had a very geometric trace to it, like I could feel the 'structure' of the space and objects itself. Man being human is weird.

you need to use a bake texture node after the color correction if plugging into a displacement node. you can use the bake texture node to mix between two different material displacements for mix materials.

  • @sanjacobs6261

11:44 I don't think you should be using a mid level of 0.5 here. It'll be fine as long as you're only using one texture with one height setting, but when you start cranking the height of some of the other planes later on, you'll end up creating massive dips down in the planes that have high buildings, making what is essentially massive square holes in the ground.

I feel like the transmission towers kinda break the mood by not shrinking fast enough into the distance. The first pair is very close, but the second one seems to be sitting on top of the city and the scale doesn't make much sense to me. Anyways a great stream ❤! Shame I couldn't watch it live.

its been 2 hours and I'm only 15 minutes into this video... guess this is what I get for using blender. Although I'm getting results, the hardest part about this so-far is blender's lack of use of displacement maps with limited vertices. In order for displacements, it requires a subdivision surface modifier so yay...
