Is Walking GOOD or BAD For Buttock Pain?

  • People with a literal pain in the butt (buttock/glute pain), Piriformis Syndrome, or even sciatica (sciatic nerve pain down the leg) often ask: Is walking a good or bad idea? Is it safe or okay to walk when dealing with these issues? The answer is simple- but you may need to do a little testing. Here's how!
So, the short and general answer is that as long as it’s not painful (or there’s very little pain while walking)- then walking is fine!
But, if walking causes pain in your back, butt, or leg to increase (more pain the longer you walk or pain that is moderate to severe while walking) then I DO NOT recommend walking and pushing through pain.
Here's the good news though... that doesn’t mean you can’t find CREATIVE, outside-the-box ways to walk with less pain. And better yet, you can use walking as an opportunity for a learning experience. Just takes a little self-testing.
If walking forward is yucky, then try walking backwards, try walking sideways right, then side-stepping left. Try walking uphill (incline) or downhill (decline). There are many possibilities.
What’s cool about moving your body different ways and changing directions when you walk is that it gives you clues. Clues as to what your body likes and doesn’t like. And from there, we can begin testing to find what motion will eventually make you better (the motion you can use as medicine).
Once we find the motion that improves how you move and walk- then we can bottle it up and optimize the movement prescription (dose, frequency, and timing).
So, instead of stopping walking completely, think outside-the-box and find creative ways to keep yourself moving in an enjoyable, safe way.

Walking backwards has been really great for my butt and leg symptoms, especially if its increasing and starting to go down the calf. Walking backwards has been able to reverse that. I even walk backwards at home back and forth in the evenings for example.

Mine has changed over the six months I have been dealing with sciatica and herniated disc. Now when I go walk the grocery store aisles or I'm out any longer than 45 minutes I get the nagging pain in my buttock and hip area

New to your channel but have had a pain in my 🫏🫏🫏 for over 2.5 years. I retired from a desk job & I started to get pain soon after retiring. I thought it was an ovary and it radiated to my butt cheek. I walk 1 to 1.5 hrs a day but some days towards the end my pain gets bad. Thanks for the info as I won’t give up & will try your suggestions.

Walking QUICKLY up our local sledding hill and back down VERY SLOWLY (fighting gravity whole way down) is the only thing beside time that has helped my sciatica pain.

Ditto, distance plus time equals healing. At least at first. At first walking was the only thing that helped, but then I found strength training. Time has definitely helped me, I'm mostly just a little painful in the AM, then ok through the day. Just putting on socks used to be screaming pain, but now I noticed its more 'habitual pain'. I tried distracting myself and noticed that it didn't hurt much at all, I'd just spent three and a half months in pain so was expecting it.
But I used to walk for hours before I found strength training. Walking was painful at first, but I really had to keep going and eventually it flattened out, then went away. But when IN pain, it was only wall squats and the warrior pose that instantly got rid of the pain, somethign I think I avoided doing because I couldn't believe just doing one thing could simply STOP all that pain, but whadday know. I only see these updates every once in awhile bcause I've 'moved on', but thats really out of hte box thinking to walk backwards or move sideways. Certainly if its not BROKEN, then I can't see doing anything but moving to help.

    Q. Is cycling good or bad for buttock pain, I am wondering whether clipless pedals (i.e. feet attached to the pedals) and endless walking the dog are a root-cause of my piriformis syndrome resulting from too much leg movement in a single direction … really like your videos Charlie … from a UK-based pain in the derriere who is working hard to get rid of it for good, somedays no pain others youch … especially in the left cheek. Keep up the great work.

    • @drcharliejohnson
      @drcharliejohnson  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Hey Paul! If not painful- no issue with cycling per say. But sounds like some more detective work is needed to figure out issue. Good news is that if you have days with no pain- then it’s just a matter of solving the puzzle and you should be able to become painfree everyday.

For me cycling has been less likely to increase my symptoms than walking. Although if I’m having symptoms and really push through up the hills it has become worse. So in those cases I have tried to use very easy gears uphill and simply gone slower but pain free.

Thank you very much for this info, my lower back/ hip pain returned recently after not having any problems since April /May last year (2022) I hope it has now peaked and that it’s on the mend again, so until it has healed somewhat, I have learned that its
better to ease into stretching and exercise and build up gradually so as not to aggravate things.
What you have just said makes perfect sense and has reinforced my thoughts on how to progress.
Thank once again for your help and advice.

How about wall Pilates? I've been dealing with very aggressive pain since Thanksgiving do to 2 bulge disc in my lower back that is impinging on my sciatic nerve. In the last two days the pain has gotten much better and I've been writing my stationary bike which has not caused me any pain.
Last night I came across videos that are instructional videos for wall Pilates... Targeting the butt abs and back of the thighs. Do you think this would be safe to start??

I’m beginning to see that only movement helps but done correctly and little at a time... and I do believe eating anti inflammatory diet helps too. The pain dr I see these days doesn’t believe in PT but he’s overweight soooooooo.......🤨

Hi Charlie from Australia have recently come across your channel & have viewed some of them. I will implement them into my daily life. Have had 3 back fusions the last leaving me with Sciatica symptoms butt & groin pains, burning pain down left hip, thigh, outer shin & burning symptoms in the soles in both feet, I am tacking Amiodarone for heart issues, I noted that burning of tingling in feet & hands can be a side effects of this medication, have tried cutting the dose down but heart issues start to come back. On pain meds too, Endone Oxy. Day one today on doing some of your ideas, be in touch to let you know how I get on. Thank you.

My new set up for bed is soft foam over a thermarest mattress with moderate pressure and several dense foam camping pads underneath. Soft, medium, firm, with spring in the thermarest air mattress. Eating more vegetables, especially apples, as well because keeping 'regular' is key to avoiding lower back pain I have found. Sciatica pain went from terrible to GONE with no other changes. Pretty sure I had a heliobacter pylori infection as well (bloating and rosacea) that is responding well to internal and external (on rosacea) use of oregon grape root. Look at your diet and bed first is my best advice.

@@drcharliejohnson The only other thing I would add is that it is also important to keep your living space warm and dry. Make sure there is no mold hiding behind shelves or ceilings, or whatever. Cold and damp is definitely an invitation for the pain to start up. I found that I was developing gout because of toe fungus but scrubbing daily with a brush has gotten rid of it. Normal washing is not enough to eliminate athlete's foot.
